Start a Path of Exile 2 Mercenary campaign with a grenade-focused route, but keep your skills, supports, passive tree, and Ascendancy aligned to one patch-matched guide.

For a practical early-game Mercenary route, start with a crossbow grenade build and follow a guide that matches your game patch. Grenade leveling guides are listed for Path of Exile 2 versions 0.5.4 and 0.5.5, while an older campaign guide offers useful act-by-act structure but should not be treated as a current skill or passive-tree reference.

Which early Mercenary build should you follow?

This guide focuses on grenade-based campaign leveling. It is a documented Mercenary approach, not a claim that grenades are the strongest build. The available guide listings do not provide verified damage, campaign-time, cost, or win-rate comparisons.

For a current starting point, look for a grenade guide explicitly labeled for your game version: listings include a Gemling Legionnaire grenade starter for 0.5.4 and a Mercenary grenade leveling guide for 0.5.5. Their listing details establish that these guides exist, but not the exact gem links, level thresholds, passive allocations, or gear choices inside them. Check the linked guide itself before following those specifics: 0.5.4 Gemling Legionnaire grenade starter listing and 0.5.5 Mercenary grenade leveling listing.

ZiggyD Gaming’s campaign guide is a more detailed progression reference, covering acts, skills, support gems, passive tree, gearing, and Witchhunter or Gemling Legionnaire options. Published on December 15, 2024, it predates the 0.5.x listings, so use it for broad progression structure rather than copying its exact build details into a later patch: ZiggyD Gaming’s Mercenary campaign guide.

How should you approach the campaign route?

Choose one patch-matched guide and stay with it

Use a single guide’s skill setup, support-gem choices, passive tree, equipment priorities, and Ascendancy plan together. These elements are connected; mixing an older tree or skill link with a newer guide can produce a setup that its source never recommends. If the guide’s patch label does not match your game, treat its specific allocations as unverified.

Use older campaign coverage for structure, not exact allocations

The older ZiggyD guide’s act-by-act format can help orient a new or returning player to progression. Its date matters: its content does not establish that the same skill links, passive nodes, or gearing advice remain current in 0.5.x.

Grenades are not the only documented option

Explosive Shot is another listed Mercenary starter direction, built around crossbow attacks and a linked campaign route. The available listing does not independently validate its detailed setup or quantify how it compares with grenades. Keep the alternatives distinct rather than combining their skills, support gems, Ascendancy choices, or passive trees: Explosive Shot starter listing.

When deciding between a grenade guide and an Explosive Shot guide, compare what each source actually specifies for campaign clear, boss damage, execution and reload rhythm, gear dependence, and Ascendancy or passive-tree commitment. The available listings do not establish a winner on those measures.

What crossbow changes matter?

Grinding Gear Games’ official 0.3.0 notes state: “Reloading a crossbow and switching crossbow ammunition no longer reduces the player’s movement speed.” The same update also changed accuracy gained per level and from Dexterity. These are historical 0.3.0 notes, not a statement of current 0.5.5 numerical values or a substitute for a patch-matched build guide: official Path of Exile 2 Content Update 0.3.0 notes.

Patch history also includes the Tactician as a new Mercenary Ascendancy in update 0.2.0. That is class-history context, not a recommendation to take Tactician for this grenade route: official Path of Exile 2 Content Update 0.2.0 notes.

What gear should a beginner prioritize?

Follow the equipment priorities in the specific guide version you choose. The available listings and older campaign coverage identify gearing as part of progression, but the listing evidence does not establish current item names, affix priorities, costs, or required purchases. Crossbows, skills, support gems, and other gear discussed here are in-game items; this build does not require a physical crossbow or accessory.
