What kind of game is Elden Ring Nightreign?
Nightreign is a standalone cooperative survival-action spin-off, not an expansion to Elden Ring. It launched on May 30, 2025, for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Steam. The official Japanese product information lists support for both three-player play and single-player mode. Bandai Namco’s product information describes expeditions as team hunts, so solo support should not be confused with a design built around a solitary campaign.

The basic appeal is familiar combat under unfamiliar pressure. You still need to read enemies, choose when to attack and learn boss patterns, but each expedition compresses exploration and preparation into a short, dangerous run. Compared with Elden Ring’s broad open-world journey, Nightreign is about making quick decisions and applying what you learn across changing attempts.
How an expedition works
An expedition lasts three in-game days. Nightfarers search Limveld for runes, weapons, passive abilities and support items while the Night’s Tide steadily reduces the area in which they can safely operate. The first two days build toward a final-day battle against a Nightlord.

- Explore and prepare: Find equipment and resources, fight enemies, and decide which opportunities are worth pursuing before the safe area contracts.
- Adapt your build: Choose weapons, abilities and support with the coming fights in mind. The publisher describes each run as a series of decisions about combat, exploration, equipment and boss weaknesses.
- Reach the Nightlord: Survive the expedition’s escalating pressure and take on its final boss on the third day.
Being downed is not necessarily the end for a teammate: Bandai Namco’s overview says, “If a player is downed, swift action is needed: attack them quickly to bring them back to life.” That mechanic reinforces the expedition’s cooperative emphasis—players have to notice trouble and react while a fight is still underway.
Is Nightreign worth playing solo?
It does offer single-player support, but the available review evidence suggests solo players should expect a tougher experience. In its May 2025 review, TechRadar described the game as built for three-player co-op and said solo play was initially difficult. That is the reviewer’s experience at launch, not a claim about the game’s current balance: Bandai Namco’s product page lists a Hotfix 1.03.5 entry dated March 31, 2026, and older difficulty observations may not reflect later changes.
The same review emphasized the value of communication and a regular group. If you already know Elden Ring’s combat and have friends who want to play together, the teamwork and time pressure may be part of the draw. If you want a quiet, unhurried solo adventure, the shrinking safe area and short expedition structure are important mismatches to weigh before buying.

What changes between expeditions?
The publisher lists eight Nightfarers, each with distinct abilities, giving players different tools and roles to bring into a run. Equipment choices, enemy encounters, the bosses on the route and knowledge of enemy weaknesses all shape how an expedition unfolds. The central progression is mastery: players learn the combat and encounters, then use that knowledge to make better decisions in subsequent hunts.

The Forsaken Hollows DLC adds two Nightfarers, new field bosses and locations, two third-day bosses, and a shifting-earth condition that changes the map. Bandai Namco announced it for the listed consoles and Steam; check your regional storefront for current availability and the edition you need.
What did the May 2025 review find?
TechRadar disclosed that its reviewer played for 30 hours on PS5, completed the Nightlord bosses and used performance mode with a DualSense Edge controller. The reviewer played with other creators and journalists during review access. In that May 2025 context, the review praised the fast, demanding action but identified matchmaking problems, no crossplay, solo difficulty and limited accessibility options as drawbacks.

- Best fit: Players who enjoy FromSoftware combat, like learning bosses through repetition, and can regularly play with a cooperative group.
- Possible fit: Experienced players willing to learn a demanding format alone, while accepting that the May 2025 review found solo play difficult.
- Less suitable: Anyone primarily looking for an expansive, leisurely solo adventure or relying on cross-platform play; the May 2025 review reported no crossplay.
For PC players, the publisher lists Windows 10 as the minimum operating-system requirement and Windows 11 as recommended, with 12 GB and 16 GB of RAM respectively and 30 GB of storage. Which editions are available?
Bandai Namco lists a physical Standard Edition and a Collector’s Edition. The Collector’s Edition contents listed by the publisher are a SteelBook, digital soundtrack, 25 cm Wylder statue, eight Nightfarer cards and a 40-page hard-cover artbook. Stock, regional contents and platform versions can vary; confirm the live listing with a retailer before ordering.
Bandai Namco Entertainment and FromSoftware said Nightreign had shipped five million units worldwide as of July 2025. That is a dated shipped-units milestone, not a current sales total.
