The best Elden Ring staff depends on your attributes, upgrades, progression, and spells. Compare general-purpose and specialist options before choosing.

There is no single best staff for every Elden Ring sorcerer: the right choice depends on your Intelligence and Faith, upgrade investment, point in the game, and preferred sorcery family. This ranking weighs general usefulness and progression alongside specialist bonuses, so a staff lower on the list may still be the best fit for a focused build.

How this ranking works

This is a practical ranking, not a claim that one staff wins under every build or patch. General-purpose scaling and usefulness across a broad sorcery build matter most; availability during progression, upgrade potential, and passive bonuses for specific sorcery families also affect placement. A specialist staff can outperform a more versatile option when its bonus matches the spells you actually cast.

The item descriptions and placements below draw on Plarium’s staff guide, a secondary editorial source whose page title says 20 staffs and whose body covers a longer list. Its ordering is not an authoritative or independently tested ranking. The cited descriptions are useful for comparing roles, but exact stats and patch-sensitive performance are not asserted here.

The 15 best staffs in Elden Ring

1. Carian Regal Scepter

A strong late-game general-purpose choice for an Intelligence-focused sorcerer. It is tied to substantial Intelligence investment and has a bonus for Full Moon sorceries, making it especially attractive if your build can meet its requirements and you use that spell family. Its later-game role means it is not the practical answer for a new character.

  • MASSIVE OPEN WORLD

2. Academy Glintstone Staff

A broadly useful mid-game option for conventional Intelligence sorcery. Its appeal is versatility rather than a narrow spell-family bonus, so it is a sensible comparison point for players investing in Intelligence who want an upgradeable catalyst without building around a specialist effect. The Academy staff entry is also corroborated by Elden Ring Wiki.

3. Prince of Death’s Staff

A hybrid option for characters investing in both Intelligence and Faith. Its value is build-dependent: a pure-Intelligence sorcerer pays an opportunity cost by diverting attributes into Faith, while a genuine Intelligence/Faith build can make better use of that spread. See Eldenpedia’s item reference for the secondary item-level description.

4. Staff of Loss

A specialist pick for Night sorceries. Its family bonus can make it more valuable than a general catalyst for a character centered on those spells, but that advantage is less relevant if your spell selection is broad or focused elsewhere.

5. Carian Glintblade Staff

Best considered by players who lean on Glintblade sorceries. The family-specific bonus is the reason to choose it; compare the bonus against the flexibility of a general-purpose staff before committing to a narrow spell plan.

Elden Ring (PS5) (European Version)
  • Collaborating with George R.R. Martin to create the ELDEN RING mythos has been a genuinely delightful experience and a source of wonderful inspiration. The team is working hard to ensure that the world of ELDEN RING will be a fascinating place for players to explore, filled with peril and wonder from its furthest reaches to its lowest depths. This is a FromSoftware title through and through, rich in fantasy and RPG action. We sincerely hope you look forward to it.
  • Building the world of ELDEN RING with Miyazaki-san and his team was a treat! The graphics, mythos, and action-RPG gameplay will deliver an unforgettable experience. I can’t wait for people to see what ELDEN RING has in store for them.” Said George R.R. Martin.

6. Carian Glintstone Staff

A themed option for Carian sword sorceries. It suits a build that regularly uses that family, but its specialization is a weaker reason to choose it if those spells are only occasional parts of your rotation.

7. Meteorite Staff

A useful early-game Intelligence option, particularly for a character using Gravity sorceries. Its key limitation is that it cannot be upgraded, so its early accessibility does not make it a permanent answer as other staffs gain value through upgrades. Treat it as a progression tool rather than assuming its early strength settles the late-game comparison.

8. Lusat’s Glintstone Staff

A candidate for a high-investment Intelligence build that prioritizes sorcery output over efficiency. Check its current in-game cost and scaling before choosing it; those details can affect whether its trade-off makes sense for your build and patch.

9. Azur’s Glintstone Staff

A specialized choice for players who value faster spellcasting and can accommodate its trade-offs. It is not automatically superior to a staff with stronger general scaling: the casting benefit matters most when it changes how you play or avoid incoming attacks.

