Elden Ring Performance Settings: How to Improve Frame Rate and Visuals

If Elden Ring suddenly runs worse on PC, check ray tracing before changing every other graphics option. The game can enable ray tracing unexpectedly after older save data is loaded, and Bandai Namco says the feature can affect both frame rate and resolution. Open the graphics menu, turn ray tracing off, then test the game before making further changes.

On consoles, the same visual/performance choice is under Game Options rather than the PC graphics menu. There is no officially supported universal “best settings” preset or published benchmark proving a fixed frame-rate gain from any particular combination. The reliable approach is to match settings to your platform, verify that ray tracing is intentional, compare your hardware with the correctly scoped requirements, and change one option at a time.

The quickest way to improve unstable Elden Ring performance

  1. Check ray tracing first. On PC, open System > Graphics (some versions label this Graphics Settings) and find Ray Tracing Quality or Raytracing Quality. Set it to Off if you did not deliberately enable it. Bandai Namco’s June 24, 2024 notice specifically warns that ray tracing may be enabled automatically after loading save data from an earlier game version: Calibration Update 1.12.2.
  2. Restart the game and test the same area. Compare a repeatable location or activity rather than relying on a single busy fight. No official source promises a particular number of additional frames.
  3. If the problem remains, use the targeted fixes below. On PC, investigate mouse-control utilities and graphics drivers. On PlayStation 5, Bandai Namco lists rebuilding the database from Safe Mode as a possible remedy for unstable frame rate. Do not treat a file-integrity check as a general FPS tweak; the 1.16 notes tie it to the “Inappropriate activity detected” message.

Ray tracing: the main visual-versus-performance decision

Ray tracing adds more demanding lighting effects. In the game’s 1.09 notes, the publisher states that turning it on may affect frame rate and resolution. The setting is therefore a trade-off, not a free image-quality upgrade: a sharper or more advanced lighting presentation can come with less consistent performance.

Platform Menu path What to do when frame rate matters
PC System > Graphics or System > Graphics Settings > Ray Tracing Quality/Raytracing Quality Set to Off unless your hardware and visual preference justify it.
PlayStation 5 Game Options > Ray Tracing Disable it when consistency is more important than ray-traced effects.
Xbox Series X Game Options > Ray Tracing Disable it when you are troubleshooting dips.

The labels differ between official notices and can vary by update or language. Look for the equivalent ray-tracing control rather than assuming the wording on an older screenshot is identical to your menu. The 1.09 announcement is available in the Elden Ring / Steam patch notes.

When ray tracing turned itself on

The old-save-data issue is especially plausible if performance changed immediately after importing or loading a save created by an earlier version. You do not need to reset every graphics option first: inspect the ray-tracing toggle, turn it off, save the setting, and restart. If the setting was already off, continue with the other checks instead of repeatedly changing it.

PC troubleshooting, in the order that minimizes guesswork

1. Confirm that your PC meets the general game requirement

Steam’s listed baseline is a starting point, not a promise of smooth play at a particular resolution, quality level, or frame rate. It specifies 12 GB of RAM, an Intel Core i5-8400 or AMD Ryzen 3 3300X processor, an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 with 3 GB or AMD Radeon RX 580 with 4 GB, and 60 GB of storage. The publication date is not stated on the Steam support page. See Steam’s ELDEN RING gameplay or technical issue page for the platform’s requirements and support information.

2. Check whether you are trying to run ray tracing beyond your hardware’s intended tier

The ray-tracing specifications published with update 1.09 are substantially higher than the general requirement. They describe the hardware associated with particular ray-tracing quality targets; they are not FPS tests and do not guarantee a locked result.

Ray tracing minimum (update 1.09, March 23, 2023) Intel Core i5-10600K or AMD Ryzen 5 3600XT 16 GB GeForce RTX 3060 Ti 8 GB or Radeon RX 6700 XT 12 GB 1080p, low quality, low ray tracing

Meeting the first row means your computer is around the game’s general entry requirement; it does not mean it is suitable for high ray tracing. Conversely, the ray-tracing rows describe a much heavier workload and should not be read as a recommendation to buy a particular card.

3. Update the graphics driver, with the date and wording in mind

In a February 25, 2022 support message, Bandai Namco Entertainment Europe wrote: “For the PC version, updating your graphics card drivers to the latest version may significantly improve performance.” That is dated guidance, not a current guarantee for every system. Install the current driver supplied for your GPU, reboot, and retest before attributing a change to a graphics preset. The original message is at Bandai Namco’s performance-issues notice.

4. Temporarily deactivate mouse-control applications

Version 1.16 notes identify third-party applications that control mouse behavior as a possible source of unstable performance on PC and suggest deactivating them. This is a focused diagnostic step, not evidence that every overlay, peripheral utility, or background process causes stutter. Close only the relevant utility, launch the game, and compare the result. If there is no change, restore the application and continue troubleshooting.

