There is no single best setup for every character or encounter: shield balance, weapon requirements, equipment weight, game progress, and DLC access all matter.
How to build a tank that can still move
A tank build is a trade-off, not a way to become immune to damage. Greatshields are the strongest general choice for blocking: Bandai Namco says they perform best for pure blocking, followed by medium shields and then small shields. Higher Guard Boost reduces the stamina cost of blocked attacks, and greatshields make enemies bounce more often, which can open a safer chance to counter. Blocking still uses stamina; if it reaches zero while you are guarding, you can be left open to a critical attack. Bandai Namco’s combat guide explains these mechanics.

Build around the whole loadout rather than selecting the heaviest armor first. Your shield and weapon need to leave enough stamina for the attack sequence you are facing, while the combined weight of armor, shield, and weapon should preserve a useful roll. Bandai Namco recommends Medium Roll or below in general.
Choose a roll threshold before adding weight
The official weight ratios are: Fast Roll at 29.9% or below; Medium Roll from 30% through 69.9%; Heavy Roll from 70% through 99.9%; and Over-encumbered at 100% or more. These percentages are your equipment load relative to maximum load. A Heavy Roll sacrifices mobility that can matter when an attack is safer to dodge than to block.

Use armor for a purpose
Heavy armor usually provides more Poise, but weighs more. Bandai Namco gives 70 Poise as a broad rule of thumb that can help against quick attackers such as wolves; it is not a universal breakpoint for every PvE fight or PvP matchup. Altered armor may weigh less, sometimes at the cost of defense or a unique attribute. Decide whether extra Poise is worth the load rather than treating maximum armor weight as the goal. Set Endurance for stamina and equipment load
Endurance supports both halves of a tank build: it increases stamina and equipment load. Stamina is the immediate resource for surviving a string of blocked attacks and still having capacity to counter or dodge. Equipment load determines whether your preferred armor, weapon, and shield keep you within your intended roll tier.

Bandai Namco describes stamina softcaps at 50 and equipment-load gains softcapping at 60, while noting that a player often need not reach either value. Its example of 40 Stamina with suitable talismans supporting heavy armor and a colossal weapon is an illustration, not a universal stat target. Set Endurance according to your chosen gear and stamina needs rather than copying a level from another build. The official advanced-stats guide explains the stat curves.
- Test whether your stamina lasts through the enemy’s attack string, with some left for a counter or dodge.
- Check the load ratio after equipping the weapon and shield you actually intend to use.
- If you cross into Heavy Load, reduce weight or invest in equipment-load support instead of accepting the slower roll by default.
Choose a shield with Patch 1.17 in mind
Patch 1.17, released August 27, 2026, changed Guard Boost and/or weight on many shields, so pre-patch recommendations may no longer describe the same trade-offs. The listed platform coverage is PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X|S, and Steam. Consult the official Patch 1.17 notes when comparing shield values in your current game version.

Patch 1.17 increased Guard Boost and reduced weight for Lordsworn’s Shield, Briar Greatshield, Spiked Palisade Shield, Icon Shield, Golden Beast Crest Shield, Manor Towershield, Crossed-Tree Towershield, Inverted Hawk Towershield, Dragon Towershield, Distinguished Greatshield, Gilded Greatshield, Black Steel Greatshield, Ant’s Skull Plate, and Erdtree Greatshield. It increased Guard Boost for Wooden Greatshield, Cuckoo Greatshield, Redmane Greatshield, Golden Greatshield, Crucible Hornshield, Dragonclaw Shield, Eclipse Crest Greatshield, Jellyfish Shield, and One-Eyed Shield, and reduced the weight of the Haligtree Crest Greatshield. These changes identify candidates to compare, not a universal winner: upgrades, encounter damage, and the rest of your gear still affect the choice.

A Strength-oriented weapon fits the defensive melee approach, but choose by moveset, reach, upgrade path, and stat requirements as well as scaling. Weapon scaling changes with weapon level and affinity, so the weapon that suits your character may differ from a list made for another setup. Bandai Namco’s advanced-stats guide illustrates this with a Heavy Greatsword at 55 Strength and 12 Dexterity while two-handing: that specific setup has 819 total attack power versus 744 for its unmodified example. Those figures are an example, not general build targets.

After a block, a Guard Counter can deal substantial stance damage. Charged heavy attacks and jumping heavy attacks can also pressure stance; breaking an enemy’s stance creates an opening for a critical attack. A greatshield can make an attack bounce, but do not counter automatically if the enemy may follow up. Lower the shield between strings when safe to recover stamina, and dodge attacks that would exhaust your reserve or are poorly suited to blocking. Adapt the setup to progress, DLC, and the encounter
Some tank recommendations rely on late-game or Shadow of the Erdtree equipment. Mobalytics’ current guide recommends options including the Greatshield Talisman, Two-Headed Turtle Talisman, Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman, Bull-Goat armor, and mixed heavy armor, while emphasizing Medium Load and a balance of damage negation, Poise, and weight. Treat those as that guide’s candidate choices, not official rankings; availability depends on your progress and, for DLC items, access to the expansion. For a base-game or earlier-stage character, use the same principles with equipment already available: a shield whose blocking and weight fit your current load, a Strength-scaling weapon you can wield and upgrade, and armor that does not push you into a roll tier you do not want. Before a difficult fight, reconsider the balance for its damage type and attack pattern. A physical-blocking focus may not be the best answer to every source of damage, and a boss with punishing follow-ups may reward dodging over repeated guarding.
Quick build checklist
- Shield: Compare Guard Boost, physical negation, and weight using current-version values; do not assume an old ranking still applies.
- Stamina: Leave enough to handle a combo and still counter or dodge. Drop your guard during safe gaps.
- Load: Equip the full set and confirm the ratio remains at 69.9% or below for Medium Load.
- Armor: Add Poise and defense only when their weight cost fits your roll and stamina plan.
- Weapon: Match Strength investment and affinity to the weapon’s scaling, requirements, reach, and moveset.
- Progress: Check whether suggested gear is base-game, DLC, or late-game before building around it.
