The Dark Moon Greatsword is a late-game Intelligence weapon, not a starting build centerpiece: you receive it at Moonlight Altar after completing Ranni’s questline. Build toward its requirements first—16 Strength, 11 Dexterity, and 38 Intelligence—then prioritize Intelligence and enough Vigor and Mind to stay alive and use its skill. Until you reach the weapon, an Intelligence-friendly stand-in such as the Meteorite Staff or Moonveil can carry you through progression.
How to get the Dark Moon Greatsword
Ranni’s questline is the gate to this weapon. After completing the quest, collect the Dark Moon Greatsword at Moonlight Altar beneath the Cathedral of Manus Celes. That makes the weapon a destination for a progressing character rather than gear you can plan to use from the opening hours. The Elden Ring Wiki’s weapon guide lists the acquisition details.

What to use before you get it
For the player asking, “what should i even be using until i get it?”, the practical answer is to use a temporary Intelligence option rather than delay progression until the greatsword is available. The Elden Ring Wiki identifies the Meteorite Staff and Moonveil as possible early-game companions for an Intelligence character. They are alternatives, not required components of the eventual Dark Moon Greatsword build.
- Meteorite Staff: a staff option while developing an Intelligence-focused character.
- Moonveil: a faster weapon alternative if you prefer a quicker moveset while progressing. The cited guide describes it as available earlier than the Dark Moon Greatsword.
Once you obtain the greatsword, respec or adjust levels if needed to meet its attributes and decide whether you want to keep a quicker backup for matchups where a slower greatsword is inconvenient.

How to scale the build
Meet the weapon’s requirements before spending levels to optimize damage: 16 Strength, 11 Dexterity, and 38 Intelligence, according to the Elden Ring Wiki, updated September 11, 2026. Intelligence is the central offensive investment for this setup; keep Vigor and Mind high enough for your preferred survivability and skill use. Additional Strength or Dexterity is a choice for your wider weapon plan, not a prerequisite beyond the listed minimums.
For a level-150 example, the same guide recommends 55 Vigor, 30 Mind, 20 Strength, and 70 Intelligence. Treat these as one guide’s template, not a universal optimum or a measured damage benchmark. Remaining points depend on starting class and any other needs; the template itself does not establish a particular damage output or success rate.
How to use the weapon’s skill
The weapon skill, Moonlight Greatsword, temporarily buffs the blade and enables ranged magic pressure. During the buff, use strong or charged attacks to send moonlight waves at enemies; this lets you apply pressure without committing to every approach as a melee swing. The community wiki specifically describes waves on strong attacks, while the Elden Ring Wiki describes ranged waves during the buff.
The Elden Ring Wiki says the buff lasts roughly a minute and that projectiles cost no FP during its window. Treat duration and precise behavior as patch-sensitive rather than guaranteed across every game version. No named, published performance statistic for this particular build is established by the cited sources.

Support gear and spirit ashes
The Elden Ring Wiki’s current guide recommends the following supporting setup. These are that guide’s suggestions, not independently tested or universally optimal choices.
- Off-hand staff: Carian Regal Scepter.
- Talismans: Shard of Alexander, Magic Scorpion Charm, Graven-Mass Talisman, and Green Turtle Talisman.
- Wondrous Physick: Magic-Shrouding Cracked Tear and Intelligence-knot Crystal Tear.
- Spirit ash options: Black Knife Tiche or Mimic Tear.
When to switch weapons or change approach
A magic-centered damage plan can be less effective against magic-resistant enemies. The Elden Ring Wiki’s guide calls out Radagon and Elden Beast as encounters where a physical option is worth carrying or switching to. Keep a backup that suits your build rather than assuming the Dark Moon Greatsword will be the right answer to every boss.
| Option | When it fits | Trade-off described by the guide |
|---|---|---|
| Dark Moon Greatsword | After Ranni’s questline; for a greatsword-centered Intelligence build. | Slower greatsword attacks, with ranged moonlight pressure during the skill buff. |
| Moonveil | As an earlier option or for players who want a faster moveset. | Faster than the Dark Moon Greatsword; it is an alternative rather than a required build piece. |
| Wing of Astel | For another magic-wave option. | The cited guide lists it as an alternative; it does not establish a direct performance comparison. |
| Sword of Night and Flame | For a player willing to use a split Intelligence/Faith investment. | It points away from an Intelligence-only emphasis. |
| Physical backup | For magic-resistant matchups, particularly Radagon and Elden Beast per the guide. | The cited guide recommends a physical option but does not specify one universally best choice. |
