Somber Smithing Stones are separate from ordinary Smithing Stones, and a compatible weapon upgrade consumes the required stone. Then check Recent Items, your inventory and storage. Official patch notes document an inventory display fix, but do not confirm a general bug that makes Somber Smithing Stones disappear.
Check the stone name and tier
Read the full item name and number from the pickup or purchase. A Smithing Stone [n] and a Somber Smithing Stone [n] are different materials: ordinary armaments use regular Smithing Stones, while special armaments use the Somber series. Check the weapon’s next upgrade requirement against the exact stone you expected to receive. The Somber Smithing Stone reference lists the Somber series as material for reinforcing special armaments.

See whether an upgrade used it
Somber stones are consumed as a special armament is upgraded through successive tiers, up to +10. If the weapon has already advanced through the tier you were checking, the stone may have been used for that upgrade rather than disappearing. The item reference describes Somber Smithing Stone [1] as reinforcing a special armament to +1; check the weapon’s current level and upgrade history against the tier you expected to remain.
Check inventory views before treating it as missing
- Open Recent Items. Version 1.12 added a Recent Items tab to the inventory. Look there for the stone if you just picked it up or bought it.
- Check the appropriate inventory section. Search for the exact Somber stone tier, not just the word “Smithing.” Also check storage if you may have transferred the item.
- Confirm the transaction completed. If you bought the stone, verify that the purchase went through; the sources do not establish a universal recovery method for an item that failed to appear.
Bandai Namco’s version 1.12 patch notes also document a fix for a bug in which item names and the cursor were not displayed correctly in the inventory under certain circumstances. The notes do not identify Somber Smithing Stones as affected, so checking the tab and display is a sensible diagnostic step, not proof that a display bug caused your case.

If the issue happened after starting New Game Plus
Stone carryover and Bell Bearing shop stock are separate. A community New Game Plus reference lists Somber Smithing Stones among items that carry into a new journey, and says a Bell Bearing must have been given to the Twin Maiden Husks for its shop unlock to persist. Bandai Namco’s version 1.05 patch notes say the liberated status of specified Bell Bearings, including the Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing, carries over when transacting with the Twin Maiden Husks. If you expected to buy a stone after beginning a new journey, check whether you turned in the bearing; the shop unlock is not the same thing as the stone itself.

Bandai Namco’s version 1.17 patch notes, published August 27, 2026, do not mention a fix for Somber Smithing Stones disappearing from inventory. Individual player posts use similar wording, but they do not establish how often the symptom occurs, its cause, which platforms are affected or a reliable recovery method. The available evidence therefore does not support diagnosing save corruption or promising that a particular recovery step will restore a missing stone.

If the stone is still unaccounted for after checking its tier, upgrades, inventory views, storage and purchase context, record your platform, game version, stone tier, how you acquired it and what you did immediately before noticing it was missing. Those details can help distinguish a display or transaction question from an item being consumed by an upgrade.
