Eberron: Forge of the Artificer revises the Artificer for D&D’s new Core Rules, adds five subclasses—including the new Cartographer—and supplies a wider set of options for players and Dungeon Masters. Calling the Artificer D&D’s “coolest” class is a matter of taste; the stronger case for this book is that its revised class and Eberron-specific tools give inventive, gadget-minded characters and their campaigns more room to take shape.
What changes for the Artificer?
Wizards of the Coast describes the book’s Artificer as revised for the new Core Rules and lists five subclasses, including Cartographer. That makes the class the clearest reason for players to consider the book, especially if they want a character built around magical invention and a distinct Eberron identity. The publisher’s official preview focuses specifically on what is new with the class.
The available product description establishes that the class has been revised and identifies the subclass lineup’s size and new Cartographer option. It does not, by itself, establish that the revision is more powerful, better balanced, or preferred by players. “Even better” is best understood as an editorial judgment about the added character-building possibilities, not a measurable ranking against other D&D classes.
How the book broadens Eberron character creation
The class is only part of the package. The official Wizards of the Coast store listing describes five revised species, 18 backgrounds, 28 feats, and new spells. Those options offer more routes into an Eberron character beyond choosing an Artificer subclass; the listing does not claim that every option is equally substantial or right for every campaign.

Dragonmarks become feats
The store listing says Dragonmarks have been redesigned as feats and are no longer species-locked. That is a notable character-building change: the mark is presented as a feat choice rather than an option restricted to a particular species. Wizards’ 2025 Unearthed Arcana also includes Artificer and Dragonmark material, but it is playtest content, not the final book’s rules. Use the published book for the final wording and mechanics.
What Dungeon Masters get
For a Dungeon Master, the book’s listed contents reach beyond player options. The publisher includes bastions, magic items, more than 20 monsters, and three campaign models. These are useful categories of support for an Eberron game, but the listing alone does not establish how much guidance each contains or how well a particular option will fit an existing table.
Rank #2
- This book provides everything players and Dungeon Masters need to play Dungeons & Dragons in Eberron—a war-torn world filled with magic-fueled technology
- Collect all D&D books and play with your friends!
Wizards presents the book as focused on Eberron campaign play, including fantasy noir, political thriller, and pulp adventure. Those approaches can help a group decide what kind of story to build: investigation and atmosphere, competing interests and intrigue, or fast-moving action. The campaign models are an invitation to shape a game around those tones, not a guarantee that every table will want the same version of Eberron.
Who is the book for?
- Artificer players: The revised class and five-subclass lineup, including Cartographer, are the most direct draw.
- Players building an Eberron character: Species, backgrounds, feats, spells, and redesigned Dragonmark feats expand the choices listed by the publisher.
- Dungeon Masters running Eberron: Campaign models, bastions, monsters, and magic items provide material beyond character creation.
- Groups still deciding on a campaign tone: The publisher’s fantasy-noir, political-thriller, and pulp-adventure framing offers distinct starting points.
Release timing and editions
The release schedule changed after a printing issue. The U.S. store listing gave December 9, 2025 as the expected release date for the corrected physical product; an earlier D&D Beyond release update said purchasers would receive the book on November 25, 2025, two weeks early, depending on the version purchased. These are release-history dates, not confirmation of current stock or availability. The publisher lists physical and digital editions; check its current listing or your retailer for present-day edition options and availability.
