One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchmsaddsr.dll is a legitimate Microsoft data-access component, and an error naming it does not automatically mean the file should be downloaded. The safest repair is to identify whether Windows or one older application is calling it, then repair that source instead of copying a replacement DLL.
What this file actually does
The description of msaddsr.dll is “OLE DB Data Shape Provider Resources.” It supplies resource support for the OLE DB Data Shape Provider, part of Microsoft’s older ADO and OLE DB data-access technologies.

The component belongs to Microsoft Data Access Components, known as MDAC, and its later Windows-integrated successor, Windows Data Access Components, or Windows DAC. Microsoft identifies MDAC 2.8 as the data-access stack included with Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. Windows Vista introduced Windows DAC 6.0, and later Windows versions service the relevant components through Windows itself. Microsoft’s Windows DAC overview

Protected copies can also exist in WinSxS or other Windows servicing locations. The file does not have to be in C:WindowsSystem32, and copying it there or into SysWOW64 is not a safe general fix.
An old database utility, Office or Access-dependent program, IIS application, SQL-related tool, or another legacy program may be the caller. The exact application depends on which software is installed and which component it loads.
Causes matched to the symptom
| What you see | Most likely explanation | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| Windows reports the file is missing in several programs | A Windows component is damaged or removed | Install updates, then run DISM and SFC |
| Only one old application fails | The application or its data provider is incomplete | Repair or reinstall that application |
| The problem began after antivirus activity | The file or a dependency may be quarantined | Check Windows Security Protection history |
| The file exists but will not load | A dependency, architecture, signature, or version may be wrong | Check the path and repair the owning installation |
| The error appeared after cleanup, an update, or disk trouble | Windows servicing damage is possible | Run Windows repair tools and check disk health |
| A 32-bit program fails on 64-bit Windows | The required 32-bit dependency chain may be absent | Repair the 32-bit application or provider |
Reported messages can include “msaddsr.dll was not found,” “msaddsr.dll is missing,” “Error loading msaddsr.dll,” or “The specified module could not be found.” Windows can name msaddsr.dll even when another dependency is the real missing module.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
Start with Windows Update because the component is serviced as part of Windows on modern systems.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not insist on doing so.
- Open the program that produced the error.
If the program still fails, continue with the repair commands below. Do not search for an isolated DLL before completing these steps.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Microsoft recommends running Deployment Image Servicing and Management, or DISM, before System File Checker. DISM repairs the Windows component store; SFC then checks and restores protected system files. Microsoft’s SFC and DISM instructions
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window while it is working.
- Run SFC separately:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application again.
A successful result may say that DISM completed the restore operation or that Windows Resource Protection found and repaired corrupt files. If SFC reports that it found no integrity violations, the Windows copy may already be healthy, and the application itself becomes the stronger suspect.
If DISM cannot find the repair files, use a matching Windows installation source according to Microsoft’s DISM image-repair guidance. The source must match the installed Windows edition and architecture. Do not use a random ISO or a different Windows build.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what needs attention, while repairs are performed by the full version; it is optional, and a program-specific reinstall remains the definitive fix when only one application is affected.
Fix 3: Repair or reinstall the application that reports the error
If only one program displays the message, do not assume Windows owns the broken copy. The application may have an incomplete installation, an outdated database provider, damaged permissions, or an application-local copy of the component.

