If you see a red icon beneath your HP bar, check whether you are carrying Baldachin’s Blessing: holding the ordinary version lowers maximum HP by 5%. Use it to remove that penalty; the item then grants a brief combat buff. That familiar effect is only one case, though. Elden Ring uses “debuff” for a narrower set of enemy-targeting effects, while its wider status-effect system includes harmful and beneficial effects on players and NPCs.
What counts as a debuff in Elden Ring?
Players often call any harmful effect a debuff, but the game’s mechanics are broader than that label. The debuff reference groups effects that reduce defenses or inhibit offense into five categories. A separate status-effects reference describes effects that can be positive or negative and can affect players and NPCs. Status buildup accumulates through repeated application and triggers when its meter fills.

For the debuff categories other than Unique Debuffs, the reference says only one effect in a category can be active at a time; applying a different effect in that category replaces the earlier one. This is a rule about those categorized debuffs, not a universal rule for every ailment or negative icon.
The five debuff categories
- Power Shred: lowers defenses. Acid Spraymist and Greyoll’s Roar are examples.
- Destined Death: a separate category of effects.
- Flask Disable: effects that interfere with flask use.
- Oil: an effect category associated with oil.
- Unique Debuffs: individual effects that do not follow the one-per-category limit; Black Blade is an example.
The category names and examples come from the community-maintained reference, which also warns that some effects use PvP values in PvE. Treat exact values as mode- and version-sensitive rather than applying them to every situation.

Why Baldachin’s Blessing lowers your maximum HP
Fia gives the ordinary Baldachin’s Blessing when you accept her embrace. While you carry it, your maximum HP is reduced by 5%. The penalty is tied to holding the item: using the blessing removes it and consumes the item’s effect for a temporary buff.
What using the ordinary blessing does
The item reference lists a 10 FP cost and a 15-second duration. Its listed effects are +35% physical damage negation, 34% less incoming poise damage, and prevention of light stagger. The reference gives a +10% physical-damage-negation figure against other players. These are reference values, not a guarantee of identical results across modes or patches: Bandai Namco’s Version 1.12 notes say the effects of both Baldachin’s Blessing and Radiant Baldachin’s Blessing were decreased in PvP.
If you want the missing HP back, use the ordinary blessing and allow its temporary effect to run its course. If you are considering it for a fight, weigh the 10 FP cost and short duration against the defensive and poise benefits.
How Radiant Baldachin’s Blessing differs
Radiant Baldachin’s Blessing is a separate item, obtained later in Fia’s questline after giving her the Cursemark of Death. The item reference says it is limited to one per Journey. Unlike the ordinary blessing, carrying it does not reduce maximum HP.
| Item | Listed duration | FP cost | Listed poise effect | HP penalty while held |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Baldachin’s Blessing | 15 seconds | 10 FP | 34% less incoming poise damage; prevents light stagger | 5% lower maximum HP |
| Radiant Baldachin’s Blessing | 70 seconds | 20 FP | 45% less incoming poise damage; prevents light stagger | None |
Both item references list +35% physical damage negation and +10% against other players. Bandai Namco’s Version 1.12 patch notes, published June 20, 2024, record a PvP decrease to both blessings’ effects, so the reference figures should not be treated as mode-independent or unchanging.

What a status icon can—and cannot—tell you
The HUD reference says a corresponding icon appears while a special effect is active. An icon is a clue that an effect is in play, but the available references do not establish a complete official icon-by-icon legend. A red HP icon associated with Fia’s blessing is a familiar example, not a reliable key for identifying every negative effect.
To identify an unfamiliar icon, look at what changed, what you were carrying or using, and what happened immediately before it appeared. Check the specific item or status description instead of assuming that every negative icon is the same kind of debuff. The community discussion titled “What debuff is this?” reflects the common player question, but its replies are not an authoritative mechanics reference: Reddit discussion.
How to remove negative effects
There is no single cure to recommend for every negative icon. The status-effects reference lists Law of Regression and the Needle Piercer skill as broad options for removing status effects and other effects, but individual ailments also have their own remedies. Identify the effect first, then choose a removal method that applies to it.

- For the ordinary Baldachin’s Blessing HP penalty: use the item you are carrying; the HP reduction is tied to holding it.
- For a known ailment or effect: check its specific remedy rather than assuming a general cleanse will work.
- For an unidentified icon: investigate its source before spending FP or using a limited item.
Bandai Namco’s Version 1.12 notes also state that after madness and/or sleep status effects, buildup is halted for a short period. That note concerns buildup after those effects; it is not a general cure for all icons or conditions.
How complete is an “all temporary debuffs” list?
The published references support the five debuff categories, selected examples, and several removal options, but they do not establish a current exhaustive list of every effect, duration, HUD icon, and remedy across the base game and expansion. The categories above are therefore a guide to the distinction and common cases, not a complete icon catalog. Exact effect values should be checked with PvE or PvP context and the relevant game version.
