The clearest story sequence is Silent Hill: Origins → Silent Hill → Silent Hill 3. SILENT HILL f is set earlier, in 1960s Japan, but tells a self-contained story. Silent Hill 2 and several later games do not fit into one fully confirmed timeline, so the most accurate order separates direct story continuations from parallel, alternate, or uncertain entries.
Silent Hill games in chronological order
This is a story-setting guide, not release order. The entries below distinguish a stated setting from a relative placement inferred from game and guide material. There is no single comprehensive official calendar that fixes an exact year for every game.

| Story placement | Game | What the chronology establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Earliest stated setting | SILENT HILL f | Set in 1960s Japan. Its Ebisugaoka story is self-contained and separate from the older games’ central story threads. |
| Beginning of the clearest connected arc | Silent Hill: Origins | A prequel to the original Silent Hill. A specialist chronology uses it as a relative starting point, not as a universally established calendar year. |
| After Origins | Silent Hill | Continues the story thread that leads to Silent Hill 3. |
| Parallel story; exact position relative to Silent Hill 3 is not settled | Silent Hill 2 | James Sunderland’s largely self-contained story. Guide evidence and in-game references place it in the year of Walter Sullivan’s case, ten years before Silent Hill 4; that relative dating does not establish a universally agreed calendar year. |
| Continuation of the original game | Silent Hill 3 | Continues the Harry Mason and Heather story from Silent Hill. |
| Later than Silent Hill 2 | Silent Hill 4: The Room | Connects to the earlier game through James’s father, Frank Sunderland, and the Walter Sullivan case. |
| Unplaced in the examined chronology | Silent Hill: Homecoming | Its connection to the classic story is limited, and the consulted chronology does not establish a reliable event placement or precise year. |
| Alternate reality | Silent Hill: Shattered Memories | An alternate-reality retelling, not a dated chapter in the main continuity. |
| Unplaced in the examined chronology | Silent Hill: Downpour | Loosely connected to the classic story; the consulted chronology does not establish a reliable place in its event sequence. |
How to read the connected timeline
The Harry Mason and Heather story
For the most direct narrative progression, follow Silent Hill: Origins, then Silent Hill, then Silent Hill 3. The first is a prequel, while the third continues the original game’s story. This is the strongest linked sequence in the series chronology.
James Sunderland’s story
Silent Hill 2 is not a required bridge between the Harry and Heather games. It follows James Sunderland in a substantially standalone story. Its connection to Silent Hill 4 comes through Frank Sunderland and the Walter Sullivan case, giving it a useful relative position before The Room without settling its exact place against Silent Hill 3.

The newer, separate setting
SILENT HILL f is the earliest entry here by its stated setting, but chronological first does not mean narratively necessary. Konami described it as the series’ first entry set in Japan, and the PlayStation product page identifies its setting as 1960s Japan. Its story was created for the game, so it can be played independently of the older continuity.
Why exact years are hard to pin down
Supplemental Konami guides and details in the games support relative timing for some entries, but they do not supply a consistent, exact calendar year for every classic game. Specialist fan chronologies interpret that evidence and sometimes choose a reference point, such as treating Origins as year zero. Those are useful ways to organize events, not proof that every listed year is settled canon.
Rank #2
- Fully Remade to terrify modern audiences
- KONAMI's intense psychological horror masterpiece SILENT HILL 2 is made exclusively for PlayStation 5
- The main protagonist James Sunderland searches for clues in the namesake town, after receiving a mysterious letter from his wife Mary… who has long been dead
- Experience the eerie monsters and other manifestations of James' consciousness reworked after 20 years
- Made with state-of-the-art technology to play on modern entertainment systems in 4K
For that reason, the sequence above gives exact setting information only where it is established, and uses relationships such as “prequel,” “continues the story,” or “ten years before” where the evidence is relative. It leaves Homecoming and Downpour unplaced rather than assigning them unsupported dates.
Where remakes fit
A remake retells an existing game’s story; it does not add a separate event to the in-universe chronology. Treat a remake of Silent Hill 2 as another version of James Sunderland’s story, rather than as a new chapter after Silent Hill 4. The same principle applies to a remake of the original Silent Hill: it belongs at that story’s place, not as an additional timeline entry.

- Experienced entirely in first person, explore, evade, and survive using a limited set of weapons and tools, including a pocket television used to tune into unstable signals. Evasion is tense; combat is frenetic, while narrative driven puzzles reveal a truth that refuses to stay submerged.
- SILENT HILL: Townfall is a full-length, self-contained psychological horror set against the cold, isolated backdrop of Scotland, 1996
Chronological order versus best play order
If you want the most connected story, play Origins, Silent Hill, and Silent Hill 3 in that order. Add Silent Hill 2 as a separate story rather than treating it as a prerequisite; play Silent Hill 4 after it if you want to follow their connection. SILENT HILL f can be started on its own, while Shattered Memories belongs to an alternate reality. This order answers what happens first in the story world, not how the series was originally released.
