Short answer: Choose EasyEngine if you want an NGINX-first, self-directed Ubuntu VPS workflow with explicit backups, restore tools, logs, monitoring and team permissions. Choose ServerPilot if you prefer a hosted control plane that manages servers at your chosen cloud provider, offers one-click WordPress, multiple PHP versions, app isolation and a clearly published per-server/per-app bill. Neither removes your responsibility for the WordPress application, credentials, plugins, themes or cloud-provider account.

EasyEngine and ServerPilot solve different administration problems

Both products sit between you and a raw virtual private server, but their operating models differ. EasyEngine is built around running and administering your own Ubuntu-based WordPress stack. Its dashboard and CLI help you provision or import a server, configure NGINX and PHP, create sites, manage certificates, inspect logs, apply firewall rules and operate backups.

ServerPilot is a hosted management layer. You rent a VPS from the cloud provider of your choice, connect that server to ServerPilot, and use the control plane to create and maintain applications. ServerPilot manages the server software while you retain root access and ownership of the underlying machine and data.

That distinction matters more than a feature checklist. EasyEngine generally gives an experienced operator a more infrastructure-oriented workflow and more documented backup and team controls. ServerPilot generally gives a non-specialist a more guided path to multiple WordPress applications, with application isolation, automated updates and a predictable billing model.

How each platform is built

EasyEngine’s NGINX-centered stack

EasyEngine documents a stack composed of NGINX, PHP, MariaDB, Redis and WP-CLI, with MailHog available for mail testing. Sites can be WordPress, PHP or HTML applications running on your VPS with the EasyEngine CLI installed. The dashboard exposes SSL management, caching, PHP-version controls, backups, SSH/SFTP access, firewall settings, logs, monitoring and developer tools.

The server-management layer can import an Ubuntu machine over SSH or provision a new machine on AWS, DigitalOcean or Hetzner. The documentation says any Ubuntu server can be added, while new servers provisioned from the dashboard currently require Ubuntu 24.04. Treat that version requirement as changeable and confirm it before creating a machine.

ServerPilot’s NGINX-plus-Apache design

ServerPilot places NGINX at the public edge and Apache behind it. That arrangement keeps NGINX’s front-end handling while retaining Apache features that many WordPress plugins and legacy PHP applications expect, including .htaccess and mod_rewrite compatibility. ServerPilot also documents PHP-FPM process scaling, multiple PHP versions, HTTP/2, HTTP/3, MySQL, one-click WordPress installation, application migration and an API.

Because ServerPilot is a hosted control plane, the VPS still belongs to your cloud account. ServerPilot does not turn that machine into conventional managed WordPress hosting: you remain responsible for the provider account, capacity, DNS, application content and any work outside the platform’s controls.

What you need before choosing

  • A server and operating-system plan: EasyEngine’s dashboard provisioning currently targets Ubuntu 24.04; an imported server must be reachable over SSH. ServerPilot requires a VPS at a cloud provider that you can administer with root access.
  • A domain and DNS access: Point each site’s DNS records to the VPS address after the application is created. DNS changes can take time to propagate, so do not diagnose a healthy server as broken while records are still updating.
  • A capacity estimate: Count expected WordPress sites, traffic, PHP workers, database size, scheduled jobs and backup storage. A control panel cannot compensate for an undersized VPS.
  • A recovery destination: Decide where backup files will live and how you will retrieve them if the VPS fails. For EasyEngine, that can be S3-compatible storage; with ServerPilot, confirm the cloud provider’s snapshots or add a separate backup service.
  • An access policy: Prepare SSH keys, a root-break-glass procedure and named user accounts. Do not share one administrator credential among a team.

Setting up a WordPress VPS with EasyEngine

The exact labels can change as the dashboard evolves, but the documented workflow follows these stages.

