A three-player party can only be built from players on the same platform family, so a group split across those families cannot join one another no matter how the matchmaking is set up. Inside each family, cross-generation play works: PS4 players can team up with PS5 players, and Xbox One players can team up with Xbox Series X|S players.
What the official rules say
Bandai Namco Europe’s launch guide for the game, which lists May 30, 2025 as the general release date, states the rule directly: “Crossplay for different platforms is not available.” The same guide says players on PlayStation 4 and 5 can play together, and players on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S can play together. Bandai Namco’s official wiki gives the same rule as its FAQ answer, describing crossplay compatibility between PS5 and PS4 generations and between Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One generations, with no crossplay between the PlayStation, Xbox, and PC platforms. FromSoftware’s Japanese game FAQ says the same thing and adds that Steam play is limited to Steam.

Which friend groups can form a party
The compatibility question comes down to the combination of platforms in the group, not the game’s performance or the players’ skill level.

A mixed group of PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam friends therefore cannot form one trio. The workable options are to split into compatible subgroups, or for one group to adopt the platform the others already use.

Why the problem catches buyers off guard
In a public Reddit discussion of the game, one commenter describes buying the physical PS5 version because a friend playing on PC asked them to, then discovering the two could not play together. The anecdote is useful because it shows how easily the issue surfaces after purchase. It does not indicate how many players are affected, and it is not a measure of wider frustration with the game.
Is crossplay planned?
No official source available at the time of writing announces crossplay between PlayStation, Xbox, and PC/Steam, and the launch guide and wiki describe the current rules as the platform limits. Until a publisher announces a change, friends on different platform families should assume they cannot play together. Check Bandai Namco’s official channels for any update after this article is published.
Playing with fewer than three
The official game page presents three-player co-op as the core experience. FromSoftware’s FAQ also confirms that two-player and solo play are supported. Solo play can be done offline, but it has no NPC co-op partners, so a solo player is on their own for the session.
FromSoftware’s Japanese FAQ says online co-op on PlayStation and Xbox requires the applicable paid membership, while solo play does not. The membership names differ by region and by platform, so check the label your console shows before assuming what your account needs.

Troubleshooting a compatible trio that still fails
If every member is on a compatible platform and the party still will not form, work through this checklist from Bandai Namco’s wiki guidance, in order:
- Confirm the platform family. Every member must be on a platform that can match with the others: PS4 and PS5 together, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S together, or Steam with Steam.
- Use the same password. The password is case-sensitive, so “Trio” and “trio” do not match.
- Select Multiplayer Mode. Every member should be in the same mode.
- Target the same boss. Everyone needs to pick the same boss before matchmaking.
- Match game and regulation versions. All members need matching app and regulation updates. The official game page’s most recent update listing when this article was prepared was Hotfix 1.03.5, dated March 31, 2026. Later patches may exist, so check the current update notes before troubleshooting.
- Match the out-of-region matchmaking setting. If one player has it enabled and another does not, the group may not find each other.
- Advance Remembrance missions one player at a time. Only one member of a party can progress personal Remembrance missions on Limveld at once, according to Bandai Namco’s FAQ. Plan who will be the active player for those objectives.
If the party still fails after these checks, Bandai Namco advises restarting matchmaking or the game, then trying the platform’s own party or invite tools to connect the group.
DLC matching
Players who own The Forsaken Hollows expansion can match with players who do not own it when they target base-game bosses, so you do not need to buy the DLC to play those targets with DLC owners. However, the group cannot launch targets added by The Forsaken Hollows unless every player in the session owns the expansion, according to FromSoftware’s FAQ.
