In Elden Ring, temporary buffs do not all stack: most belong to interaction categories, and applying a second effect in the same category removes the first. Variant buffs can conflict when they provide a similar effect, while unique buffs can coexist with other categories but not with another copy of themselves. The practical check is to identify an effect’s category, target, and duration before using it.
How do buffs work in Elden Ring?
Eldenpedia groups buffs into six categories: weapon, body, aura, health-regeneration, variant, and unique. Its general rule is one active buff per category; applying another buff in that category replaces the earlier one. That means a longer list of available spells, skills, and items does not imply that all their effects can be combined.

Check the category of the specific named effect before applying it. The ordinary one-per-category rule has qualifications for variant and unique effects, so do not infer an effect’s behavior from its apparent purpose alone.
Variant buffs
Variant buffs may interfere with another effect when they provide a similar benefit. This is not described as a blanket rule that every variant buff cancels every other buff; compare the actual effects involved.

Unique buffs
Unique buffs can coexist with other buffs, but a second copy of the same unique effect does not stack. Reapplying it resets its duration.
Which buffs stack, and which overwrite one another?
For a practical check, compare the effects in this order:
- Category: if both are in the same ordinary category, expect the newly applied buff to replace the earlier one.
- Variant interaction: if either effect is a variant, check whether the pair provides a similar effect.
- Unique interaction: a unique effect can coexist with other buffs, but another copy of that same effect refreshes rather than adds a second instance.
- Target and weapon: confirm the effect can apply to the intended character, weapon, or area.
- Duration and mode: check the timer and, where relevant, whether the effect differs between PvE and PvP.
This is an interaction guide, not an exhaustive item-by-item stacking list: the available Eldenpedia excerpt establishes the category framework but does not expose a complete current inventory.

How do weapon buffs work?
Weapon buffs are self-targeted and usually offensive. Eldenpedia’s weapon guidance is best treated as a rule of thumb, because it includes exceptions and compatibility can depend on the exact weapon, affinity, buff, or skill.

- Weapon buffs generally cannot be applied to ranged weapons or casting implements, with a few shield-specific exceptions.
- Weapons upgraded with Smithing Stones are usually buffable; weapons upgraded with Somber Smithing Stones usually are not. There are exceptions in both groups.
- Weapons with affinities other than Standard, Heavy, Keen, or Quality are described as incompatible with most external weapon buffs, though compatible weapon skills may be exceptions.
Do not treat those broad patterns as a definitive compatibility check for a particular build. Verify the exact weapon and effect before spending FP or an item.
Applying buffs to two weapons
Eldenpedia describes a handling method for maintaining buffs on two weapons: buff the left-hand weapon while two-handing it, then switch back and buff the right-hand weapon. This is not established as universal for every weapon or buff, so check that both effects apply successfully in your setup.

How long do temporary buffs last?
There is no single standard timer. These examples from Eldenpedia’s undated reference illustrate the range; they are not a complete list.

Use the named effect’s duration rather than assuming a standard timer. A duration by itself also does not tell you whether an effect is compatible with a weapon or can coexist with another buff.

Bandai Namco’s version 1.17 notes are dated August 27, 2026, and describe support for the Tarnished Pack alongside gameplay balance adjustments. Listed spell changes include increased power for Feather of the Divine Bird and Rain of Fire, and expanded range for O, Flame! The notes also list PvP changes to Rugalea’s Roar and Rotten Breath / Ekzykes’s Decay. They do not announce a general change to buff categories or stacking; that does not establish that every individual buff value has remained unchanged.

For current-build decisions, check named effects against the version you are playing, especially when comparing PvP performance or values. Bandai Namco describes Tarnished Edition as including the base game and Shadow of the Erdtree, and says Tarnished Pack content is available for the base game and expansion. That does not establish that every buff in a full inventory requires the expansion.
What a complete buff comparison should include
When deciding between two effects, compare more than the headline benefit. The useful fields are category and overwrite behavior, effect type, duration, applicable target or weapon, resource or stat requirements, and PvE versus PvP value. The available reference excerpt supports selected category, duration, and PvP distinctions, but not a complete item-by-item table of those fields.