  1. Prepare or select Ubuntu: Use Ubuntu 24.04 for a new dashboard-provisioned server, or prepare another supported Ubuntu server if you are importing one. Allocate enough CPU, memory and storage for WordPress, MariaDB, logs and backups.
  2. Connect the server: In the EasyEngine server-management area, choose the option to provision a server through a supported cloud provider or import one over SSH. Provide the provider and SSH-key details requested by the dashboard.
  3. Review the baseline: Confirm that NGINX, PHP, MariaDB, Redis, firewall controls and SSH-key management are enabled. Check the server health and performance graphs before adding production traffic.
  4. Create the site: In EE Sites, add a WordPress site and enter its domain. Select the PHP version and caching options appropriate to the application, then let the platform configure SSL and the web stack.
  5. Point DNS and issue SSL: Change the domain’s DNS records to the VPS address. Verify that the certificate is issued and that both the bare domain and the chosen www or non-www form redirect correctly.
  6. Harden access: Remove unused SSH keys, enforce named accounts for collaborators and review firewall rules. Keep WordPress administrator accounts separate from server accounts.
  7. Set the backup schedule: Configure manual or daily backups to S3-compatible storage, retain more than one generation and test downloading a backup file. A backup that has never been restored is only an assumption.
  8. Verify operations: Open the live NGINX, PHP and WordPress logs, review the activity timeline and check system statistics. Trigger a test restore on a non-production site before relying on one-click recovery.

Setting up a WordPress VPS with ServerPilot

  1. Choose the VPS: Create a server at your preferred cloud provider with root access. Select a size based on the number of applications and expected PHP and database load.
  2. Connect it to ServerPilot: In the ServerPilot dashboard, add the server and complete the provider’s root authentication process. Keep a separate emergency root path documented for incidents.
  3. Create an application: Add an app, choose its domain and PHP version, and use the one-click WordPress installer when appropriate. ServerPilot creates an isolated application context rather than placing every site under one shared Unix user.
  4. Configure DNS and TLS: Point the domain to the server, then enable AutoSSL so a Let’s Encrypt certificate is issued. Confirm renewal and test HTTPS before publishing the site.
  5. Select PHP and process capacity: Choose the PHP version required by the theme and plugins, then scale PHP-FPM processes as traffic warrants. Increase limits deliberately; excessive workers can exhaust memory.
  6. Install and update WordPress: Complete the WordPress setup, remove unused plugins and themes, enable automatic updates where your change-control policy permits and create a separate administrator account for each person.
  7. Add recovery controls: Configure the cloud provider’s snapshots or backup service and document how to restore files and MySQL data. ServerPilot’s management features should not be treated as a substitute for an independently verified backup.
  8. Inspect logs and metrics: Use the plan-appropriate log and resource views to establish a baseline, then watch memory, PHP workers, database load and disk growth after launch.

EasyEngine multi-site operation

Create each domain as a separate EE Site. The dashboard exposes site-level SSL, caching, PHP controls, firewall settings, logs and backups while the server view shows shared capacity. Team permissions can be scoped to sites and servers, which is useful when one person administers infrastructure and another manages content. Because all sites share the VPS, a memory spike or runaway PHP job on one site can still affect neighbors; monitor usage and set sensible PHP worker limits.

ServerPilot multi-app operation

ServerPilot assigns applications separate system users and filesystem ACLs, and runs PHP processes without unnecessary privileges. This reduces the chance that a compromised plugin in one app can directly read another app’s files, although it does not make a vulnerable WordPress installation safe. The server fee applies once per server and the app fee applies to each application, so adding sites has a predictable marginal cost.

Security: what the platforms automate and what they cannot

Infrastructure automation is not the same as WordPress security. EasyEngine documents firewall threat blocking, SSH-key administration, security alerts and permanent activity logs. ServerPilot documents an iptables firewall, automated updates, no exposed management ports, isolated users and ACLs, unprivileged PHP processes and AutoSSL certificates from Let’s Encrypt.

You still control the application attack surface. Plugins and themes can contain vulnerabilities, weak administrator passwords can be reused, outdated code can bypass a perfectly configured firewall and stolen API or SSH credentials can defeat isolation. Apply updates through a tested process, remove software you do not use, require strong unique credentials, limit administrator access and review logs for unexpected changes.

