The Elden Ring Nightreign network test offered a limited preview of three-player co-op, not a verdict on the game’s live-service reliability. It was scheduled for February 14–17, 2025, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The full game followed on May 30, 2025, and includes solo play as well as co-op.
What the February 2025 network test covered
Bandai Namco announced the closed test as a chance to take three-player teams through an evolving map and a three day-and-night cycle. The publisher also described a technical purpose: its European participation rules framed the preview as a controlled phase for evaluating network infrastructure stability and performance. That explains why it was called a network test, but it does not establish whether every issue was fixed—or how the service performs today. The test was a pre-release event, not an ongoing way to access the game. Bandai Namco’s May 22, 2025 launch guide lists the full game’s release date as May 30, 2025, with versions for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC via Steam.
How the full game’s co-op shapes the experience
Nightreign is built around three-player expeditions in the changing Limveld, where teams hunt one of eight Nightlords. The official product page describes inviting friends or finding companions, and presents eight heroes with distinct abilities that can combine into team synergies. Those mechanics make coordination part of the design: choosing how to work together can matter to a run, quite apart from whether the connection is behaving well. Playing with friends versus random teammates
Reviewer accounts suggest that the social setup can change how enjoyable a session feels. Echo Apsey’s TechRadar review, published May 28, 2025, says Apsey played 30 hours, completed the Nightlord bosses, and played with other creators and journalists during the review period. The review emphasizes strategizing and communicating with teammates. This is a reviewer’s assessment of play, not a network-performance measurement.
A first-person Tom’s Guide account describes early random-matchmaking sessions as frustrating, then reports a more enjoyable experience with friends and industry peers who could strategize together. Its author said communication with random teammates was limited to placing map pins. That is one person’s experience, not proof of a matchmaking or server defect, and it should not be treated as everyone’s likely result.

Can you play Nightreign solo without being online?
Yes. The launch guide says solo mode is available and states, “Solo mode does not require online connectivity.” The central design remains cooperative, but a player who wants to play alone does not need an internet connection for solo mode, according to Bandai Namco’s guide.
What the later update does—and does not—tell you about online play
On March 31, 2026, the official update notice reported a fix for an issue in which repeatedly using certain actions during multiplayer could make the game run slowly. The notice says the update is required for online play and gives these instructions:

- Steam: Relaunch the game after downloading the update.

“How was the Nightreign network test?” has a straightforward answer: it previewed three-player expeditions and gave a limited group a controlled opportunity to evaluate network infrastructure before release. The available reviewer accounts also show why playing with people who communicate may affect enjoyment. But subjective satisfaction and measurable connectivity are different things.
