How a beginner mage setup works
Sorceries are cast with a staff and consume FP. Before you can use a spell, you must memorize it at a Site of Grace; spells are not simply available because you have found them. Your basic loop is to prepare a useful selection at a Grace, equip a staff in a hand slot, and keep an eye on the FP bar as you explore or fight.

- Memorize spells: Rest at a Site of Grace and choose Memorize Spell. Assign spells to the available memory slots. You can change the selection at a Grace.
- Equip a staff: Put a staff in a hand slot and use it to cast sorceries.
- Manage FP: Check your FP before committing to repeated casts, particularly in a long fight. Keep space to dodge and consider a close-range answer rather than spending every encounter trying to cast from a distance.
Bandai Namco’s beginner guide describes the core requirements: sorceries need a staff and FP, and spells must be memorized at a Site of Grace.
Why choose Astrologer?
Bandai Namco Europe describes the Astrologer as “A scholar who reads fate in the stars. Heir to the school of glintstone sorcery.” That makes it a natural starting origin for a character built around Intelligence and sorcery. It does not prevent you from developing other attributes, using other equipment, or changing your approach later. The publisher’s class overview explicitly says that starting class is not a limitation.

#1 Best Overall
- Collaborating with George R.R. Martin to create the ELDEN RING mythos has been a genuinely delightful experience and a source of wonderful inspiration. The team is working hard to ensure that the world of ELDEN RING will be a fascinating place for players to explore, filled with peril and wonder from its furthest reaches to its lowest depths. This is a FromSoftware title through and through, rich in fantasy and RPG action. We sincerely hope you look forward to it.
- Building the world of ELDEN RING with Miyazaki-san and his team was a treat! The graphics, mythos, and action-RPG gameplay will deliver an unforgettable experience. I can’t wait for people to see what ELDEN RING has in store for them.” Said George R.R. Martin.
Beginner stat priorities
Think in priorities, not a rigid level-by-level recipe. Your needs will depend on the spells and equipment you choose, and the official guidance does not establish a single Astrologer-specific allocation.
- Vigor: Raise it so you are less likely to die before finishing a cast or recovering from a mistake. Bandai Namco Entertainment America’s broad character-build guidance recommends aiming for at least 40 Vigor; it says reaching 60 can be worthwhile after other stats are where you need them. These are general targets, not mandatory checkpoints for every mage.
- Intelligence: Invest enough to meet the requirements of the sorceries you want to use, then prioritize it for sorcery-oriented offense.
- Mind: Add points when you regularly run short of FP during ordinary exploration or boss attempts.
- Endurance, Strength and Dexterity: Take only what your chosen equipment and playstyle require. They are not automatic priorities just because you started as Astrologer.
Do not let damage gains crowd out survivability: a spell build still needs to survive the time it takes to cast and reposition.
A flexible early spell and staff route
One current third-party PvE guide recommends Glintstone Pebble for ranged casting, Carian Slicer as a close-range option, and Rock Sling as an alternative that can pressure stance or cover enemies for whom ordinary magic damage is a poor answer. It also presents Meteorite Staff as an early option. Treat these as one possible route, not a universal ranking: the cited guide is not an official source, and the precise locations and comparative damage for these items are not corroborated by the official sources here.

Choose spells to cover different problems rather than filling every slot with similar ranged attacks. For any option, check whether you can obtain it at your current stage, its Intelligence requirement, its FP cost relative to its damage or utility, the range or damage type it adds to your kit, and whether it requires the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion. The current build reference is scoped to PvE; it cautions that PvP has different damage adjustments, so its recommendations should not be treated as a PvP build prescription.

Bandai Namco’s official version 1.17 patch notes include starting-class and balance changes. Exact build recommendations can therefore depend on game version, and a stat spread published for a particular level or mode is an example rather than a requirement. The current third-party level-150 Intelligence build reference covers the base game and Shadow of the Erdtree, reflects version 1.17, and is explicitly for PvE—not a beginner allocation.
