ehsso.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows Media Center component, not a normal game, graphics, or Visual C++ runtime file. If Windows 10 or Windows 11 reports that ehsso.dll is missing, the correct fix depends first on whether an old Windows Media Center installation or legacy application is involved.
Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before downloading anything or changing system folders, record:

- Which program shows the error: Windows Explorer, an old Media Center installation, or a specific application.
- The exact message: “ehsso.dll is missing,” “was not found,” “could not be located,” or a crash report naming ehsso.dll.
- When it appears: during startup, when opening a folder, after an update, or after antivirus software removed a file.
- Your Windows edition: press Windows key + R, type
winver, and press Enter. - Your system architecture: open Settings → System → About and check System type for 64-bit or 32-bit Windows.
- The file location: the expected legacy path is usually
C:WindowsehomeehSSO.dll.
Do not assume that a missing-file message means a random DLL should be copied into System32. On supported Windows 10 and Windows 11 installations, Windows Media Center is removed or unsupported, so recreating it with a loose DLL is usually the wrong approach.
What ehsso.dll is and where it belongs
The file is known as the Windows Media Center Shell Service Object. It belongs to the Windows Media Center component found in older Windows Vista and Windows 7-era installations. Public Microsoft crash data identifies this path:

C:WindowsehomeehSSO.dll
It is not normally a file from:
- Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable
- DirectX
- .NET
- A graphics driver
- A general-purpose Windows runtime
- A particular game, unless that game is interacting with a legacy Media Center component
Microsoft documents Windows Media Center among the components removed or no longer supported beginning with Windows 10. See Microsoft’s list of deprecated and removed Windows components.
That distinction matters. On Windows 7 or Vista, repairing the original Windows component may restore the file. On Windows 10 or Windows 11, an old application that expects ehsso.dll may simply be incompatible with the current operating system.
Fix 1: Run Microsoft’s system-file repair tools
Use this first if the error appeared after an update, disk problem, system cleanup, antivirus action, or unexplained Windows corruption.
On Windows 10 or Windows 11
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. It may take several minutes.
- In the same administrator Command Prompt window, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and repeat the action that produced the ehsso.dll error.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker when Windows system files are missing or damaged. The supported procedure is documented in Microsoft’s System File Checker and DISM repair guide.
A successful result usually says that Windows Resource Protection found no integrity violations or repaired corrupted files. If the same error remains, continue instead of copying a replacement DLL.

Open an elevated Command Prompt as described above and run:

Restart after the scan. On these older systems, also install all available updates that apply to the installed Windows edition.
If SFC reports that it could not repair some files:

- Open File Explorer.
- Enter this path in the address bar:
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log
- Look for entries marked as unable to repair.
- If the file still cannot be restored, use System Restore or an in-place Windows repair rather than downloading ehsso.dll from a third-party file site.
Fix 2: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
An antivirus product may remove or quarantine a damaged or suspicious file. Do not restore it automatically. First confirm that the file is the expected Windows component and that its path is:
C:WindowsehomeehSSO.dll
In Windows Security:
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Select Windows Security.
- Open Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries related to
ehSSO.dll. - If the detection identifies the file as malicious, leave it quarantined and run a full scan.
- If the file is clearly the expected Microsoft component and the detection is a false positive, follow the security product’s documented restore process.

Check the file’s Properties → Digital Signatures tab when a copy exists. A missing signature, an unexpected publisher, or a copy located in a temporary folder should be treated cautiously. Do not allow a file merely because its name matches ehsso.dll.
Fix 3: Check the Media Center feature on Windows 7
This step applies to Windows 7 editions that include Windows Media Center, not to normal Windows 10 or Windows 11 installations.
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Select Turn Windows features on or off.
- Expand Media Features.
- Check Windows Media Center if it is available and unchecked.
- Select OK.
- Restart the computer.
If Media Center is already enabled, clear the checkbox, restart, enable it again, and restart once more. Then run sfc /scannow to check the component files.

