Those symptoms point to different checks. The steps below use general Steam troubleshooting guidance; they are not guaranteed Elden Ring fixes, and they do not establish that the game has a current outage. Steam’s listing confirms Elden Ring supports online co-op and PvP: ELDEN RING on Steam.
1. Identify what “lag” means in your case
Steam Support defines lag as “high network latency interfering with gameplay.” In practice, note whether online actions are delayed or characters rubber-band, whether the game disconnects, or whether the image stutters and runs at a low frame rate. Stuttering that also happens outside multiplayer is different from a connection problem; Steam notes that background programs can contribute to choppy gameplay and low frame rates. 2. Check Steam’s service status
Before changing your setup, check whether Steam is reporting a wider service problem. Steam recommends checking its server status when diagnosing connection failures: Troubleshooting Network Connectivity. A Steam status check does not confirm Elden Ring’s own service status, so treat it as one clue rather than a game-specific outage report.
3. Test your local connection
If you play over Wi-Fi or a powerline adapter, temporarily test a direct wired connection if one is practical. Steam identifies wireless and powerline connections as possible sources of intermittent failures. This is a diagnostic comparison, not a promise that Ethernet will fix the issue. If the problem changes on a wired link, that points toward the local connection path for further investigation.

4. Check the router and its placement
Steam’s connectivity guidance recommends testing the router as part of troubleshooting. Its lag guidance also notes that router placement and overheating can affect connectivity. Check that the router is not unusually hot and that its placement is not obstructed; then compare gameplay with your usual setup. Do not treat port forwarding as a default Elden Ring fix: Steam discusses it only as a possible step in particular circumstances, not as a game-specific requirement.
5. Review firewall permissions
A Steam client or game update can prompt a renewed firewall authorization request. Check your firewall’s allowed-app settings and make sure Steam and the game have the permissions your configuration requires. Steam’s guidance on firewall use is here: Using a Firewall with Steam. If you briefly disable a firewall only to isolate whether it is involved, turn it back on immediately; Steam does not recommend leaving it disabled.

6. Close or investigate background programs
Temporarily close programs that use substantial bandwidth or may interfere with gameplay, then compare the result. Steam lists background applications as a possible source of connection problems and notes that bandwidth-using programs can contribute to choppy gameplay or low frame rate. This is a broad troubleshooting check—not evidence that any particular overlay or application causes Elden Ring lag.
7. Compare another time or network
If connection problems happen at particular times, repeat the test at another hour. Steam says time-specific issues can point to possibilities such as ISP traffic shaping or blocked required ports; those possibilities are not a diagnosis. If you can safely compare on another network, note whether the symptoms change. Contact your ISP if the timing pattern or network comparison suggests the issue may be on its side.

8. Document the symptoms before escalating
If the problem continues, record the details that help separate a Steam-wide issue from one limited to Elden Ring. Include the symptom, when it occurs, any exact error text, whether Steam connectivity is affected elsewhere, and whether testing a wired connection changed anything.
