efsadu.dll Won’t Load: Trace the Windows Component Safely

efsadu.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system DLL, not a random file generated by an application. If efsadu.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair Windows first unless the error appears only when starting one older program.

The file is associated with the Windows Encrypting File System and is recorded as “File Encryption Utility.” It is not a Visual C++ Redistributable, .NET assembly, DirectX file, or ordinary graphics-driver component.

efsadu.dll version and architecture

Historical file inventories associate efsadu.dll with Microsoft Corporation and Microsoft Windows Operating System. The following entries are reported in public inventories, but they are not an official Microsoft release catalog:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Architecture Reported version Reported size
64-bit 10.0.14393.0 0.12 MB
32-bit 10.0.14393.0 0.1 MB
32-bit 10.0.10586.0 0.1 MB
64-bit 10.0.10586.0 0.11 MB
64-bit 6.0.6001.18000 0.1 MB

Microsoft documents EFS as a Windows file-based encryption feature. The exact presence and build coverage of efsadu.dll on a current Windows installation can vary, so do not treat an old version table as a reason to download that exact file.

On 64-bit Windows, the normal architecture locations are:

  • 64-bit Windows system components: %SystemRoot%System32
  • 32-bit system components used through WoW64: %SystemRoot%SysWOW64

The folder names are counterintuitive. System32 normally contains 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit files. Do not copy a DLL into either folder based only on its filename.

First, identify the exact failure

The message can provide an important clue. Reported variants include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • “The program can’t start because efsadu.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “The code execution cannot proceed because efsadu.dll was not found.”
  • “There was a problem starting efsadu.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
  • “Error loading efsadu.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
  • “efsadu.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
  • “The file efsadu.dll is missing or corrupted.”

These wordings are common loader-error variants reported by third-party error databases. They do not prove that the named file is the actual root cause. In particular, “the specified module could not be found” can mean that a dependency required by efsadu.dll is missing.

Before changing anything, note:

  1. Which application displays the error.
  2. Whether every application fails or only one.
  3. Whether the problem started after an update, driver installation, security alert, or application change.
  4. Whether the failing program is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  5. Whether the file is missing from Windows directories or exists somewhere else.

That information determines whether you should repair Windows or repair the application.

Fix 1: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

This is the safest first repair when several programs or Windows features are affected, or when the file may have been deleted or corrupted.

Microsoft recommends repairing the Windows component store with DISM and then checking protected system files with System File Checker.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run DISM

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  4. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  5. Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Wait for the command to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to stop temporarily.

DISM uses Windows servicing files to repair the component store. A successful completion normally reports that the restore operation completed successfully.

Run SFC

When DISM finishes, run this command in the same elevated window:

sfc /scannow

Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent.

The useful results are:

  • Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: protected system files are intact. Restart and test the affected program.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart Windows, then test the program again.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: run DISM again, restart, and run sfc /scannow once more.
  • Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation: restart into normal Windows, confirm the Command Prompt is elevated, and repeat the scan.

Restart after the repair even if the command reports success.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If SFC still cannot repair files, review the details in:

%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log

Do not replace efsadu.dll manually based on a single SFC line. The component store and the surrounding dependencies must remain consistent.

Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the guesswork when you are repeatedly hunting corrupted Windows components and comparing repair results by hand. Its free scan shows what it identifies, while repairs are performed by the full version, and it is not required for DISM or SFC.

If DISM cannot find repair files

DISM may report that the source files could not be found, particularly when Windows Update is unavailable or the local component store is damaged.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft documents using a matching Windows installation source with /Source and /LimitAccess. The source must match the installed Windows edition, language, and relevant version closely enough for servicing to use it.

The general form is:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:<path> /LimitAccess

Replace <path> with a valid repair-source path. Do not guess a folder or use an unrelated Windows image. An incompatible source can fail or leave you with an unsuitable repair.

After DISM completes, run:

sfc /scannow

Restart and test again.

Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the affected application

If only one older application reports efsadu.dll, the application is more likely to be damaged, incompatible, or expecting a dependency that is not present. Public reports have included older 32-bit applications and enterprise software that listed EFSADU.DLL during dependency checks, but there is no reliable evidence that one current game or redistributable is the dominant cause.

Repair a Windows-installed application

On Windows 11:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Choose Apps.
  4. Select Installed apps.
  5. Find the affected application.
  6. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  7. Choose Advanced options.
  8. Select Repair.
  9. Start the application again.

