Dragonlord Placidusax is the hardest dragon fight in the base game by this guide’s editorial ranking; Flying Dragon Agheel is a more approachable starting point. This is a selective comparison, not a verified list of every dragon encounter in Elden Ring: it covers those two base-game bosses and, separately, Bayle the Dread from Shadow of the Erdtree. Their relative difficulty is not universal—character build, upgrades, summons, and when you choose to fight can change how each encounter feels.
How this ranking works
The order is an editorial judgment, not a measured difficulty score or a claim of player consensus. It weighs when a player might encounter a boss, how readable its attacks are, how much the arena and positioning matter, and how broadly its attacks cover the battlefield. An open-world route is not a fixed progression: players can reach encounters with very different levels of preparation, and summons or damage type can also shift the experience.

The publisher notes that areas vary in danger and advises players struggling with a fight to explore and return later. It also recommends exploration to improve flask capacity and effectiveness. Bandai Namco’s gameplay overview gives that advice for the game generally, not as a dragon-specific strategy.
Dragon fights ranked from easiest to hardest
1. Flying Dragon Agheel — most approachable of these picks
Agheel is a useful early-game reference point: a secondary ranking describes the encounter as comparatively easy among true dragon fights and notes that players can leave and return after gaining strength. That makes Agheel the least demanding entry in this short comparison, not an objectively easy boss for every character or a fight with a universal recommended level. Position Is Everything’s ranking is one publisher’s assessment rather than a standardized comparison.
#1 Best Overall
- Collaborating with George R.R. Martin to create the ELDEN RING mythos has been a genuinely delightful experience and a source of wonderful inspiration. The team is working hard to ensure that the world of ELDEN RING will be a fascinating place for players to explore, filled with peril and wonder from its furthest reaches to its lowest depths. This is a FromSoftware title through and through, rich in fantasy and RPG action. We sincerely hope you look forward to it.
- Building the world of ELDEN RING with Miyazaki-san and his team was a treat! The graphics, mythos, and action-RPG gameplay will deliver an unforgettable experience. I can’t wait for people to see what ELDEN RING has in store for them.” Said George R.R. Martin.
2. Bayle the Dread — optional Shadow of the Erdtree boss
Bayle belongs in the ranking only if you include the expansion. Bandai Namco describes Shadow of the Erdtree as adding new enemies, boss encounters, and plotlines; the community-maintained Eldenpedia entry identifies Bayle as an optional DLC boss. This establishes the encounter’s expansion scope, but the available sources do not provide comparable detail to place Bayle’s difficulty with confidence against Agheel and Placidusax. Treat this slot as a broad editorial placement, not a precise verdict. PC Gamer’s Shadow of the Erdtree guide also includes a dedicated Bayle guide.
3. Dragonlord Placidusax — hardest of these picks
Placidusax ranks hardest here because the cited guides characterize the encounter as a demanding late-game test of positioning, timing, area control, and changing phases. A 2026 ranking places him at the difficult end of its comparison. That remains an editorial assessment, not a universal result.
Rank #3
- Elden Ring: Nightreign - Seekers Edition /PS5
GamesRadar+’s guide describes lightning and fire attacks, broad coverage, teleporting attacks, and attack windups. It recommends watching for the storm-cloud cue when Placidusax vanishes; the guide also treats longer windups and cooldowns as potential openings. Those observations come from a secondary guide published in 2022, not official patch notes, and no tactic is guaranteed to be safe for every build or game version.
Does this include every dragon fight?
No. The available sources establish useful points of comparison for Agheel and Placidusax, and identify Bayle as an optional expansion boss, but they do not support a complete, consistently documented roster of every qualifying dragon encounter across the base game and DLC. Calling this list “all” dragon fights would overstate what is established. Eldenpedia maintains a broader dragon category reference, but it is community-maintained rather than an official publisher roster.

For the base-game encounters, you do not need the expansion. Shadow of the Erdtree is relevant only to Bayle and its other added content; check the current listing for your platform’s compatibility and the base-game requirement before buying it. Bandai Namco’s official game page describes the expansion’s added content.
