For PvE, Urumi is the strongest all-round pick if your build can use its Dexterity scaling; Magma Whip Candlestick is a compelling alternative for a fire-focused build. This ranking weighs listed damage type, requirements, innate effects, skill, weight, and acquisition—not just the biggest attack number. It assumes a general PvE perspective rather than a specific optimized build, and it is not a claim of fresh balance testing.
There are seven base-game whips: Whip, Thorned Whip, Urumi, Hoslow’s Petal Whip, Tooth Whip, Magma Whip Candlestick, and Giant’s Red Braid. A Patch 1.16 PvE video ranking published October 23, 2024 put Urumi first and the basic Whip last; the order below is an independent practical assessment, not a universal PvP or current-meta verdict.
All seven Elden Ring whips ranked for PvE
The listed attack values below are weapon-reference base stats, not a direct measure of damage after upgrades, attributes, enemy defenses, or buffs. Split physical/fire attack is not directly comparable to the same-sized physical-only figure. The Fextralife whip comparison reports the base attack values; exact patch-level stats may vary.
-
Urumi — best general-purpose Dexterity option
Urumi is the strongest all-round choice here for a Dexterity-oriented PvE character: it is listed with 101 physical attack and a 19 Dexterity requirement, and it has a distinctive charged heavy attack that can extend its reach. Its standard skill is Kick, which is situational utility rather than a damage-focused weapon skill. It uses Smithing Stones. The listed values and skill are from a secondary reference; confirm in-game if exact patch-level precision matters.

-
Magma Whip Candlestick — best fire-focused option
Its listed base attack is 72 physical plus 72 fire. The split gives it a different damage profile from the physical-only whips, so the combined number does not guarantee more damage against every enemy. Its Flame Dance skill gives it an area-focused fire attack, making it attractive when that moveset and fire damage suit your build. It uses Somber Smithing Stones. The listed comparison does not establish a universally superior attribute setup or performance against particular defenses.
-
Tooth Whip — a strong physical choice with an unusual status profile
The listed physical attack is 109, among the higher physical-only base figures in the group. It uses Somber Smithing Stones. Its attack value alone does not establish its practical damage ceiling, and the available comparison does not provide enough detail here to rank it above the more build-defining options.
-
Hoslow’s Petal Whip — best pick if you want innate bleed
Hoslow’s Petal Whip has listed physical attack of 110, Strike damage, innate blood-loss buildup of 55, weight 3.5, and requirements of 10 Strength and 20 Dexterity. It uses Smithing Stones and has the Kick skill. Bleed makes it the clearest choice when you specifically want a whip with innate blood-loss buildup, though an enemy’s resistance and your build affect how useful that is.

ELDEN RING Tarnished Edition | Digital | Nintendo Switch 2 Digital Code- ELDEN RING Tarnished Edition
-
Thorned Whip — solid physical damage, without a standout listed advantage
Its listed physical attack is 102, and it uses Smithing Stones. That puts its base figure close to Urumi’s, but the comparison alone does not establish that it will outperform Urumi on a particular build. Choose it when its acquisition and weapon fit your character; the supplied stat summary does not establish a unique skill or effect that would make it the default recommendation.

Giant’s Red Braid — a late, split-damage Strength/Dexterity/Faith choice
It lists 82 physical and 53 fire attack, weighs 2.5, and requires 18 Strength, 12 Dexterity, and 21 Faith. Its Flame Dance skill and mixed damage make it a specialized option rather than a simple upgrade over physical-only whips. It uses Somber Smithing Stones. You obtain it from Finger Reader Enia by trading the Fire Giant’s Remembrance, earned by defeating the Fire Giant, so it is gated behind a major late-game boss.
-
Whip — accessible baseline, but the least compelling specialized choice
The basic Whip lists 100 physical attack and uses Smithing Stones. It is a straightforward physical option, but the other entries offer stronger listed base attack, innate bleed, split fire damage, or a more distinctive fit for a specialized build. It remains viable if you prefer its availability or moveset; the ranking does not mean it cannot complete PvE content.

How this ranking differs from the Patch 1.16 video order
Youwy’s video, published October 23, 2024 and labeled Patch 1.16, is explicitly PvE-only. It ranks Urumi, Magma Whip Candlestick, Tooth Whip, Hoslow’s Petal Whip, Thorned Whip, Giant’s Red Braid, and Whip, in that order. That is a creator’s attributed ranking, not proof that each position is optimal for every build or encounter. The ordering above keeps Urumi first and Whip last, while treating the middle choices as dependent on build purpose: innate bleed, fire damage, or late-game mixed scaling can change which one is best for an individual character. No fresh balance test is implied.
Pick by build and progression, not by base attack alone
| Need or constraint | Best fit from this list | Why |
|---|---|---|
| General PvE, Dexterity-leaning | Urumi | It is the top-ranked general-purpose choice here, with a listed 19 Dexterity requirement and a distinctive heavy attack. |
| Innate blood-loss buildup | Hoslow’s Petal Whip | Its listed innate buildup is 55; it requires 20 Dexterity. |
| Fire-oriented setup | Magma Whip Candlestick or Giant’s Red Braid | Both have listed physical and fire attack. Giant’s Red Braid also requires Faith and is gated behind the Fire Giant. |
| Want a high listed physical-only base value | Hoslow’s Petal Whip or Tooth Whip | The cited comparison lists 110 physical for Hoslow’s and 109 for Tooth Whip; this is not a post-upgrade damage comparison. |
| Smithing-stone upgrade path | Whip, Thorned Whip, Urumi, Hoslow’s Petal Whip | These four use Smithing Stones. |
| Somber upgrade path | Tooth Whip, Magma Whip Candlestick, Giant’s Red Braid | These three use Somber Smithing Stones. |
Weapon upgrade materials are listed in the Smithing Stones reference and weapon pages. Use the material path that fits your upgrade inventory, but do not treat it as a measure of weapon strength.
Where the standout whips come from
Hoslow’s Petal Whip
The cited item reference lists two routes: defeat Juno Hoslow in the Mountaintops of the Giants after the final Tanith contract, or receive it at the end of Diallos’s questline. Both are progression-dependent, so the better route depends on which NPC quest path you have followed. See Hoslow’s Petal Whip.

Giant’s Red Braid
Defeat the Fire Giant to earn the Fire Giant’s Remembrance, then trade that Remembrance to Finger Reader Enia for the weapon. Its requirements—18 Strength, 12 Dexterity, and 21 Faith—make it a deliberate build commitment, not a universally convenient late-game replacement. See Giant’s Red Braid.
Does the ranking apply to PvP?
No: the placement is a PvE recommendation. Whip choice in PvP also depends on reach, timing, opponent behavior, matchup, and the moves you can reliably land. The cited Patch 1.16 video explicitly limits its ranking to PvE, and the listed base attack values do not establish a PvP tier list. Treat the order as a starting point for PvE build selection, not a universal ranking across modes.