5. Change graphics options incrementally

No reviewed official source provides comparative testing of every PC preset across current GPUs. Use a controlled workflow instead of copying a supposedly optimal preset:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Record your current resolution, quality options, and ray-tracing state.
  2. Turn ray tracing off and test a repeatable scene.
  3. If performance is still unstable, lower one available quality option by one step and test again.
  4. Keep changes that improve consistency without an unacceptable visual loss; restore changes that do not help.
  5. If the frame rate is stable, raise one option at a time until you find your own limit.

This method reveals which setting matters on your computer. It also avoids promising that a setting combination tested on another GPU will behave the same way on yours.

Make each test comparable

Use the same character, area and type of movement for every comparison. A quiet corridor and a crowded outdoor encounter do not place the same load on the system, so switching locations between tests can make a change appear more effective than it is. Apply one adjustment, save it, restart if the game requests it, and repeat the route. Write down whether the problem is a low average frame rate, sudden dips, or an image-resolution change; those symptoms can point to different causes.

Test after the game has fully loaded the area, rather than judging the first few seconds after a fast travel or launch. If turning ray tracing off changes nothing, leave it off while you test the next variable. That prevents an unintended setting from masking the effect of a driver update or a mouse-control utility.

Read the hardware tables by scope

The Steam figures describe the general PC game requirement. The two higher tables from Elden Ring Update 1.09 describe ray-tracing targets at 1080p, with separate low and high quality levels. They do not say that every computer between those examples will produce a particular frame rate, nor do they establish that a processor or graphics card upgrade is required. Use them to decide whether ray tracing is a reasonable experiment, not as a buying list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Memory is also scoped differently: the general requirement lists 12 GB of RAM, while both ray-tracing tiers list 16 GB. A system can meet the general memory figure and still be below the publisher’s stated ray-tracing tiers. Storage is listed as 60 GB for the general Steam requirement; it is not a performance score.

PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X: what you can actually change

Ray tracing on consoles

On both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, use Game Options > Ray Tracing. The publisher warns that ray tracing can affect frame rate and resolution, so turning it off is the clearest first test when the image feels less responsive or resolution appears to fluctuate. The cited material does not establish a PC-style collection of quality presets for every console model; do not assume that a menu option available on PC exists on your console.

PlayStation 5 database rebuild

Bandai Namco’s Version 1.16 notes list Rebuild Database from the PlayStation 5’s Safe Mode as a possible way to improve an unstable frame rate. It is a troubleshooting option, not a guaranteed fix or a routine graphics setting. Follow Sony’s Safe Mode instructions for entering the menu, choose the database-rebuild command, and allow the console to finish before launching the game again. The recommendation is recorded in the Version 1.16 patch notes.

Xbox troubleshooting boundaries

The available official notes provide the ray-tracing path for Xbox Series X but do not document an equivalent database-rebuild procedure or a set of console quality sliders. Start with the ray-tracing toggle and the console’s normal system and game-update checks rather than applying PC driver or mouse-utility advice to Xbox.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why console advice should stay platform-specific

Ray tracing is the documented graphics switch on both listed consoles, but the PS5 database instruction is a separate maintenance step. Do not transfer the PS5 Safe Mode procedure to Xbox, and do not expect a PC driver installation or mouse utility to apply to either console. If disabling ray tracing does not change the symptom, use the platform’s ordinary restart and update process and consult current platform support guidance rather than inventing PC-style settings that the console menu does not expose.

Match the symptom to the likely next step

Symptom First check Why this is the appropriate test
Performance became worse after loading an older save on PC Ray Tracing Quality The June 2024 notice describes unintended ray-tracing activation after older save data.
PC frame rate remains unstable with ray tracing off Mouse-control utilities, then graphics driver Version 1.16 names third-party mouse-control applications; the 2022 support notice gives dated driver advice.
PS5 frame rate is unstable Ray Tracing under Game Options; then consider Rebuild Database from Safe Mode These are the console-specific actions identified by the publisher.
“Inappropriate activity detected” appears on PC Verify game-file integrity The 1.16 notes connect this instruction to that message, not to general FPS improvement.
You want higher image quality without knowing your GPU’s limit Leave ray tracing off initially and raise one quality option at a time No official comparative benchmark establishes one universal best preset.

Common mistakes when chasing more FPS

  • Using ray-tracing requirements as ordinary requirements. The RTX 3060 Ti/RX 6700 XT and RTX 3070 Ti/RX 6900 XT specifications are specifically for ray-tracing targets published with update 1.09. They are not replacements for the general Steam baseline.
  • Assuming a minimum specification guarantees smooth play. A requirement lists a supported hardware floor; it does not define a guaranteed frame rate, resolution, or quality setting.
  • Changing many settings at once. If ray tracing, resolution, shadows, and several other options change together, you cannot tell which adjustment helped.
  • Buying hardware as the first response. The official material supports checking the toggle, drivers, and the named mouse-control conflict. It does not establish that a purchase is necessary or that a particular upgrade fixes every stutter.
  • Treating a console database rebuild as a universal cure. The PS5 instruction is a possible improvement in the 1.16 notes, not a guaranteed result and not an Xbox procedure.
  • Expecting a fixed frame-rate increase. No independent benchmark statistic is established here, so claims such as “this setting adds 20 FPS” would not be supported.
  • Copying menu labels from an old guide. Bandai Namco has used both “Raytracing Quality” and “Ray Tracing Quality,” and the surrounding menu has appeared as “Graphics” or “Graphics Settings.” Search for the equivalent control in your current language and patch rather than concluding that the option is missing.
  • Confusing a visual change with a performance fix. Because ray tracing can affect both resolution and frame rate, an image that looks softer or sharper is not by itself proof that the underlying frame pacing improved. Judge responsiveness and repeatable movement as well as screenshot quality.

