Elden Ring Nightreign’s Deep of Night Mode Makes Expeditions Harder

Elden Ring Nightreign’s Deep of Night mode is the likely subject of the claim that its expeditions are about to get harder. Bandai Namco announced the high-difficulty mode on August 28, 2025, with a September 11, 2025 start date. Its tougher enemies are only part of the challenge: players also lose control over which Nightlord they face, encounter terrain changes that are not reflected during a run, and face difficulty that scales with depth. The announcement describes a launch, not an upcoming change today.

What Deep of Night changes

Bandai Namco Europe’s August 28, 2025 announcement calls Deep of Night an explicitly high-difficulty Expedition mode. It states: “In ‘Deep of Night,’ the enemies that appear are stronger than usual.” That increased enemy strength sits alongside several structural constraints:

  • No target selection: players cannot specify which Nightlord they will fight.
  • Unreflected terrain changes: terrain may change, but those changes are not reflected during the run.
  • Depth scaling: difficulty increases according to the expedition’s depth.
  • Risk-and-reward gear: special Depths Relics and weapons with multiple additional effects can appear, but they also carry detrimental effects.

So Deep of Night makes expeditions harder through stronger enemies and escalating depth, while also withholding the target Nightlord selection. It is not simply a conventional enemy-stat increase.

Who can enter, and how rating works

The official announcement says players must first defeat Nightlord Night Aspect to unlock Deep of Night. The mode is online-only, and an expedition can start with one, two, or three players. Multiplayer generally matches players at similar depths.

Wins raise a player’s rating; failures lower it, with the penalty depending on progress through that session. Rating affects depth, and rating changes are the same whether a player goes solo or in multiplayer. In multiplayer, quitting or disconnecting triggers a penalty unless the player returns immediately, before the rating at disconnect is recorded. Bandai Namco describes Depths 4 and 5 as endless battles for players seeking a greater challenge.

How Deep of Night differs from a regular Expedition

The official announcement does not publish a side-by-side comparison, but its mode rules make the practical differences clear:

Enemy strength Usual enemy strength, as contrasted in Bandai Namco Europe’s August 28, 2025 announcement. Enemies are stronger than usual, according to the same announcement.
Nightlord choice The announcement does not specify the regular-mode selection rules. Players cannot specify the target Nightlord.
Terrain changes The announcement does not specify how regular Expeditions handle terrain changes. Ongoing terrain changes are not reflected during the run.
Scaling and progression The announcement does not describe regular-mode scaling or rating consequences. Difficulty rises with depth; wins increase rating, defeats reduce it, and rating affects depth.
Unlock requirement The announcement does not state a separate unlock requirement for regular Expeditions. Defeat Nightlord Night Aspect first.

What later balance updates changed

Later patch notes show adjustments in both directions, not a steady escalation in difficulty.

Patch 1.02.3

Bandai Namco Europe’s patch 1.02.3 notes include lower HP for selected night-boss versions and lower HP and attack power for Maris during an Everdark Sovereign Augur Expedition in Deep of Night. The same notes also increase attack or stagger damage for several Nightfarer attacks and list other player-side adjustments. These are specific changes, not evidence that every part of the mode became easier or harder.

Patch 1.03.2, January 15, 2026

The official America patch 1.03.2 notes increase the attack power and damage negation of Revenant spirits summoned in Deep of Night, with those benefits scaling by expedition depth. They also reduce attack power for some enemies in the Blacksmith Village location in Deep of Night, and reduce falling-hail damage during the Fissure in the Fog raid event. The combined changes are mixed balance adjustments, not a blanket increase in difficulty.

Is a new difficulty change imminent?

The headline’s “about to” matches the original 2025 announcement, which said Deep of Night would begin on September 11, 2025. The latest dated official notice in the material reviewed is a Japanese-site September 18, 2026 update notice for PS4 and PS5: App Ver. 1.03.4 / Regulation Ver. 1.03.5. It says the update strengthens network-feature security and is required for online play; it does not announce a difficulty change. Those version numbers apply to PS4 and PS5, not PC or Xbox. The Japanese news index also lists a PC update dated July 2, 2026, but the listing alone does not establish what it changed.
