The program can't start because notify.dll is missing from your computer.
If Windows reports that notify.dll was not found, could not be loaded, or is corrupted, the file is usually connected to the legacy Timbuktu Pro 2000 remote-control application rather than Windows itself.

- The error names Timbuktu Pro: Repair or reinstall Timbuktu Pro first.
- The error appeared after uninstalling Timbuktu: Remove the leftover startup entry or reinstall Timbuktu, then uninstall it cleanly.
- Windows Security recently quarantined a file: Review Protection history before restoring anything.
- The file exists in
System32orSysWOW64: Treat it as nonstandard and verify its origin. - The error names another executable: Investigate that program first. A filename alone does not prove that every
notify.dllbelongs to Timbuktu. - Several Windows components are failing: Run DISM and SFC, but do not expect them to recreate this application DLL.
- The program is very old and still fails after reinstalling: Check compatibility and consider running the software only in a supported legacy environment.
- You found the error through a random DLL website: Do not download or register the offered file. Recover the complete Timbuktu installation instead.
What is notify.dll?
notify.dll is identified as the Notify Service component of Timbuktu Pro 2000, a remote-control product associated with Netopia, Inc. Timbuktu’s Notify service alerted a user when another Timbuktu computer became active and provided remote-user activity information.

Public file inventories report a 32-bit Win32 file with version 2.0.0.0, a reported size of approximately 255,488 bytes, and the description Notify Service. Those details describe reported historical metadata, not a guarantee that every file named notify.dll has the same version, size, publisher information, or origin.
The expected location is the Timbuktu application directory selected during installation, normally under a program folder in Program Files or another location chosen by the installer. It should not normally be copied to:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Microsoft documents that applications commonly load private DLLs from their own installation folders. Putting an application DLL into a system search path can create loading conflicts and security risks.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall Timbuktu Pro
This is the most likely solution because the missing file belongs to Timbuktu rather than Windows.
Identify the program that is failing
- Write down the complete error message.
- Note the executable named in the title bar or message.
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager if the program briefly appears. - Select the Details tab.
- If the executable is listed, right-click it and choose Open file location.
- Check whether the folder belongs to Timbuktu Pro.
You can also open Event Viewer:
- Press
Win+R. - Type
eventvwr.mscand press Enter. - Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Look for an error recorded at the time the message appeared.
- Record the failing application name and full path.
If the executable is not part of Timbuktu, do not assume that reinstalling Timbuktu will solve the problem. The same filename can theoretically be used by unrelated software.
Try Windows Installer repair
- Press
Win+R. - Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Select Timbuktu Pro in the installed-program list.
- Choose Change, Repair, or the installer’s repair option.
- Follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the application again.
A successful repair should restore the DLL to the Timbuktu application folder and allow the program to start without the missing-file message.
Reinstall from the complete original package
If repair is unavailable or fails:
- In Programs and Features, select Timbuktu Pro.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall from the original CD, a trusted installer archive, or an organization’s known-good software backup.
- Restart again before testing the program.
Historical Timbuktu Pro installation instructions refer to TimbuktuPro.msi and a Tb2ProWin.exe installer archive. Use the complete installer rather than obtaining notify.dll separately.
If the original installer is unavailable, do not substitute a DLL from a download site. Search an organization’s software archive, original installation media, or a backup made from the same Timbuktu build. If the program is no longer needed, uninstalling the obsolete software is safer than rebuilding it from an unknown file.
Confirm that the repair worked
Check all three points:
- Timbuktu launches without mentioning
notify.dll. - A copy of the file exists inside the Timbuktu program folder, not just in a Windows system directory.
- The application’s normal remote-control or Notify functions work as expected.
Timbuktu is legacy software. Successful installation does not prove that the program is fully compatible with current Windows 10 or Windows 11 releases.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may remove or quarantine an old application DLL. Do not immediately restore it.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
notify.dllor the Timbuktu installation folder. - Expand the entry and review its detected path and action.
Restore the file only when all of these conditions are true:
- It came from the original Timbuktu installer or a verified organizational backup.
- Its path is the expected Timbuktu application directory.
- The file’s digital signature, if present, is consistent with the product.
- A second reputable security scan does not identify it as malicious.
To inspect a file manually:
- Right-click the file.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab if it exists.
- Review the signer and signature status.
- Open the Details tab and record the reported description and version.
You can also record its hash without treating the result as an official checksum. In PowerShell, use:
Get-FileHash "C:PathTonotify.dll" -Algorithm SHA256
There is no reason to restore a file obtained from an unofficial DLL website. Do not broadly disable Microsoft Defender or create an antivirus exclusion just to make Timbuktu start.
If Protection history shows that the file was removed, the safer remedy is usually to reinstall Timbuktu from its original package. Microsoft also warns that restoring a quarantined file places it back on the computer and may cause it to be detected again.
Fix 3: Check the application folder and architecture
The reported notify.dll metadata identifies a 32-bit DLL. A 32-bit application generally requires its 32-bit dependencies even when it runs on 64-bit Windows.

To inspect the application:
- Find the Timbuktu executable.
- Right-click it and choose Properties.
- Open Details and record the product information.
- Use the application’s installation folder as the reference location for its private DLLs.
If you have a trusted replacement from original media, restore it only to the matching Timbuktu program directory. Preserve the existing file first by renaming it rather than deleting it. Reinstalling the complete program remains preferable because it restores related files, services, registry entries, and dependencies together.
An architecture mismatch can also produce messages such as:
notify.dll could not be loadedThe procedure entry point was not foundnotify.dll is not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error
These messages do not prove that the file itself is missing. They can indicate a damaged file, an incompatible build, or a missing dependency.