Choose settings by priority

Your priority Starting choice Next action
Most consistent frame delivery Ray tracing off Test a repeatable scene; lower one quality option only if instability remains.
Ray-traced lighting is the priority Enable ray tracing only after comparing your hardware with the 1.09 ray-tracing specifications Use the lower ray-tracing target first and accept that frame rate or resolution may be affected.
Older or borderline PC hardware Stay within the general game requirement and keep ray tracing off Update the driver and diagnose utilities before attempting higher quality.
PS5 troubleshooting Check Game Options > Ray Tracing If instability persists, consider the 1.16 Safe Mode database-rebuild step.
Xbox Series X troubleshooting Check Game Options > Ray Tracing Use the console’s normal update and restart process; the cited notes do not document PC-style quality controls.

A practical checklist before you play

  • Identify whether you are changing PC, PS5, or Xbox Series X settings.
  • On PC, inspect the ray-tracing setting even if you never enabled it yourself.
  • Compare your hardware with the general requirement or the separate ray-tracing specification, depending on your goal.
  • Install the current graphics driver and restart the computer.
  • Temporarily deactivate a third-party mouse-control application if one is running.
  • Change one graphics option at a time and test the same type of scene.
  • On PS5, treat Rebuild Database as a possible troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed performance mode.
  • Use file-integrity verification for the specific “Inappropriate activity detected” issue, not as a generic FPS booster.

The dependable order is simple: verify ray tracing, match the correct hardware tier, apply the platform-specific fix, and then tune quality incrementally. That preserves as much visual quality as your own system can sustain without turning an untested preset into a promise.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I improve Elden Ring FPS on PC first?

Open System > Graphics (or Graphics Settings) and check Ray Tracing Quality. If it is on unexpectedly, turn it off, restart the game and repeat the same test area. If instability remains, temporarily deactivate a third-party application that controls mouse behavior and install the current graphics driver. Change other quality options one at a time; no official source guarantees a specific FPS increase.

Why is Elden Ring running poorly after I loaded an older save?

Bandai Namco’s June 24, 2024 notice describes a PC issue in which ray tracing could become enabled after older save data was loaded. Check the ray-tracing control even if you never selected it. Disable it, save the setting and restart, then compare the same scene. If it was already off, move on to the other targeted checks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I turn ray tracing off in Elden Ring?

Turn it off when consistent frame delivery matters more than ray-traced lighting, especially on hardware below the ray-tracing specifications published with Update 1.09. The publisher warns that ray tracing can affect both frame rate and resolution. You can re-enable it later and test one repeatable area if your system meets the stated 1080p low- or high-quality tier.

What PC specs does Elden Ring require?

Steam lists 12 GB of RAM, an Intel Core i5-8400 or AMD Ryzen 3 3300X, a GTX 1060 3 GB or Radeon RX 580 4 GB, and 60 GB of storage for the general PC requirement. Ray tracing has separate, higher specifications: the March 23, 2023 Update 1.09 minimum lists 16 GB, an i5-10600K or Ryzen 5 3600XT and an RTX 3060 Ti 8 GB or RX 6700 XT 12 GB for 1080p low quality/low ray tracing. The recommended RT tier lists an i7-10700K or Ryzen 7 3800XT, 16 GB and an RTX 3070 Ti 8 GB or RX 6900 XT 16 GB for 1080p high quality/high ray tracing. None of these figures guarantees a particular frame rate.

Can rebuilding the PS5 database improve Elden Ring performance?

Bandai Namco’s Version 1.16 notes list Rebuild Database from the PS5 Safe Mode as a possible improvement for an unstable frame rate. It is not guaranteed and is not a graphics preset. Follow Sony’s Safe Mode procedure and let the operation finish before testing the game again. The cited notes do not establish an equivalent Xbox procedure.

Should I verify game files to get more FPS?

No. Version 1.16 associates verifying game-file integrity with the “Inappropriate activity detected” message. It is not documented as a general FPS fix. For ordinary performance instability, check ray tracing, diagnose the named mouse-control utility conflict, update the graphics driver on PC, and adjust settings incrementally.

The Bottom Line

For a steadier Elden Ring frame rate, check ray tracing before changing anything else. Match your PC with the general or ray-tracing-specific requirements, use the dated driver and mouse-utility troubleshooting steps where applicable, and keep console instructions platform-specific. Test one change at a time; the publisher provides trade-offs and troubleshooting options, not a universal preset or guaranteed FPS number.
