What RLCraft is
RLCraft is a complete Minecraft gameplay package built around hardcore, semi-realistic survival, RPG systems, and adventure exploration. Shivaxi originally assembled it for a private server and friends, then released the finished collection as a public modpack. That history matters because the project is not simply a popular mod with a distinctive configuration. The pack is the product: its individual mods, settings, scripts, and compatibility choices are intended to work together.

CurseForge categorizes the official project under Modpacks. The canonical release is RLCraft 1.12.2 v2.9.3, a Forge pack released on June 27, 2023. The files list also contains older 1.11.2 releases, so “RLCraft” without a version number does not identify every file in the project.
Mod versus modpack: the distinction
A Minecraft mod is an individual modification that adds or changes a defined feature, system, block, creature, interface, or technical function. A modpack is a distribution that groups multiple mods with a specific Minecraft version, loader, configuration, and often scripts or resource files.

RLCraft therefore remains a modpack even though every item inside it may be a conventional mod. Calling one of its components “an RLCraft mod” does not change the classification of the downloadable RLCraft project.
How many mods are in RLCraft?
The RLCraft Wiki describes approximately 185 mods, or 186 with OptiFine. The number should be treated as a count for the documented pack configuration, not a promise that every launcher profile, optional component, or later community build will show exactly the same total.

Shivaxi describes hand-selecting and individually tweaking the mods to fit a particular play style, checking that they worked fluidly together, and adding custom scripts for changes to vanilla behavior. This integration is one of the main reasons installing a random selection of the same mod names does not produce RLCraft.

Examples of individual components
- RLMixins is an individual technical mod used within the broader pack.
- Lycanites Mobs is an individual content mod that contributes creatures and related systems.
- OptiFine is counted separately in the Wiki’s approximate total when it is included.
These examples are components, not alternative names for the entire project. Removing, replacing, or reconfiguring them can produce a different modded Minecraft instance even if it still launches.
What the pack is designed to do
The official description characterizes RLCraft as a “hardcore and semi-realism challenge” centered on survival, RPG elements, and adventure-like exploration. In practical terms, the pack changes the assumptions of ordinary vanilla survival. Progression, danger, exploration, and equipment are shaped by a large set of interacting systems rather than by one new mechanic.
- Hardcore survival: the pack is intended to make basic survival and risk management substantially more demanding than a standard vanilla world.
- Semi-realistic rules: selected vanilla behaviors are changed to support the pack’s harsher survival model.
- RPG progression: character-oriented systems and equipment choices add progression beyond the normal vanilla loop.
- Adventure exploration: exploration is a central purpose, with the integrated content and world systems supporting a more dangerous journey.
“Hardcore” here describes the challenge design; it should not be read as a claim that every installation automatically uses Minecraft’s one-life Hardcore world mode. The exact death and world settings depend on the release and the way a player configures a world.

Which RLCraft version should you install?

When following a guide, match its Minecraft version and pack release before copying settings or adding files. A mod built for 1.12.2 is not automatically interchangeable with one for 1.11.2, even when the mod has a similar name.
How to install the RLCraft client
The supported, least error-prone approach is to use the CurseForge launcher and install the project as a modpack profile. The labels can change slightly between launcher versions, but the sequence is the same.
Before you start
- Install Minecraft Java Edition and sign in with the account that owns it.
- Install the CurseForge app or another launcher that can import CurseForge modpacks.
- Keep enough free disk space for the profile, its libraries, Java files, and world saves.
- Close other heavy applications if the computer has limited memory; a large pack needs more headroom than vanilla Minecraft.
Launcher procedure
- Open CurseForge and choose Minecraft from the game list.
- Open Browse or Discover, search for RLCraft, and verify that the author is Shivaxi.
- Select the profile that targets Minecraft 1.12.2, checking the displayed release rather than assuming the newest result is the same file described by an older guide.
- Choose Install. The launcher downloads the pack’s mod files and configuration instead of asking you to assemble roughly 185 components manually.
- After installation, open the new RLCraft profile and use Play. Allow the launcher to finish any first-run downloads before starting a world.
- Create or select a world only after the title screen loads without errors. Keep the profile isolated from other modded instances so another pack’s mods or configurations are not copied into it.
If you use a different launcher, import the official CurseForge profile or manifest where supported. Manually copying individual jars is not equivalent to installing the pack because the configuration files and scripts are part of the intended setup.

Installing an RLCraft server
Client files and server files serve different purposes. The official project provides a separate RLCraft Server Pack for administrators. Use that package rather than trying to turn a client profile into a server by deleting a few files.
- Obtain the server-pack release that matches the client release you want players to use, such as the 1.12.2 v2.9.3 line.
- Extract it into a new server directory and follow the package’s included startup and EULA instructions.
- Run the server once so it can generate its required files, then stop it before changing configuration.
- Give every player the matching RLCraft client profile. A player on a different release, Minecraft version, or modified configuration may fail the connection check or encounter mismatched gameplay.
- Back up the world and configuration directory before updating. Treat a pack update as a coordinated change, not as a single-mod replacement.
The server-pack workflow is another practical sign that RLCraft is distributed as a modpack: the project supplies a prepared server-side collection rather than only one client mod.

A large modpack can take longer to start and can use more memory than vanilla Minecraft. Do not apply the RAM figures published for every related project indiscriminately. The documented 6–8 GB recommendation, with 8 GB for servers, belongs to the related RLCraft Dregora listing; it is not stated as a universal requirement for every RLCraft installation.

If the launcher cannot find the pack
- Search the exact project name and confirm the author is Shivaxi.
- Check that the Minecraft game type is Java Edition and that the launcher is connected to the correct account.
- Look for the 1.12.2 profile rather than selecting an unrelated similarly named project.
If the game crashes during startup
- Confirm that the launcher is starting the installed RLCraft profile, not a vanilla or different Forge profile.
- Remove manually added mods and shader files first; extra files can conflict with the pack’s pinned configuration.
- Verify that Java and the launcher meet the requirements shown by your current CurseForge installation, then retry with the unmodified profile.
- If the profile was partially downloaded, repair or reinstall that profile instead of replacing random jars one at a time.
If a server rejects a player
- Compare the client and server release numbers, Minecraft version, and modpack profile.
- Use the official server pack corresponding to the client build.
- Check whether either side has had an individual mod, configuration, or script added or removed.
Why calling RLCraft “one mod” causes problems
Using the wrong term is not just a vocabulary error. A player who expects one mod may download a component such as Lycanites Mobs, launch Minecraft, and wonder why the rest of the RLCraft systems are missing. Conversely, someone who adds a random “RLCraft” jar to an existing instance may overlook the Forge version, configurations, scripts, and dependency set that define the actual pack.

For support, name the complete profile and release: RLCraft 1.12.2 v2.9.3 is much more useful than “RLCraft mod.” This tells a helper which Minecraft version, loader family, and pack generation you mean.
Bottom line
