There is no single best Elden Ring PvE build for every player or enemy. The right choice depends on whether you want melee pressure or ranged attacks, how much FP and setup you can manage, the boss’s resistances, and whether you own Shadow of the Erdtree. This guide reflects the latest official update identified here, patch 1.17, dated August 27, 2026; use the archetypes below as a way to choose, not as a measured damage ranking.
What “best” means in PvE
A build that clears one boss quickly may be awkward against another. Compare builds by the factors that affect your play and the encounter:

- Range and exposure: ranged magic can let you attack from a distance, while close-range weapons require more time in danger.
- Resource demand: spells consume FP; weapon skills and attacks may also compete for FP or stamina. Consider how often you can attack before needing to recover or replenish.
- Setup and execution: a strategy that depends on a cast, a follow-up projectile, or a particular equipment bonus may be harder to use under pressure than a direct attack.
- Survivability: damage is only one part of a practical PvE build. Account for how reliably you can avoid hits, block, and stay alive while attacking.
- Access and resistance: separate base-game options from DLC-dependent ones, and adjust when an enemy resists your damage type.
These are decision criteria, not a scientific ranking. No named, dated dataset in the available sources establishes PvE build popularity, win rates, or comparative damage superiority.

The current official patch notes establish changes to selected equipment and spells, but the available detailed build guide covers magic rather than a full, current comparison of melee builds. The table therefore describes practical archetypes, not verified stat spreads or tier placements.

Magic examples—and the limits of older rankings
Windows Central’s August 4, 2025 guide discusses spells in the version 1.16 game and ranks them from S to F using factors including efficiency, FP cost, ease of use, and PvP viability. For PvE, treat that as dated editorial guidance: survivability, range, setup time, boss resistance, and DLC access also affect whether a spell is a good fit, and the guide does not establish its rankings for patch 1.17.
Impenetrable Thorns
The 2025 guide reports a requirement of 24 Faith and a cost of 15 FP, and places the spell in Shadow Keep. It also discusses Arcane-scaling staves and thorn-boosting equipment. Verify the current in-game requirement, location, and equipment interaction before planning around this spell. Shadow Keep is in the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, so this option is DLC-dependent.

Knight’s Lightning Spear
The same guide describes follow-up projectiles and equipment bonuses for Knight’s Lightning Spear. Treat those details as a lead for in-game checking, not proof that the spell is a top PvE choice after patch 1.17.

Version 1.16.1, dated August 21, 2025, was identified by Bandai Namco as a bug-fix update, so a guide explicitly based on version 1.16 predates the latest sourced balance update.

Keep DLC requirements visible when choosing a build. Bandai Namco’s official site describes Shadow of the Erdtree as adding weapons, equipment, skills, and magic, and states that it requires the base game. Not every build needs the expansion, but a guide or recommendation that depends on DLC content should say so clearly. Impenetrable Thorns is a DLC-dependent example because the cited guide locates it in Shadow Keep.

How to choose a build for your next boss
- Check your game version. Apply the latest update and consult Bandai Namco’s patch 1.17 notes for changes to your weapon, shield, or spell.
- Identify the encounter constraint. Decide whether your main issue is finding safe attack windows, fighting at range, conserving FP, surviving hits, or dealing with resistance.
- Choose an archetype that addresses it. Favor range if staying close is the problem; consider a shield-oriented approach if blocking fits your timing; choose direct melee if you can reliably exploit close-range openings.
- Confirm access and requirements in-game. Check equipment, spell requirements, FP cost, and location. Establish whether the option requires Shadow of the Erdtree.
- Test the setup against the target. If damage is poor or attacks are difficult to land, change the damage type, distance, or equipment rather than assuming a general tier list applies to that boss.
