Which Everdark boss is the Demon’s Souls throwback?
It is Everdark Augur, the enhanced Maris encounter in Elden Ring Nightreign. The fight begins with Maris’s initial form. After that form falls, Maris returns enlarged for the second phase, where the Storm Ruler becomes the key tool for dealing damage. How does the fight reference Demon’s Souls?
The connection is the Storm Ruler. PC Gamer identifies the Storm King encounter in Demon’s Souls as the weapon’s first appearance in a FromSoftware game. In both encounters, a specialized Storm Ruler attack lets you hit a huge airborne enemy with ranged wind slashes. You still have to watch the target and find an opening rather than treating the weapon as an automatic hit.
That shared setup makes “throwback” a fair description of the gameplay. It does not mean the fights are identical, or that FromSoftware has publicly confirmed the reference as an intentional callback. PC Gamer’s analysis of the comparison discusses the Storm Ruler’s history and the parallel.

How to use the Storm Ruler against Maris
Wait for the second phase
Defeat Maris’s initial form first. The enlarged Everdark phase is the one that supplies the Storm Ruler skill; the ranged weapon mechanic is not the opening phase’s defining feature.
Charge the attack and watch Maris’s height
The Storm Ruler skill can be charged to send a ranged slash. The guide recommends waiting until Maris is nearer the ground before releasing a charged attack, improving the chance that it connects. If Maris is higher, lighter attacks are an alternative. The encounter also includes Maris-specific bubbles, waves and changes in height, so timing and positioning remain part of the fight.
Is Everdark Augur currently in rotation?
Everdark encounters rotate, and Bandai Namco published a schedule for the event when it was introduced. That historical schedule and guides published in 2025 do not establish whether Augur is available on October 8, 2026. Check the game’s current in-game event listing for its status rather than relying on an old rotation schedule. Is the fight well received?
Reactions are mixed rather than settled. PC Gamer praised the unusual Storm Ruler mechanic, while GamesRadar described the fight as polarizing and reported complaints about its length and how far away Maris can be. Those are outlet-specific assessments, not evidence of a universal player consensus. GamesRadar’s coverage of the reception provides that contrasting view.

What is Elden Ring Nightreign?
Elden Ring Nightreign is a standalone adventure set in the Elden Ring universe, with a co-op format and multiple platform versions described on Bandai Namco’s official pages. Bandai Namco’s game page introduces the standalone game, and its platform information lists the supported systems.
