What makes a weapon good for an Intelligence build?
Intelligence scaling means that raising Intelligence can increase a weapon’s effectiveness through its scaling value. It does not mean Intelligence is necessarily the weapon’s best damage stat, nor does a letter grade tell you how much damage you will deal. Grades summarize ranges of underlying values; actual results also depend on base damage, exact scaling, upgrades, affinity, and your other attributes. The community-maintained Eldenpedia scaling reference explains these mechanics, but it is not an official ranking or developer source.

- Scaling at your upgrade level: Check the weapon’s current panel, including its affinity. Do not carry a starting grade over to a fully upgraded weapon or assume every affinity behaves the same way.
- Attribute requirements: Strength and Dexterity requirements determine the investment needed to wield a weapon; a minimum Intelligence requirement does not establish that Intelligence is its strongest damage stat. The Intelligence reference lists requirements but does not rank weapons by damage.
- Damage profile: Consider whether damage is split between physical and magic, and whether the weapon or skill adds another type or status effect. An impressive scaling letter alone cannot settle the comparison.
- Skill utility and cost: Compare range, practical use, FP consumption, and how the skill benefits from Intelligence. A strong ranged option may be valuable for reasons beyond ordinary attacks.
- Weapon role and reach: A katana and a greatsword differ in speed, reach, and attack rhythm. Choose for the situations and moveset you want, not just the stat label.
- Availability and upgrading: Note when the weapon becomes obtainable and whether its upgrade path fits your resources and progress.
- Enemy defenses: If a weapon or skill leans heavily on magic damage, consider a physical alternative for enemies that resist magic.

The available weapon-specific guides support a focused comparison of Moonveil and Dark Moon Greatsword. Their listed details come from fan-made guides, not official developer documentation, so check the current in-game weapon panel and requirements before committing your build.

The evidence here does not establish that either weapon is universally stronger. Moonveil’s ranged skill, bleed, and hybrid Dexterity/Intelligence demands make it a different proposition from the greatsword’s projectile and frostbite approach.

Carian Sorcery Sword: account for the August 2026 patch
Carian Sorcery Sword is particularly patch-sensitive. Bandai Namco’s official Elden Ring Patch Notes Version 1.17, dated August 27, 2026, state under its balance adjustment: “Changed Intelligence scaling so that it now increases the attack power of all damage types.” The note applies to Carian Sorcery Sword. The update lists PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam, and gives App Ver. and Regulation Ver. 1.17 after applying the update.
That change makes older comparisons based on the sword’s Intelligence scaling potentially outdated, but it does not by itself show that the sword ranks above other weapons or provide a complete build comparison. Earlier official notes document the change history: version 1.12.3 on July 3, 2024, increased its Intelligence scaling while slightly decreasing base damage. version 1.09 also documented changes to scaling when infusing weapons with certain Ashes of War and increases to attribute scaling for several weapon types.

How to find and compare Intelligence-scaling weapons
- Start with the weapon’s attribute panel. Check its Intelligence scaling and Strength and Dexterity requirements in your own game. The Intelligence reference can help identify requirements, but a requirement alone is not proof of an Intelligence-focused damage role.
- Compare like with like. Use the same upgrade level and affinity when assessing two weapons. Upgrades can raise scaling values, while affinities can change both base damage and scaling.
- Inspect the full damage and status profile. Account for physical and magic damage together, plus any status buildup. Do not rank weapons by scaling letter alone.
- Test the skill as part of the build. Look at its range and FP use, and assess what it contributes beyond regular attacks. A skill can shape a weapon’s usefulness even when its basic damage is not the only consideration.
- Match the weapon to your stat budget and progression. Include minimum Strength, Dexterity, and Intelligence requirements, then consider when you can obtain it and what its upgrade path asks of you.
- Keep an alternative for resistant enemies. The Moonveil and Dark Moon Greatsword guides advise using a physical option against Radagon and Elden Beast. That is useful matchup guidance, not a calculation that applies identically to every character or setup.
For current patch-sensitive choices, check the version shown by the game rather than relying on an older build page. Version 1.17 is the latest update established by the cited official notes here; a later update would require rechecking its weapon adjustments.
