These ten category-based recommendations are a shortlist by playstyle, not a tested damage ranking. A weapon category alone does not establish a best-in-slot pair, exact damage, or progression timing, so confirm each weapon’s stats, skills, and availability in your game before building around it.
How powerstancing works
Powerstancing, also called paired attacks or dual wielding, is a specific moveset: two armaments of the same type held in both hands let you swing both with a single paired-attack input. Simply equipping two different weapons does not guarantee that moveset. The default paired attack uses the left-hand attack input. See Eldenpedia’s paired-weapons reference for the category rule and documented exceptions.
There are unusual cases: Wakizashi is classified as a dagger but can pair with a Katana using the paired Katana moveset; two Wakizashis also use it. Pickaxe is classed as a Great Hammer yet shares the paired Greataxe moveset, including with another Pickaxe. Rellana’s Twin Blades have a distinctive single-slot paired state rather than behaving like an ordinary Straight Sword pair. These are exceptions, not a reason to assume any two weapons will pair.
Ten combinations to consider by playstyle
The categories below point to playstyles, not particular named weapon pairs: the available evidence does not establish current damage leaders or verify individual weapons’ attributes, skills, or acquisition points. Within a category, choose two weapons whose scaling, upgrade level, weight, and skill restrictions fit your build. The recommendations are framed for PvE experimentation unless a PvP caveat is called out.

1. Curved Swords — fast, multi-hit pressure
Why consider them: A paired Curved Sword setup suits players looking for quick, repeated attacks. Compare grounded and jumping attacks rather than assuming one input is always preferable.
Trade-off and build check: Repeated attacks can demand stamina and close distance. Match attributes and affinities to the weapons and build; do not infer current damage or status output from the category. Bandai Namco’s Version 1.09 notes report reduced power for dual-wielded jumping attacks, so avoid treating that attack as an automatic answer.
2. Straight Swords — adaptable paired moveset
Why consider them: Straight Swords are a reasonable starting point for a conventional category-matched pair when you want a paired moveset without committing to a specialized reach or weapon archetype.
Trade-off and build check: The category does not identify a strongest pair or guarantee broad access at a particular point in the game. Check individual weapon scaling, weight, and skills. Version 1.13’s recorded dual-wield poise-damage increase for Straight Swords is explicitly PvP-exclusive; it does not establish a PvE advantage. The patch-note archive reproduces those notes.

3. Spears — reach for measured engagements
Why consider them: Spears are a candidate for players who value reach and want to pressure opponents without relying on the shortest-range weapon classes.

Trade-off and build check: Compare recovery, stamina cost, and how comfortably the paired attacks turn in the situations you face. Version 1.13 lists a dual-wield poise-damage change for Spears under PvP-exclusive adjustments, so do not transfer that balance note to PvE. Bandai Namco’s Version 1.12 notes also distinguish PvP-only from general adjustments; check the applicable weapon class and current notes before using patch history to guide a dueling build.
4. Thrusting Swords — quick, thrust-focused attacks
Why consider them: This category is worth exploring if you want a paired setup centered on thrusting attacks and a quicker-feeling alternative to heavier weapons.
Trade-off and build check: Range, recovery, stamina use, and scaling vary by weapon. Version 1.13’s listed Thrusting Sword dual-wield poise adjustment is PvP-exclusive; it is not evidence of a PvE damage increase. For either mode, compare the actual weapons and avoid assuming a universal DPS result.

Why consider them: A Katana pair is a candidate for builds that want reach and are exploring status effects alongside paired attacks.
Trade-off and build check: Verify each weapon’s attributes, scaling, and status values; the category by itself does not guarantee a particular status result. The Wakizashi is a special case: despite being classified as a dagger, it can use the paired Katana moveset with a Katana. Version 1.13’s Katana dual-wield poise adjustment is labeled PvP-exclusive, not a general PvE performance finding.

