Elden Ring: Best Offhand Weapons, Ranked by Role

The best Elden Ring offhand depends on the job: parry with a Parrying Dagger, block with a small shield, use Misericorde for critical follow-ups, or pair compatible weapons for dual attacks.

There is no single best offhand weapon in Elden Ring: the right choice depends on whether you want to parry, add fast attacks, land critical hits, block, or access a weapon skill. For a practical ranking, prioritize the Parrying Dagger for parry-focused play, a small shield for blocking and guard counters, and the Misericorde as a critical follow-up. If you want paired attacks, choose a second weapon that actually works with your main-hand weapon’s class.

How to choose an offhand weapon

“Offhand” can mean three different things: a left-hand weapon you use for its own attacks, a weapon that enables paired attacks, or a shield used for defense. Those jobs are not interchangeable. Your weapon classes, which hand holds each armament, build attributes, PvE or PvP context, and comfort with parrying all affect the best choice.

  • Parry: Choose a parry tool if you want to interrupt eligible enemy attacks and create an opening.
  • Complementary attacks: Choose a second weapon when you want to attack with both hands’ armaments. The paired moveset depends on weapon category and hand placement; simply equipping any two weapons does not guarantee paired attacks. See Elden Ring Wiki’s explanation of paired weapons.
  • Critical follow-up: A dagger can be a dedicated option for a critical hit after a parry or stance break, rather than a weapon you regularly swing alongside your main-hand weapon.
  • Guard utility: A shield offers blocking and guard-counter options, a different play pattern from relying on parries.
  • Skill access: An offhand weapon can be selected for its skill, but which skill you can use depends on your equipped armaments and hand setup.

Check the attribute requirements and scaling on the in-game item screen for your build. The available sources do not establish a reliable, current stat comparison across these candidates, so the ranking below is by use case rather than damage numbers.

Best offhand choices, ranked by role

1. Parrying Dagger — best for a dedicated parry tool

The Parrying Dagger is the most direct pick when your offhand’s job is to parry. It suits players who deliberately look for parry openings and want a weapon rather than a shield in that hand. Its value depends on your ability and willingness to parry; it is not automatically the best choice for someone who would rather block or attack.

#1 Best Overall
ELDEN RING: Tarnished Edition - Nintendo Switch 2
  • ELDEN RING Tarnished Edition contains the Elden Ring Base Game + Shadow of the Erdtree Expansion + Additional Content (including Torrent Skins, New Armors, and More...)
  • MASSIVE OPEN WORLD
  • DEEP, CUSTOMIZABLE COMBAT
  • NEW STARTING CLASSES
  • NEW PLAYER-FRIENDLY ENHANCEMENTS

The weapon’s comparison with small shields is covered on the Parrying Dagger reference page. Treat that as a comparison of parry tools, not evidence that the dagger is superior for every build or encounter.

2. A small shield, such as the Buckler — best for defensive flexibility

Pick a small shield if you want a shield-based approach to parrying, or if blocking and guard counters are part of your plan. A guard counter is a different combat tool from a critical hit: the former follows a guarded attack, while a critical is a special punish opportunity. The combat mechanics guide discusses both, as well as critical hits.

This is the better fit when you want shield utility rather than an offhand weapon for routine attacks. The available comparison does not establish a universal winner between the Buckler, other small shields, and the Parrying Dagger; choose based on the actions you intend to use.

  • Collaborating with George R.R. Martin to create the ELDEN RING mythos has been a genuinely delightful experience and a source of wonderful inspiration. The team is working hard to ensure that the world of ELDEN RING will be a fascinating place for players to explore, filled with peril and wonder from its furthest reaches to its lowest depths. This is a FromSoftware title through and through, rich in fantasy and RPG action. We sincerely hope you look forward to it.
  • Building the world of ELDEN RING with Miyazaki-san and his team was a treat! The graphics, mythos, and action-RPG gameplay will deliver an unforgettable experience. I can’t wait for people to see what ELDEN RING has in store for them.” Said George R.R. Martin.

3. Misericorde — best as a critical follow-up

Use the Misericorde as a purpose-built critical follow-up option if your combat plan creates openings through parries or stance breaks. That role is narrower than a complementary attack weapon: it is for capitalizing on an opening, not necessarily for contributing a distinct offhand attack pattern throughout a fight.

The independent combat guide discusses dagger critical multipliers and Misericorde, but it is fan-made rather than an official stat reference. Check the current in-game item details before making a build around specific numbers.

4. A second weapon in a compatible category — best for paired attacks

If your goal is to attack with both weapons as a pair, choose a second armament whose category and hand placement produce the paired moves you want. The mechanics are conditional, not universal: two equipped weapons do not necessarily become a paired moveset. Confirm the result with your actual loadout rather than assuming that any offhand will complement your main-hand weapon.

Charge into battle, pick off enemies one-by-one using stealth, or even call upon allies for aid. Many options are at your disposal as you decide how to approach exploration and combat

This option is most relevant when paired attacks are the point of the build. If you want a parry, critical follow-up, shield, or utility skill instead, a second weapon for paired attacks may be the wrong tool.

5. A weapon chosen for its skill — best for utility or skill access

An offhand weapon can be selected to provide a weapon skill you want available. This is a utility choice rather than a general recommendation for damage: the useful pick depends on the skill, your hand arrangement, and whether that access fits your build. The available sources do not establish a single best offhand skill weapon or a complete list of skill interactions, so verify the behavior with your chosen equipment.

How build and combat context change the ranking

For PvE

Choose around the problems you want to solve: parry an enemy, block and counter, create paired attacks, or exploit a critical opening. A tool that works well for one of those jobs does not replace the others. Check your requirements and scaling against your actual attributes before committing.

For PvP

Do not assume player-versus-player balance changes describe PvE performance. Bandai Namco’s version 1.13 notes, dated 2024-07-29, label several dual-wield poise-damage changes as “PvP-exclusive balance adjustments.” Those notes list PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam as target platforms. They establish that the listed changes were PvP-specific, not which offhand weapon is best overall. Read Bandai Namco’s version 1.13 notes.

For status-focused dual wielding

Status buildup has also received balance changes. Bandai Namco’s version 1.07 patch notes, dated 2022-10-13, state: “Decreased the status buildup done by dual wielded weapons.” This is a historical patch change; it does not establish the exact buildup values in the current game. Read Bandai Namco’s version 1.07 notes.

A quick decision guide

  1. Want to parry? Start with the Parrying Dagger or compare it with a small shield, then choose the tool whose use fits your preferred play style.
  2. Want to block and counter? Use a shield and build around guard-counter opportunities rather than treating it as a paired attack weapon.
  3. Want stronger critical follow-up? Consider the Misericorde for openings created by parries or stance breaks.
  4. Want attacks from both weapons? Match weapon categories and test the hand arrangement to confirm the paired moveset.
  5. Want a skill available from your offhand? Choose around that skill, then check how your equipped hands affect access.
  6. Before investing in a choice, confirm the item’s attribute requirements, scaling, and behavior in your current build and game version.