A leftover service, shortcut, or startup entry may still attempt to load notify.dll after Timbuktu has been removed.
- Press
Win+R. - Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Check whether Timbuktu Pro is still listed.
- If it is listed, repair or uninstall it normally.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select Startup apps.
- Disable an obsolete Timbuktu entry if it remains.
- Restart and check whether the error has disappeared.
Do not delete random registry entries based only on the filename. If the error persists after the program has been removed, use Event Viewer to identify the executable or service that is still requesting the DLL.
If the original software is required, reinstalling it and then removing it through its own uninstaller is usually cleaner than manually deleting leftover files.
Fix 5: Check for a missing dependency
An error naming notify.dll does not prove that notify.dll is the only missing component. Windows may be reporting the first file involved in a failed loading chain while another Timbuktu dependency is damaged or absent.

- Any Event Viewer details.
- Whether the problem began after cleanup software, an update, an uninstall, a restore, or an antivirus detection.
Then repair or reinstall the complete Timbuktu package. Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET merely because a DLL is missing. Use those packages only when the actual error names a Microsoft runtime component that they provide.
Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent system change
System Restore can help if the error began immediately after a driver installation, application change, or system configuration change. It is not the first choice for replacing an application-private DLL.
- Press
Win+R. - Type
rstrui.exeand press Enter. - Select Choose a different restore point if that option appears.
- Pick a restore point from before the failure began.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the changes.
- Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not normally affect personal documents, but it can remove applications, drivers, and updates installed after the selected restore point. If the error remains afterward, repair or reinstall Timbuktu Pro.
Fix 7: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged
SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components. They normally do not recreate a third-party DLL belonging to Timbuktu.

- Open Start.

- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test Timbuktu again.
Run DISM before SFC. If SFC reports that it found no integrity violations, that is not evidence that Timbuktu is repaired. It may simply mean that Windows system files are intact while the application DLL remains missing.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make this diagnosis harder. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the broader Windows problems that are difficult to identify manually; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair is performed by the full version. Reinstalling Timbuktu remains the definitive fix when notify.dll itself belongs to that program.
Fix 8: Do not update drivers unless the error names one
Device Manager does not restore notify.dll, and a graphics, audio, chipset, or network driver is not a likely cause of a standalone Timbuktu DLL error.
Open Device Manager only if the error also identifies a device or driver:
- Press
Win+R. - Type
devmgmt.mscand press Enter. - Expand the relevant device category.
- Right-click the device.
- Choose Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Record the provider, date, and version.
- Use Update Driver or reinstall the driver from the hardware manufacturer.
Do not replace drivers simply because Timbuktu is old. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers when manually checking many hardware versions is impractical; its free scan identifies issues, while installation is handled by the full version. A driver update is not a substitute for repairing Timbuktu Pro.

Usually, no.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. The available public information for this historical file does not establish that notify.dll is a self-registering COM DLL.

regsvr32 notify.dll
Use registration only if a trusted Timbuktu installer or product instruction explicitly requires it. In that situation, use the registration tool matching the DLL and application architecture, and run it from an elevated Command Prompt. Do not copy the file to System32 before attempting registration.
For normal Timbuktu repair, let the installer restore any required registration automatically.

Windows Features cannot install Timbuktu’s Notify Service.
To review optional Windows components:
- Press
Win+R. - Type
optionalfeatures.exeand press Enter. - Review the list of Windows components.
Do not enable random legacy components to cure notify.dll errors. Enable a feature only when the error specifically names that Windows feature or a documented dependency.

Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Downloading an isolated notify.dll can fail in several ways:
- The file may contain malware.
- It may be the wrong Timbuktu build.
- It may have the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- It may be damaged or modified.
- It may lack related files that the application also needs.
- It may be placed in the wrong directory.
- It may conceal a partial uninstall or broken installation.
The safe sources are the original Timbuktu Pro CD, a complete installer archive, or a trusted organizational backup of the same product build. If none exists, do not use a random replacement DLL. Remove the obsolete application or run it in a controlled legacy environment only when the software is genuinely required.
Prevention and final checks
After repairing the application:
- Keep the complete installer and its license information in a trusted archive.
- Avoid registry cleaners and “DLL fixer” utilities that remove application files.
- Keep the file inside the Timbuktu application directory.
- Do not whitelist unknown DLLs in antivirus software.
- Record the exact Timbuktu build and Windows version.
- Test the application after major Windows or security-software changes.
- Keep a backup before modifying a legacy installation.
If the error continues, capture the exact executable path, full error message, Event Viewer entry, file location, Windows version, and Timbuktu version. The next failure may identify a different missing dependency or a compatibility problem rather than notify.dll itself.
FAQ
Is notify.dll a Windows file?
No. The available provenance identifies it with the Timbuktu Pro Notify Service, not with a standard Windows component.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Which Timbuktu version uses notify.dll?
It is associated with Timbuktu Pro 2000. Historical installation material also describes older Timbuktu Pro Windows packages and their Windows Installer files.
Is notify.dll 32-bit?
Reported public metadata identifies it as a 32-bit Win32 DLL. Treat that as historical file metadata and restore the file through the matching Timbuktu installation rather than manually substituting it.
Should I copy notify.dll to System32?
No. The file normally belongs in the Timbuktu application directory.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not for a standalone notify.dll message. Install a runtime only when the error explicitly names a component supplied by that runtime.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Can SFC repair notify.dll?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows files, not arbitrary third-party application files.
What if antivirus quarantined the file?
Verify the path and provenance first. Restore only a legitimate file from the original Timbuktu installation, and do not restore or whitelist a copy from an unofficial download source.
What if I no longer have the Timbuktu installer?
Search original media, a trusted organizational archive, or a known-good backup. If none is available and the application is not essential, uninstall it rather than downloading an isolated DLL.
