What Somber Smithing Stone [7] is for
Somber Smithing Stone [7] upgrades a special armament from +6 to +7 on its upgrade path. It is not the material used for ordinary weapons. GameSpot’s guide and the Gamer Guides item database describe it as an upgrade material for special armaments: GameSpot’s Somber Smithing Stone guide and Gamer Guides’ upgrade-material database.

Pickups in Volcano Manor and the Mountaintops
Volcano Manor dungeon
Look in the fiery village dungeon behind Volcano Manor. GamesRadar+ describes the stone on a corpse beside a fountain surrounded by lava slugs. This distinction matters: the pickup is in the dungeon route behind the manor, not simply somewhere inside the manor house. The route is a one-off pickup.

Mountaintops of the Giants
GamesRadar+ also lists a corpse at a giant skull in the area connecting the Forbidden Lands and the Mountaintops, plus a Teardrop Scarab east of Zamor Ruins. The corpse is a direct pickup; the scarab must be found and killed. Neither is the same as unlocking an unlimited merchant supply.
Other guide-listed locations
GameSpot also lists Castle Sol, Ainsel River Main, Nokstella, and the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds among locations associated with Somber Smithing Stone [7]. Its guide connects access to Ainsel River Main with the portal at Renna’s Rise, unlocked after retrieving Ranni’s Nokron treasure. These areas may suit a character whose progression has already opened those routes; the guide does not establish them as a single required sequence.

Farm hand-spiders for a chance-based drop
In the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds, GamesRadar+ reports a small chance for hand-spiders near Dung Eater’s cell to drop Somber Smithing Stone [7]. You can repeat the encounter, but no specific drop rate is established, so this is not a dependable way to obtain a stone quickly. If you need a guaranteed item, pursue a listed world pickup instead; for repeated supply, the bell-bearing unlock is the more reliable route.
Unlock unlimited purchases with Bell Bearing [4]
- Reach Crumbling Farum Azula. This is a late-game area; the cited GameSpot guide describes access after the Fire Giant, though progression can vary with game state.
- Defeat the Godskin Duo and collect Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing [4]. GameSpot places the bearing in Crumbling Farum Azula and reports it is obtained after this boss encounter.
- Return to Roundtable Hold and give the bearing to the Twin Maiden Husks. The bearing adds Somber Smithing Stone [7] to their stock for unlimited purchases.
Unlike a corpse pickup or enemy drop, the merchant route is repeatable once unlocked. Its trade-off is the late-game progression needed to reach the bearing.

Which route should you take?
- Need one stone and already have access to the area? Take a guaranteed pickup, such as the Volcano Manor dungeon corpse or a Mountaintops pickup.
- Already exploring the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds? Hand-spider farming is possible, but it is luck-based.
- Need stones for multiple special armaments or future upgrades? Work toward Bell Bearing [4] to unlock repeatable purchases.