  • Server compromise: Revoke affected SSH keys, isolate the VPS at the provider firewall, preserve logs and rebuild from a known-good image or backup rather than trusting a cleaned server.
  • WordPress compromise: Disable the suspected plugin or theme, rotate WordPress, database and SSH credentials, compare files with trusted copies and inspect scheduled tasks and administrator accounts.
  • Certificate failure: Verify DNS points to the correct VPS, confirm ports 80 and 443 are reachable and check for conflicting proxy or firewall rules.

Backups and restoration are a major dividing line

EasyEngine’s documentation explicitly describes S3-compatible manual or daily backups, downloadable backup files and one-click restore. That makes the intended recovery workflow visible: choose storage, schedule copies, retain generations and restore a site when needed.

ServerPilot’s cited feature material concentrates on server and application management, migration and monitoring rather than promising an equivalent built-in backup workflow. Use your cloud provider’s snapshots or a separate backup product, and verify whether it captures both WordPress files and the MySQL database, how often it runs, how long copies are retained and whether restoration can target a new server.

For either platform, use the 3-2-1 principle operationally: keep multiple copies, on more than one storage system, with at least one copy outside the VPS. Test a full restore, not just the existence of a backup file. Record DNS, PHP-version, plugin and database steps so another administrator can recover the site under pressure.

Monitoring, logs and day-to-day operations

EasyEngine’s operational visibility

EasyEngine lists live NGINX, PHP and WordPress logs, usage and system statistics, server health and performance graphs, and New Relic integration. Its activity timeline can show who changed a setting, while firewall and SSH-key controls are available from the same management workflow. This combination favors teams that want infrastructure and site operations in one dashboard.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ServerPilot’s plan-dependent visibility

ServerPilot includes log viewing and resource metrics on Business and First Class plans. First Class adds app-request and MySQL metrics, which can help distinguish slow PHP execution from database contention. Economy includes core server and application management but does not provide the same documented depth of metrics, so confirm the current plan matrix before budgeting for observability.

Regardless of platform, establish baseline values for response time, PHP worker utilization, memory, disk space, database size, 5xx errors and backup age. Alert on trend changes rather than a single noisy sample.

Team access and accountability

EasyEngine documents admin, manager and member roles, organization settings, site/server permissions and permanent activity logs. That is useful when a client, developer and infrastructure administrator need different scopes of access.

ServerPilot’s retrieved documentation establishes API access and root access but does not establish an equivalent granular role system. If several people will operate the same account, determine how invitations, least-privilege access, audit trails and offboarding work before committing. You may need an external identity or ticketing process to fill gaps.

Pricing and total cost

ServerPilot publishes a server-plus-application model. As listed on its pricing page accessed October 15, 2026, Economy costs $5 per server plus $0.50 per app per month, Business costs $10 plus $1 per app and First Class costs $20 plus $2 per app. The page states hourly billing, so the monthly figures are useful reference points rather than a promise that every month will be identical.

ServerPilot tier Server charge Per-app charge Documented additions
Economy $5/month $0.50/month Server management, free SSL, one-click WordPress, firewall, automated updates, app isolation and multiple apps.
Business $10/month $1/month Economy features plus logs, resource metrics and higher-priority support.
First Class $20/month $2/month Business features plus app-request and MySQL metrics and the highest listed support priority.

For example, five apps on one Economy server would be $7.50 per month for ServerPilot before the VPS provider’s bill: $5 for the server and $2.50 for five apps. Ten apps on Business would be $20 per month before infrastructure: $10 plus $10. These calculations exclude the cloud server, storage, bandwidth, domain names, email, backups and any monitoring service.

The available EasyEngine feature and documentation pages link to plans and pricing but do not state a directly comparable numeric schedule. Check EasyEngine’s current billing page immediately before purchase rather than inferring a price from an old article or from ServerPilot’s model.

Performance: architecture is not a benchmark

EasyEngine’s NGINX-first stack and ServerPilot’s NGINX front end with internal Apache can both serve fast WordPress sites. Actual results depend on VPS CPU and memory, PHP version, PHP-FPM settings, database workload, object and page caching, plugin behavior, image sizes, geographic distance and traffic patterns. The available material does not provide a controlled side-by-side speed test, so declaring either product faster would be misleading.

