In phase one, find and hit the three golden-glowing students who are singing to break her barrier. In phase two, dodge tracking magic sideways or diagonally and close the distance instead of chasing her summons. If the singers or barrier genuinely fail to appear, reset the attempt; a single old player report does not establish a widespread current bug.
Break Rennala’s barrier in phase one
Rennala is protected while the first phase is active. Look around the library for three students glowing gold and singing, then hit each one. Their locations can vary between attempts, so keep searching the room rather than repeatedly attacking Rennala. Once all three triggers have been hit, her barrier breaks and she drops briefly; use that opening to deal damage.

Change tactics when phase two begins
The second phase is a different fight, not a continuation of the shield puzzle. Rennala uses tracking magic and can summon temporary attackers. The independent Elden Ring Wiki guide recommends moving laterally or diagonally to evade tracking spells, sprinting perpendicular to a charged beam, and closing the gap rather than spending time fighting summons. These are guide tactics, not official developer instructions. The guide lists level 45+ and a +8 weapon as a recommendation, not a requirement.
If the singers or barrier do not appear
A 2022 Reddit post describes a co-op attempt on PS4 where the phase-one singers or shield seemed absent, while the encounter worked solo. That is an anecdotal report, not evidence of a confirmed or widespread current bug, and it does not establish a platform-specific fix.

- Return to the Site of Grace and reset the attempt.
- Retry in a fresh co-op session.
- If the issue recurs, try the encounter solo to see whether the trigger appears there. This is a troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed workaround.
Check co-op setup and session rules
For a standard session, the host uses a Furled Finger Remedy (also called a Furlcalling Finger Remedy in FromSoftware’s manual) to reveal summon signs. A guest uses the Tarnished’s Furled Finger to place a golden sign. Bandai Namco advises players to be in approximately the same area, such as near the same Site of Grace. A host can summon up to two cooperative guests; matching passwords restrict the signs shown to players using that exact password.
Co-op ends when the area boss is defeated, a participant dies, the connection drops, or a player ends the session. Bandai Namco’s multiplayer guide states: “Aside from death, disinvitation, or internet interruption, the other condition that will end a cooperative session is the defeat of an enemy that is considered a boss or mini-boss.” Defeating Rennala therefore completes the host’s co-op objective and returns guests to their own worlds. FromSoftware’s manual also says a host cannot start co-op in an area where that host has already defeated the area boss; this can explain an unavailable summon session after a clear, not an inability to fight Rennala cooperatively.