  • A New Fantasy World – Journey through the Lands Between, a new fantasy world created by Hidetaka Miyazaki, creator of the influential Dark Souls video game series, and George R. R. Martin, author of The New York Times best-selling fantasy series, A Song of Ice and Fire. Unravel the mysteries of the Elden Ring’s power. Encounter adversaries with profound backgrounds, characters with their own unique motivations for helping or hindering your progress, and fearsome creatures
  • World Exploration in the Lands Between – Elden Ring features vast fantastical landscapes and shadowy, complex dungeons that are connected seamlessly. Traverse the breathtaking world on foot or on horseback, alone or online with other players, and fully immerse yourself in the grassy plains, suffocating swamps, spiraling mountains, foreboding castles and other sites of grandeur on a scale never seen before in a FromSoftware title
  • Genre-Defining Gameplay – Create your character in FromSoftware’s refined action-RPG and define your playstyle by experimenting with a wide variety of weapons, magical abilities, and skills found throughout the world. Charge into battle, pick off enemies one-by-one using stealth, or even call upon allies for aid. Many options are at your disposal as you decide how to approach exploration and combat

10. Carian Glintstone Staff

For an Intelligence-focused character seeking a broadly accessible Carian-themed staff, this is a reasonable alternative to the more focused Glintblade option. Compare its current passive and scaling with your spell list rather than selecting by name alone.

11. Gelmir Glintstone Staff

A niche choice for a build that uses both sorcery and the relevant fire-oriented spell options. The narrower use case makes it less compelling as a default staff for a character whose attributes and spell slots are committed to standard Intelligence sorcery.

12. Staff of the Guilty

A Faith-oriented staff with a more specialized audience than standard Intelligence catalysts. It belongs on the shortlist only if its attribute demands and spell interactions fit the character you are actually building.

13. Albinauric Staff

A hybrid-stat option suited to builds that invest in Arcane alongside the attributes needed for sorcery. As with Prince of Death’s Staff, its potential should be weighed against the cost of spreading attributes rather than treated as a universal upgrade.

14. Rotten Crystal Staff

A specialist catalyst to consider when its passive effect supports the spells you use. Its appeal is less broad than that of a general Intelligence staff, so verify the current effect and requirements before making it the center of a build.

15. Staff of the Avatar

A lower-priority option for a staff-focused sorcerer unless its requirements and scaling match a particular character plan. It rounds out a broad comparison, but a niche fit is not a reason to spend attributes or upgrades that would better serve your main staff.

Choose by build and point in the game

  • Early-game Intelligence: Meteorite Staff is described as an accessible early option with a Gravity-sorcery bonus, but it cannot be upgraded.
  • Mid-game general sorcery: Academy Glintstone Staff is a broadly useful option to assess as your Intelligence investment and upgrades develop.
  • Late-game Intelligence: Compare Carian Regal Scepter with other upgradeable options using your actual attribute investment and spell choices.
  • Focused spell families: Staff of Loss, Carian Glintblade Staff, and Carian Glintstone Staff are examples where a passive bonus can matter more than a general-purpose ranking.
  • Hybrid attributes: Consider Prince of Death’s Staff only if Intelligence and Faith both belong in your build; the same principle applies to other hybrid-stat choices.

Where is the best staff in Elden Ring located?

There is no one location that answers this for every character, because “best” changes with build and progression. The source guide reports item locations alongside descriptions, but this ranking does not reproduce route directions or exact coordinates. Before following a location guide, confirm it matches the current game version and the specific staff you have chosen.

How to make the final choice

  1. Check the staff’s attribute requirements against your current build and planned level investment.
  2. Decide whether you need a broad-purpose catalyst or a passive bonus for a spell family you cast often.
  3. Factor in progression: an available early option may be useful now, while an upgradeable staff can become more attractive with investment.
  4. Compare your alternatives in the current game rather than relying on an ordinal list alone; patch-sensitive scaling and effects can change the result.
