Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends Complete Edition is a substantial, content-rich entry for players who enjoy the series’ large-scale Musou battles. Its extra story material, modes, characters, and weapons give returning fans plenty to do, but the familiar combat loop can feel repetitive if the basic Dynasty Warriors formula is already wearing thin. Reviews were mixed-to-positive overall, with critic and player scores varying by platform and review population.
What reviewers thought
On PlayStation 4, Metacritic lists a 69 Metascore from 30 critic reviews published in 2014: 12 positive, 18 mixed, and none negative. This reflects that PS4 critic cohort, not a current cross-platform consensus. The PC picture on Steam is different: at access in 2026, 80% of 3,587 English user reviews were positive, while 84% of 25 recent reviews were positive. Steam user-review figures change over time, and the recent figure is a small snapshot.
Individual PS4 reviews show why reactions differ. Digitally Downloaded rated the game 90 and praised the scale of its content, writing, “The sheer weight of content that is packed into the game can’t be understated.” The Escapist gave it 80, calling it “a great way to reincentivize the most enjoyable Warriors game since DW3.” ZTGD also scored it 80, while noting that the gameplay can be mindless at times. Destructoid’s 75-point review suggested it could suit someone returning after a long break, while cautioning that it may not offer anything mind-blowing to casual fans.
What Complete Edition adds
Koei Tecmo describes Xtreme Legends as expanding Dynasty Warriors 8 with a Lu Bu story, hypothetical scenarios for existing battles, additional playable characters and weapon types, a revamped Ambition Mode, and Challenge Mode. The official manual explains how its four modes work:

Steam also lists downloadable content separately. The Complete Edition name alone is not evidence that every optional DLC pack is included; check the specific platform and edition listing for its contents.
Is the gameplay a good fit?
The central appeal is the established Warriors rhythm: take a chosen officer into crowded battlefields, fight through large groups of enemies, and advance through stage objectives. Xtreme Legends adds breadth around that familiar foundation rather than replacing it with a fundamentally different combat system. The critics who praised the package emphasized its volume and the appeal of returning to a strong series entry; the reservations focused on repetitive or mindless play.
- Likely to suit: players who enjoy Dynasty Warriors-style battles, want several campaigns and replay options, or appreciate building up officers and a camp across multiple modes.
- May not suit: players who already find the series’ combat repetitive, or newcomers expecting the added content to transform the core formula.
Platforms, controls, and co-op
The researched Steam listing gives a PC release date of May 13, 2014, and documents single-player as well as shared/split-screen co-op. It lists six supported language options. The official manual includes PC gamepad support alongside keyboard controls and co-op instructions, but does not recommend a particular controller.
Available sources do not establish a complete, current technical comparison across PS3, PS4, Vita, PC, and later releases. Do not assume resolution, frame rate, performance, or platform-specific content is identical. For a purchase, compare the exact platform listing, included base-game and Xtreme Legends content, co-op needs, and your tolerance for the series’ familiar combat loop.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsReview verdict
The reviews point to a generous expansion for fans of the formula, not a universal fix for what some players find repetitive about Dynasty Warriors. Its extra campaigns, hypothetical routes, modes, characters, and weapons are the strongest reasons to choose it. The PS4 critic reception was mixed-to-positive, while Steam’s user snapshot was more favorable; those scores describe different platforms and audiences.