6. Claws — rapid attacks at very close range
Why consider them: Claws are a candidate when close-range, rapid paired attacks suit your approach.
Trade-off and build check: Their short reach makes positioning important. Check the chosen weapons’ scaling, weight, and status behavior rather than assuming every Claw pair performs alike. Version 1.13 lists a Claw dual-wield poise change among PvP-exclusive adjustments; it should not be presented as a PvE benefit.

7. Fists — pressure from point-blank range
Why consider them: Fist weapons suit a deliberately close-range paired setup for players comfortable staying near their target.
Trade-off and build check: Their range limitation is central to the choice. Confirm the specific weapons’ availability, scaling, and skill constraints before planning a build around them. The Version 1.13 Fist dual-wield poise adjustment is PvP-exclusive, so it does not settle their PvE value.
8. Daggers — speed and mobility
Why consider them: Daggers are a candidate for players prioritizing quick attacks and mobility over reach.

Trade-off and build check: Short reach asks you to manage distance carefully. Check the individual daggers’ scaling and skills. Do not generalize the Wakizashi’s special paired Katana moveset to other daggers; it is a documented exception. The Version 1.13 dual-wield poise list does not name Daggers among the listed categories, and that list is not a complete measure of weapon performance.
9. Great Spears — reach with heavier commitment
Why consider them: Great Spears are a candidate if reach matters more to you than a quick, lightweight feel.
Trade-off and build check: Compare recovery, stamina demands, weight, and the attributes required by the actual weapons. Bandai Namco’s Version 1.12 notes include a general adjustment to turning speed for dual-wielded Heavy Thrusting Swords; that note is not a blanket Great Spear performance result. Check the notes for the exact weapon class and mode rather than treating the categories as interchangeable.
10. Twinblades — compare paired use with two-handing
Why consider them: Twinblades can be explored for hit-count- or status-oriented play, but paired attacks are not automatically the best way to use the category.
Trade-off and build check: The Twinblade reference describes a decent dual-wield moveset while emphasizing that the type is more focused on two-handed attacks, which can be multi-hit. It also records a historical reduction to dual-wielded Twinblade status buildup in version 1.07. Treat that as patch history, not a current performance percentage; compare the weapon one-handed in a pair with a two-handed setup using your own build and current game version. What to check before committing to a pair
- Category and paired moves: Confirm both weapons share a category, unless you are deliberately using a documented exception. Test the paired input rather than assuming two equipped weapons qualify.
- Reach and recovery: Longer reach can help with spacing, while attack recovery affects how safely you can follow up. Compare the actual moves, not just weapon names.
- Weight and stamina: Two weapons add equipment load and paired attacks use stamina. Make sure the setup still supports your preferred movement and attack rhythm.
- Attributes, scaling, and affinity: Check requirements and scaling on both weapons. An affinity or weapon that suits one hand may not suit the other equally well.
- Skills and acquisition: Verify skill restrictions, availability, and upgrade materials in your current playthrough. The category recommendations here do not establish exact progression timing.
- Game mode and patch: Separate PvE performance from PvP balance notes. Bandai Namco’s patch pages label PvP-only and general changes separately; later updates can supersede older adjustments.
How to read the balance notes
Patch history is useful context, not a current tier list. The archive’s App Ver. 1.13 notes, dated 29 July 2024, put listed dual-wield poise-damage increases for Straight Swords, Thrusting Swords, Curved Swords, Katanas, Spears, Whips, Fists, and Claws under PvP-exclusive adjustments. They do not establish those categories as stronger in PvE, nor rank specific weapon pairs.
Bandai Namco’s Version 1.12 notes separate PvP-only changes from general adjustments and include altered turning speed for dual-wielded Heavy Thrusting Swords. Its Version 1.09 notes report a decrease to the power of dual-wielded jumping attacks. Use those statements with their mode and version attached, and check the current official notes for your game version before treating any older change as current.