The Repair option preserves the application’s data where supported. If it does not resolve the error, return to the same screen and use Reset only if you understand that the application’s settings or local data may be removed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On Windows 10:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Choose Apps & features.
  4. Select the affected application.
  5. Choose Advanced options if available.
  6. Select Repair.

Some desktop programs do not expose these Windows options. In that case, open the application’s installer from Apps, Programs and Features, or the original setup media and select Repair if offered.

Reinstall the exact application

If Repair does not work:

  1. Back up the application’s profiles, saved projects, templates, or license information.
  2. Uninstall the affected application from Settings > Apps.
  3. Restart Windows.
  4. Install the vendor-supported version using its original installer or official account.
  5. Restart again if the installer requests it.
  6. Test the application before adding plugins or third-party extensions.

If the error returns only after adding a plugin, compatibility layer, or old project component, remove that addition and test again. If the program is obsolete, check whether the vendor supports the installed Windows version before trying compatibility settings.

Do not assume that reinstalling Visual C++ will restore efsadu.dll. Install or repair a Visual C++ package only when the same application separately reports a missing file such as MSVCP, MSVCR, or VCRUNTIME.

Fix 3: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility

A 32-bit application may use the 32-bit Windows copy through WoW64, while a 64-bit application uses the 64-bit system environment. A mismatch can produce confusing loader messages.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check where Windows has the file

Open File Explorer and inspect these locations:

C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64

On a system installed to another drive or directory, use %SystemRoot% instead of assuming C:Windows.

Do not copy a file from one folder to the other. Do not rename a 32-bit file to make it appear suitable for a 64-bit program. If Windows genuinely needs the component, DISM and SFC are the correct restoration path.

Check the application architecture

Windows does not provide one universal architecture label for every executable, but you can often determine it from the application vendor’s documentation, installer, task manager details, or a trusted executable inspection tool. If the program is explicitly labeled x86, treat it as 32-bit. If it is labeled x64, treat it as 64-bit.

If only an x86 application fails, repair or reinstall that application first. If both 32-bit and 64-bit programs fail, prioritize Windows servicing and malware checks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 4: Check whether security software quarantined the file

Security software can remove or quarantine a file after a detection or false positive. Do not restore a quarantined DLL simply because an application requests it.

Check Windows Security Protection history

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security.
  3. Open it.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Choose Protection history.
  6. Review recent detections.
  7. Open a relevant item and inspect its path, detection name, and action.
  8. Restore the file only if you are confident it is a legitimate Microsoft component in the expected Windows context.

Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined item is appropriate only when you are confident it is a false positive. If the file was found outside the normal Windows component locations, do not restore it automatically.

After a suspicious detection:

  1. Update Microsoft Defender security intelligence.
  2. Run a full scan.
  3. Remove or isolate malware if detected.
  4. Run DISM and SFC after the system is clean.
  5. Restart and test the affected application.

A file named efsadu.dll outside the normal Windows directories could be an application copy, a compatibility artifact, or malware. Check its path and Microsoft signature before making a judgment.

Fix 5: Check dependencies instead of replacing the named DLL

A loader message can name efsadu.dll even when another dependency is the missing component. This is particularly relevant when the message says “The specified module could not be found” but the file visibly exists.

Use this order:

  1. Repair the application.
  2. Repair Windows with DISM and SFC.
  3. Check whether the application separately reports a runtime, driver, or framework file.
  4. Install only the dependency documented by the application vendor or Microsoft.
  5. Test again after each change.

Do not install several unrelated runtimes at random. Multiple Visual C++ Redistributables can coexist, but none should be installed merely because efsadu.dll appears in an error message.

Fix 6: Apply Windows updates and review recent changes

A missing system component can follow an interrupted update, system cleanup, driver installation, or failed software setup.

Install available Windows updates

On Windows 11:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Choose Check for updates.
  4. Install available updates.
  5. Restart when prompted.
  6. Check again after the restart.

On Windows 10:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Update & Security.
  3. Choose Windows Update.
  4. Select Check for updates.
  5. Install available updates and restart.

Windows 10 reached the end of free support on October 14, 2025. Do not assume that a Windows 10 installation receives the same ongoing support or update coverage as a supported Windows release.

Undo a recent update or installation

If the error began immediately after a specific change:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Windows Update > Update history on Windows 11, or Update & Security > Windows Update > View update history on Windows 10.
  3. Review the latest quality, driver, or feature updates.
  4. Use the available uninstall option only for the update that matches the timing.
  5. Restart and test.

Avoid removing multiple updates at once. If the issue started after an application or driver installation rather than Windows Update, uninstall that specific item first.