First try the program’s own repair option:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the program again.
If there is no Repair button, use the application’s original installer and look for Repair, Modify, or Maintenance.
If repair does not work:
- Save the program’s settings and back up any databases it uses.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Download or obtain the installer from the original software publisher or your organization’s approved software source.
- Install the same architecture required by the application.
- Apply the program’s updates.
- Test it again.
If the error began after an interrupted update or failed uninstall, reinstalling the application is often more effective than replacing msaddsr.dll manually.
Fix 4: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
A legitimate filename is not enough to prove that a copy is safe. Conversely, a security product can sometimes quarantine a genuine component or one of its resources.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Open it and select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Inspect recent detections.
- Expand any item whose path points to the application or the Common Files data-access directory.
- Check the file path, detection name, and available signature information.
Restore a file only when its location, Microsoft signature, and installation source are clearly trustworthy. Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined file can cause Defender to detect it again. Microsoft Protection History
If the copy is in a temporary folder, Downloads, a user-writable folder, or beside an unrelated executable, do not restore it merely because it is named msaddsr.dll. Run a full Microsoft Defender scan and investigate the application that placed it there.
Fix 5: Verify the file path and digital signature
A file that exists may still be the wrong architecture, corrupted, unsigned, or copied from another Windows build.
To inspect it:
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to the path shown in the error.
- Right-click
msaddsr.dll. - Select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab, if present.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and that the signer is Microsoft.
Also check Details for the file description. A normal Microsoft component should identify itself as OLE DB Data Shape Provider Resources.
Do not treat a version number as a universal target. Historical MDAC builds differ, and a Windows 11 inventory has shown a newer Windows component version. A file copied from another computer can have incompatible servicing metadata, language resources, architecture, or dependencies.
Fix 6: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A 64-bit Windows installation can contain both 64-bit and 32-bit components. A 32-bit application needs the 32-bit dependency chain, while a 64-bit application needs the 64-bit chain.

System32andSysWOW64have counterintuitive names on 64-bit Windows.- Copying a DLL into both folders can make diagnosis harder and damage Windows servicing.
Check the affected program’s documentation or installer for its architecture. Then repair or reinstall that application and its provider using the matching installer.
If the failure followed a motherboard, storage, chipset, or other hardware change, install drivers only from the computer or hardware manufacturer. Windows Update can also provide suitable drivers through Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates.
Manually identifying outdated drivers can involve hunting through device names and matching versions. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues, while driver installation is performed by the full version; it is optional and does not replace repairing the application that calls msaddsr.dll.
Fix 7: Use System Restore after a known system change
If the error started immediately after an update, cleanup operation, failed installation, or driver change, System Restore may help when a suitable restore point exists.

Fix 8: Reinstall Windows without removing apps and files
On eligible Windows 11 systems, Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now can reinstall the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. The option may not appear on every installation.
Use it only after ordinary Windows Update, DISM, SFC, and application repair have failed. Read the screen carefully before confirming the repair.

Random DLL download sites cannot reliably tell you which architecture, build, language resource, or dependency chain your application requires. The downloaded file may also be modified, unsigned, or paired with malware. Even a genuine DLL may not fix the underlying missing dependency.

Why regsvr32 usually does not help
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. msaddsr.dll is a resource DLL, not a DLL you should normally register manually.
Running commands such as these at random can produce another error without repairing the missing component:
regsvr32 msaddsr.dll
regsvr32 C:PathTomsaddsr.dll
Microsoft documents registration failures when a DLL does not provide the required registration helper. Microsoft Regsvr32 documentation Use the application installer or Windows servicing tools instead.
FAQ
Is msaddsr.dll malware?
No, the Microsoft component itself is legitimate. A copy should still be checked by path, valid Microsoft signature, and provenance. A Microsoft-like filename in a temporary or user-writable folder deserves investigation.
Does `msaddsr.dll belong in System32?
Not necessarily. Common Files and WinSxS locations are important, and an application may use its own directory. Do not copy it blindly into System32 or SysWOW64.
Will Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET repair it?
Those are different runtime families. Do not install them as a presumed fix for this OLE DB data-access component.
What if the file exists but Windows says it cannot load it?
The named file may be present while a dependency is missing. The application may also be using the wrong architecture, a damaged copy, or an invalid installation. Repair the caller rather than replacing only the named file.
What should I provide when asking for support?
Include the full error text, the application name, whether other programs fail, the file path, Windows architecture, when the problem began, and whether updates, antivirus, cleanup, migration, or an uninstall happened beforehand. Do not upload a DLL from an unknown source.