Fix 4: Decide whether this is a crash, not a missing file
A crash report naming ehsso.dll does not prove that the file is absent. The file may exist but be corrupted or incompatible.
One documented Explorer event identifies:
Faulting application name: Explorer.EXE
Faulting module name: ehSSO.dll
Exception code: 0xc0000005
Faulting module path: C:WindowsehomeehSSO.dll
If Explorer crashes:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
eventvwr.msc. - Press Enter.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Find the error at the time of the crash.
- Confirm the faulting module path and application.
If the path is the expected C:WindowsehomeehSSO.dll, run DISM and SFC. If the path points to a user profile, temporary folder, game directory, or another unexpected location, do not replace it blindly. Scan the file and investigate the program that placed it there.

Fix 5: Use System Restore after a recent system change
System Restore is appropriate when ehsso.dll worked previously and the problem began after a driver, update, cleanup utility, or system configuration change.
- Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
- Open the result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Next, review the affected changes, and select Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore normally preserves personal files, but it can remove applications, updates, and settings installed after the selected restore point. Microsoft explains the process in its System Restore documentation.

If no restore point exists, use an in-place repair installation for the affected legacy Windows version or reinstall Windows after backing up personal data.
Fix 6: Do not treat drivers as the primary cause
A graphics or chipset driver does not normally provide ehsso.dll. Device Manager is useful only if the error began with broader display, audio, or hardware problems.
To check drivers:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, and any device category showing a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties → Driver.
- Review the driver provider and date.
- Use Update Driver only with a driver supplied through Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Avoid removing a working driver merely because an ehsso.dll message appears. Why regsvr32 ehsso.dll usually does not help
Do not routinely run:
regsvr32 ehsso.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. A runtime or component DLL may not provide that entry point, producing an error that the module was loaded but the entry point was not found.

Random DLL download sites can provide:
- Malware disguised as a familiar filename
- The wrong Windows build
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- A file with incorrect Microsoft metadata
- A replacement that hides the real servicing problem
Do not copy ehsso.dll into System32 or SysWOW64 simply because a download page instructs you to do so. Those folders are not interchangeable, and copying a file there can create version and servicing inconsistencies.
Use Windows servicing, System Restore, an original Windows installation source, or the official installer for the affected legacy application. There is no verified current Microsoft standalone download package for ehsso.dll.

Windows 10 and Windows 11: what the error usually means
Windows 10 and Windows 11 do not include the original supported Windows Media Center component. If an old application asks for ehsso.dll, determine whether it is:
- A legacy Windows Media Center-related program
- An unsupported Media Center modification
- A program left behind after an operating-system upgrade
- A suspicious application using the filename outside the Windows directory
The Media Feature Pack for Windows 10 or Windows 11 N editions restores certain media technologies, but it is not documented as a replacement for Windows Media Center or ehsso.dll. Installing it should not be expected to restore this component.
If DISM and SFC complete successfully but the application still requires ehsso.dll, use an older supported Windows environment for that legacy software or contact the application vendor for a compatible replacement. Do not force the file into a newer Windows installation.
Frequently asked questions
Is ehsso.dll a legitimate Windows file?
Yes, when it is the Windows Media Center Shell Service Object located under %WINDIR%ehome. A copy in another directory is not automatically malicious, but it requires verification.
Is ehsso.dll part of Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
No verified evidence identifies it as one of those runtimes. Repairing those packages is not a first-line solution.

Only if the game’s own official installer is verified to require the file. The available evidence identifies ehsso.dll with legacy Windows Media Center, not with games generally.
Will SFC always restore the file?
No. SFC depends on the Windows component store and the operating-system version. If it cannot repair the file, try DISM first on Windows 10 or Windows 11, then use System Restore or a repair installation.
What if the error appears after upgrading to Windows 10 or Windows 11?
Treat it as a legacy compatibility problem. Check the old program’s official support information, remove obsolete startup entries if appropriate, and use a supported replacement or older Windows environment rather than downloading ehsso.dll.