Fix 7: Update or reinstall a relevant driver only when evidence points there

efsadu.dll is not a graphics-driver DLL. A driver should not be your first repair simply because a game or older application fails. Consider a driver only when the error began immediately after a device-driver change, Device Manager shows a problem, or the application’s own documentation identifies a driver dependency.

Check Device Manager

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the device category related to the failure, such as Display adapters, Storage controllers, or System devices.
  4. Look for a yellow warning icon.
  5. Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
  6. Read the status on the General tab.
  7. On the Driver tab, note the provider and date.
  8. Use Update Driver only when you have a suitable official driver source.
  9. If the problem began after the latest driver change, use Roll Back Driver if that button is available.
  10. Restart Windows and test the application.

If the device remains faulty, download the driver from the PC, motherboard, or device manufacturer’s official support page. Avoid generic driver download sites.

Outbyte Driver Updater can show which drivers it identifies when manually checking dozens of devices is the problem. Its free scan identifies candidates, while installation is handled by the full version, and a driver update is not a substitute for repairing the Windows component or the affected application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 8: Use System Restore for a recent system-level failure

System Restore is useful when efsadu.dll errors began after a driver, update, or installation and the earlier system state was working.

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Enter:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point dated before the problem began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  5. Review the changes.
  6. Select Next, then Finish.
  7. Allow Windows to restart and complete the restoration.

System Restore normally affects system files, settings, drivers, and installed programs, not personal documents. Review the affected-program list before confirming.

If no suitable restore point exists, or Windows remains unstable after restoration, use an in-place repair installation or Windows recovery options. Reset this PC is more disruptive and should be considered only after backing up important data and understanding which reset option you are selecting.

What not to do

Do not download a random efsadu.dll file

There is no normal Microsoft standalone efsadu.dll download package. Unaffiliated DLL sites can provide the wrong version, architecture, language, signing status, or dependency set. A replacement can also conceal the real problem, leave Windows servicing inconsistent, or introduce malware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Windows Update, matching Windows installation media, DISM, SFC, System Restore, or the affected application’s official installer instead.

Do not copy files into System32 or SysWOW64 blindly

The correct folder depends on the architecture and Windows environment. Copying a 32-bit file into System32, or a 64-bit file into SysWOW64, does not repair the application and can create additional loader problems.

Do not use regsvr32 as a general DLL repair command

regsvr32 applies to DLLs that provide COM registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a universal command for ordinary Windows system DLLs.

There is no reliable evidence that this repairs efsadu.dll:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
regsvr32 efsadu.dll

Running it may instead produce an entry-point or module-registration error. Use regsvr32 only when the software vendor specifically documents that the particular DLL is a self-registering COM component.

Do not disable antivirus protection to force a launch

If security software quarantined the file, investigate the detection and verify the path and signature. Disabling protection or restoring an unknown copy can make a system compromise worse.

Frequently asked questions

Is efsadu.dll a real Microsoft file?

Yes. It is associated with Microsoft Windows and the Windows Encrypting File System. Its recorded description is “File Encryption Utility,” and historical inventories identify Microsoft Corporation as the publisher.

Is efsadu.dll part of Visual C++?

No Microsoft source identifies it as a Visual C++ Redistributable file. Repair Visual C++ only when the application separately reports a missing Visual C++ runtime file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I download efsadu.dll separately?

No. Use DISM followed by SFC for a Windows component, or repair and reinstall the application when only one program fails. A random DLL copy may have the wrong architecture or may be unsafe.

Why does Windows say “the specified module could not be found” when the file exists?

The named DLL may depend on another missing or damaged module. Repair the application and Windows, then investigate the dependency chain instead of replacing the visible file.

Does efsadu.dll belong in System32 or SysWOW64?

On 64-bit Windows, the 64-bit system copy normally belongs in System32, while the 32-bit copy used by WoW64 normally belongs in SysWOW64. Do not move or copy the file manually.

Will regsvr32 efsadu.dll fix the error?

Generally, no. regsvr32 is for self-registering COM DLLs and is not a general Windows DLL repair tool. Use DISM, SFC, Windows servicing, or application repair instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if the error appears only in an old application?

Repair or reinstall that application first. Test its vendor-supported version and compatibility options. If Windows itself is stable and other applications work, the problem is more likely application-specific than a damaged Windows installation.

What if DISM and SFC do not fix it?

Confirm that the application is not the only failing program, check Protection history, verify architecture, and use a matching Windows installation source if DISM cannot obtain repair files. For a recent system-wide change, try System Restore. If Windows remains unstable, consider an in-place repair installation or a carefully prepared reset.
