Elden Ring Nightreign got a new high-difficulty mode, Deep of Night, on September 11, 2025. It makes expeditions more punishing through stronger enemies, randomized Nightlord targets and escalating depth-based difficulty. But the September 24 follow-up patch also added safeguards against losing depth and included selected player buffs and boss nerfs, so September’s changes were not a blanket increase in difficulty.
What is Deep of Night?
Deep of Night is an additional mode for Elden Ring Nightreign, not a separate game or a replacement for standard expeditions. Bandai Namco announced it for September 11, 2025, describing it as a high-difficulty mode. Its central challenge is a run of expeditions whose difficulty rises with each depth, with victories and defeats affecting a rating that determines your depth. The publisher did not provide a percentage or other numerical measure for how much harder the mode is. The difference is instead defined by its rules and progression.
How Deep of Night differs from standard expeditions

These rules combine tougher combat with less control over what expedition you face. The special weapons also involve trade-offs: multiple effects can include drawbacks, so their benefits do not come without risk. The announcement does not quantify enemy-stat increases or specify a fixed difficulty multiplier. Official mode details

Unlocking Deep of Night and playing online
To access the mode, you must first defeat the Nightlord Night Aspect. Deep of Night requires online play and a connection to the game online, even if you choose to play solo. You can enter alone or in an expedition of up to three players; multiplayer generally matches players at the same depth. Bandai Namco’s announcement
September’s follow-up patch reduced the risk of losing depth
After the mode launched, Bandai Namco said a bug could prevent victories from raising a player’s rating. Its September 19 notice also announced a voluntary one-depth decrease and loss protection for depths 3–5. - At depth 3, one loss would not cause a depth decrease.
- At depths 4 and 5, two losses would not cause a depth decrease.
- A player at depth 1 in certain sessions with higher-depth players would not lose rating for a defeat.
- Players could voluntarily lower their depth by one.
These measures softened the progression penalty; they did not remove Deep of Night’s stronger enemies or its escalating depth structure.

The new mode was designed to raise the challenge, but the September 24 patch did not make every part of the game harder. It strengthened many player attacks and abilities and reduced the HP of several bosses in the first two nights. Within Deep of Night, it also reduced the HP and attack power of Everdark Maris. That means the headline “getting even harder” describes the mode’s design, not every balance change made that month. App Ver. 1.02.3 patch notes

What the latest located September notice says
The latest located official notice, dated September 18, 2026, lists App Ver. 1.03.4 and Regulation Ver. 1.03.5 for PS4 and PS5 and describes strengthened network-feature security.
