The claimed discount is not verified: the inspected U.S. Steam listing showed Shadow of the Erdtree for $39.99 with no discount displayed. That is a captured list price, not confirmation of a current sale; prices and offers vary by storefront, region, and time. Check your platform’s live regional listing for the final price and sale end date before buying. The expansion requires the Elden Ring base game on the same platform, and its official access checklist requires defeating Starscourge Radahn and Mohg, Lord of Blood.
Is Shadow of the Erdtree on sale?
The available U.S. Steam listing showed the standalone expansion at $39.99 and did not display a discount. That listing does not verify the discount named in the headline, or establish a sale price or end date on another platform or in another region. Because store prices change, confirm the live listing for your platform and region before purchasing.

The same captured Steam result listed Elden Ring at $59.99 and the combined Shadow of the Erdtree Edition at $79.99. These are captured U.S. list prices, not sale quotes or guaranteed current prices. Steam’s expansion listing and edition information should be checked directly for current availability and pricing.

Yes. Shadow of the Erdtree is an expansion, not a standalone game, and requires the base game on the applicable platform. Steam explicitly lists that requirement. If you do not already own Elden Ring, check that the edition you are considering includes both the base game and expansion; a listing for the DLC alone will not supply the base game.

Which edition should you buy?
Choose based on whether you own the base game and which platform you play on. Steam and PlayStation list a combined edition containing the base game and expansion. Bandai Namco lists the expansion for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Steam. Xbox supports Smart Delivery across Xbox One and Series consoles, according to the publisher’s product details.
| What you need | What to look for | Important check |
|---|---|---|
| You already own Elden Ring | The standalone Shadow of the Erdtree expansion for the same platform | The expansion requires the base game on that platform. |
| You do not own Elden Ring | A combined edition containing the base game and expansion | Steam and PlayStation list a combined edition; confirm the contents of the exact regional listing before purchase. |
| You play on Xbox | The Xbox expansion or a compatible combined edition | Bandai Namco lists Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S support and Smart Delivery compatibility. |
Online console-play requirements can differ by platform; check the applicable storefront for those terms. Store editions, platform availability, and prices can also vary by region.
How do you access Shadow of the Erdtree?
The official PlayStation access instructions give two boss requirements and an in-game interaction. Use this checklist:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Own and install the expansion for the same platform as your base game.
- Defeat Starscourge Radahn.
- Defeat Mohg, Lord of Blood.
- Travel to Mohg’s boss area and interact with the withered arm emerging from the cocoon.
The PlayStation instructions describe touching the withered arm to begin the new chapter. The official wording on Steam describes Shadow of the Erdtree as “an expansion to ELDEN RING, the 2022 Game of the Year.”
What should an NG+ player know before starting?
The official access instructions establish the boss gates and the cocoon interaction, but do not specify whether New Game Plus changes the DLC’s difficulty, what character level or build is ideal, or whether starting a new journey resets either boss prerequisite. Do not treat a particular level as an official readiness threshold, or assume that NG+ either blocks or guarantees access.
For your current save, verify whether both required bosses have been defeated in the journey you are playing, then check the cocoon interaction in Mohg’s area. The available official instructions do not settle how NG+ affects prerequisite tracking, so if the arm does not offer entry, recheck the boss requirements and confirm the expansion is installed for the correct platform.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is the Tarnished Pack, and is it the expansion?
No. Bandai Namco Europe announced on 28 August 2026 that ELDEN RING Tarnished Edition arrived on Nintendo Switch 2 with the base game and Shadow of the Erdtree, while new content was made available to existing players on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. The separate Tarnished Pack adds new classes, gear, and Torrent appearance customization; Steam’s announcement specifies two starting classes and new armor. It is an add-on, not a replacement for buying the expansion.
Bandai Namco’s announcement also described the game as having received more than 400 Game of the Year nominations; that is a nominations figure, not a count of awards won.
