For an Intelligence-focused build, Dark Moon Greatsword is the best all-around magic-damage pick, followed by Wing of Astel and Moonveil. That order weighs each weapon’s melee damage options, magic attacks, skill, status utility, and handling—not a controlled DPS test. The best choice for you can change with your stats, upgrades, enemy defenses, and preferred moveset.
How this ranking works
“Magic damage” can mean three different things in Elden Ring: innate magic attack power on a weapon, the Magic affinity applied to a compatible weapon, or a weapon skill that deals magic damage. They are related, but not interchangeable. Magic affinity adds magic attack power and Intelligence scaling, generally at the cost of some other attack power and scaling (Fextralife’s affinity reference).
Intelligence contributes to damage when a weapon has Intelligence scaling, but final damage depends on the weapon, its upgrade level, affinity, attributes, and the attack used (Intelligence; weapon scaling and stats). The ranking below is a mechanics-based recommendation for an Intelligence build that meets each weapon’s requirements. It is not a claim that one weapon wins every matchup or has the highest damage per second.
1. Dark Moon Greatsword: best all-around option
Dark Moon Greatsword earns the top spot because it combines physical and magic attack power with Intelligence scaling, frost buildup, and a skill that adds ranged pressure to its heavy attacks. It suits players who want one weapon to cover both close-range swings and magic projectiles.

Why it ranks first
- More than one damage route: it can deal damage with ordinary melee attacks as well as the magic projectile enabled by its weapon skill.
- Frost utility: its attacks build frost, giving it a status effect in addition to its physical and magic damage.
- Skill-enhanced heavy attacks: activating Moonlight Greatsword empowers the weapon and lets heavy attacks launch a magic wave. This adds ranged reach without requiring a separate spell.
What to know before choosing it
The weapon uses Somber Smithing Stones, and its affinity cannot be changed with Ashes of War. The reference entry lists C Intelligence scaling in its base table, but that alone does not establish its upgraded attack rating or damage against a particular enemy (Dark Moon Greatsword weapon entry). Choose it for its combination of melee, frost, and skill-enabled projectiles—not because a base-table figure proves it outdamages every alternative.
2. Wing of Astel: best for curved-sword handling and skill bursts
Wing of Astel is the strongest alternative for players who prefer a curved sword and want magic attacks built into both its skill and strong attacks. Its Nebula skill creates magic bursts, while its strong attack releases a wave of enchanted light (Wing of Astel weapon entry).

Why it ranks second
- Distinct attack options: the light wave on strong attacks provides ranged pressure, while Nebula adds an area-damage skill.
- Close-range potential: Nebula’s explosions can cluster when used at close range or in confined spaces, creating a useful niche for players who can make openings for the skill.
- Different feel from a greatsword: its curved-sword moveset is a natural fit if you value quicker handling over the Dark Moon Greatsword’s broader toolkit.
Its position is a preference-based ranking, not evidence that Wing of Astel has the highest damage. How much it contributes depends on whether you use its skill, its strong attacks, or ordinary melee hits—and on the target and build.
3. Moonveil: best katana option
Moonveil is the pick for an Intelligence build that wants a katana moveset and a weapon skill with ranged reach. It has magic damage and Intelligence scaling, and its Transient Moonlight skill delivers its own skill-based attack profile (Moonveil weapon entry).

Why it ranks third
- Katana moveset: choose it if that weapon class fits your preferred pace and attack patterns better than a greatsword or curved sword.
- Skill-based reach: Transient Moonlight gives the weapon a ranged slash option alongside its melee attacks.
- A distinct trade-off: Moonveil is compelling for its speed and skill, but those strengths do not establish that it universally outdamages the other two weapons.

For the broadest mix of melee and ranged options, start with Dark Moon Greatsword. Prefer a curved sword and a burst skill? Choose Wing of Astel. Prefer a katana and its moveset? Choose Moonveil. Your own result depends on your attributes, weapon upgrades, buffs, the enemy’s defenses, and which attacks you use.

A weapon’s displayed attack power is not a complete answer to which one deals the most damage in practice. A fair comparison would need to hold the patch, weapon upgrade level, attributes, buffs, target defenses, and attack sequence constant. Without those shared conditions, a claim that one of these weapons is definitively the “highest damage Intelligence weapon” would overstate what the available weapon descriptions establish.
