Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes is built for players who want a large recruitable cast, turn-based battles and a fantasy war story presented in the style of a classic console RPG. Critics largely welcomed that approach, but reviews also flagged uneven balance, bugs and a lack of modern conveniences. Whether it is worth playing depends on how much you value old-school structure over smoother, more consistent design.

What kind of game is Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes?

Developed by Rabbit & Bear Studios and published by 505 Games, Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes launched worldwide on April 23, 2024. Its story takes place in Allraan, where Nowa and imperial officer Seign Kesling meet as the Galdean Empire pursues an artifact that can amplify rune-lens magic. Their friendship is drawn into a wider war. That premise comes from the official PlayStation description, not a claim about how every part of the story plays out. PlayStation’s game description

The game’s defining pitch is its scale: the official description advertises over 100 playable characters to recruit and form into parties. Battles are turn-based, with terrain features such as height and obstacles affecting tactics. Rune-lenses provide magic, stat boosts, abilities and auto-skills, while story duels offer a different kind of encounter. These are official feature descriptions; “over 100” is not an independently audited count of characters a player can recruit. PlayStation’s game description

Why it looks and feels deliberately classic

Rabbit & Bear describes a mix of pixel-art characters and 3D environments, alongside battle events and town-building elements. The result is a contemporary production with a retro visual vocabulary, rather than a game that tries to disguise its old-school inspirations. The same studio’s Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising is a 2022 action-RPG prequel and prologue set in the same world; it is related, but distinct from this turn-based main game. #1 Best Overall
Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes - PlayStation 5
  • Fight thrilling & immersive turn-based battles that factor in the verticality & obstacles of dungeons when determining character and enemy placement. Take powerful bosses down a peg by caving in the ceiling or blasting them with devastating weapons.
  • Assemble your party from a range of fighters with diverse personal skills. Use their unique defensive commands to protect allies in the same row, counter incoming attacks, provoke foes, or charge up for your next strike.
  • Flex your strategic muscles in War Battles that pit commander against commander. Take control of legions of soldiers in dynamic, RTS-like scenarios where siege engines and other weapons of war could turn the tides.
  • Confront foes in dramatic, one-on-one Duels that are woven seamlessly into the story.
  • Customize party members with rune-lenses. The runes you place in the lenses will confer magic, personal abilities, stat boots, auto-skills, and other useful effects.

Is Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes worth playing?

The critical reception points to a strong fit for fans of ensemble-led, traditional JRPGs, but not an unconditional recommendation. Metacritic’s snapshot accessed on October 4, 2026 showed a 79/100 Metascore from 36 critic reviews, with 29 positive, seven mixed and no negative reviews in that snapshot. Its user score was 7.2/10 from 307 ratings. These are changing aggregator figures, not objective measures or guarantees of an individual player’s experience. Metacritic’s review page

Review excerpts illustrate the appeal: God is a Geek called it a “truly memorable experience,” and PC Gamer described a “joyous adventure.” Those are individual critics’ judgments, not a consensus on every element. The reservations matter too. GamingTrend’s excerpt identified war mode, balance and bugs as areas needing attention. Multiplayer.it praised the gameplay while warning that the shortage of modern quality-of-life features could put off newcomers. Taken together, the game’s strengths are its classic structure, cast and presentation; the risk is that rough edges and dated conveniences interrupt the adventure for players accustomed to more streamlined RPGs. Metacritic’s displayed review excerpts

Who is most likely to enjoy it?

  • A good fit: players drawn to large ensembles, party-building, turn-based combat and a fantasy conflict told through a broad cast.
  • A more cautious fit: players who prioritize polished balance, bug-free consistency or modern quality-of-life systems over retro design and scale.

There is no direct head-to-head comparison here that establishes it as better or worse than another JRPG. If you are weighing it against one, useful questions are how much you value a large recruitable cast, tactical positioning in turn-based battles, story and character appeal, convenience features, pacing and side activities. The official description supports the first three as advertised design elements; the cited reviews raise the latter concerns without establishing that every player will experience them the same way.