If performance is decisive, test both on the same provider and VPS size with the same WordPress export, PHP version, plugin set, cache state and load profile. Measure uncached and cached requests, origin response time, 95th-percentile latency, error rate, CPU, memory, database load and recovery behavior after a cache flush. Keep the winner only if the difference persists across repeated runs.

Migration and lock-in considerations

EasyEngine documents server import, while ServerPilot documents application migration. In either direction, plan a staged move: lower DNS TTL ahead of time, copy files and the database, test on a temporary hostname, verify PHP compatibility and scheduled jobs, then switch DNS during a quiet period. Keep the old VPS available until the new site has served traffic and a fresh backup has completed.

Which platform is easier for a non-admin?

ServerPilot is usually the gentler starting point for someone who does not want to assemble a web stack. One-click WordPress, guided app creation, automated updates, AutoSSL, isolated users and multiple PHP versions reduce the number of low-level decisions. You still need to understand DNS, backups, plugin updates and the cloud provider’s billing and recovery tools.

EasyEngine is approachable when its dashboard matches your workflow, but it exposes more of the server lifecycle: choosing or importing Ubuntu, managing SSH keys, deciding where S3-compatible backups live, reviewing logs and assigning team permissions. That extra control is valuable for developers and agencies, but it rewards basic Linux and VPS knowledge.

Decision framework

Choose EasyEngine when

  • You want an NGINX-centered stack and direct responsibility for your Ubuntu server.
  • You need documented S3-compatible backups, downloadable files and one-click restore.
  • You operate a team that benefits from admin, manager and member permissions plus an activity timeline.
  • You want server provisioning or import integrated with site, firewall, log and monitoring controls.
  • You are comfortable checking current plan pricing and managing the cloud-provider relationship yourself.

Choose ServerPilot when

  • You want a hosted control plane that works with a VPS from your preferred provider.
  • You need one-click WordPress, multiple PHP versions, application migration and API access.
  • You value app isolation, automated updates, reduced exposed management surface and AutoSSL.
  • You prefer a published server-plus-app price that scales predictably with site count.
  • You want NGINX at the edge while retaining Apache and .htaccess compatibility for existing applications.

Choose neither until you resolve these gaps

  • You cannot explain how to restore both files and the database to a new VPS.
  • Your team requires granular permissions that the selected plan does not document.
  • Your workload needs managed database, email or high-availability services beyond a single VPS control panel.
  • You are selecting on a supposed speed advantage without testing the same workload on both stacks.

Common failure modes and fixes

The site shows a certificate or redirect error

Check DNS first, then confirm ports 80 and 443, firewall rules and the domain form configured in the panel. Remove conflicting proxy rules and wait for DNS propagation before reissuing a certificate.

WordPress returns 502 or 504 errors

Inspect PHP logs and worker utilization. A saturated PHP-FPM pool, exhausted memory, a slow plugin or a blocked database query can all produce gateway errors. Reduce concurrency, disable the suspected plugin on a staging copy and increase VPS capacity only after identifying the bottleneck.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

One application affects every other site

Check memory, CPU, disk I/O and PHP workers at the server level. Separate applications where possible, cap abusive jobs and schedule backups or imports outside peak traffic. ServerPilot’s per-application users improve filesystem isolation but do not create separate CPU and memory hardware.

A restore completes but the site is still broken

Verify that the database, uploads, configuration, PHP version, extensions, cron jobs and DNS all match the restored site. Test a restore on a clean staging VPS so hidden dependencies become visible before an emergency.

Bottom line

EasyEngine is the stronger fit for an operator who wants to run an NGINX-first Ubuntu workflow and values explicit backup, restore, monitoring and team controls. ServerPilot is the stronger fit for someone who wants a provider-agnostic, hosted control plane with one-click WordPress, isolated applications, multiple PHP versions and transparent per-server/per-app pricing. Make the final choice on control model, recovery responsibility, team access and total app count—not on an unverified claim that one stack is inherently faster.
