This ranked list balances those different jobs; it is not a claim that one spell is best for every character. The first eight picks follow a 2026 independent ranking, while the remaining entries round out the list with support and damage options identified by other guides. Tarnished Forge’s ranking and Windows Central’s version 1.16 guide use different criteria, so treat this as a practical shortlist rather than an official tier list.
How this ranking works
Incantations are a broad toolkit, not just projectile attacks. They can deal damage, apply status, heal, cleanse conditions, or buff the caster and allies. This list leans toward PvE and hybrid Faith builds, and ranks spells for their combined usefulness across roles rather than raw damage alone. A boss-specific spell can outperform a general-purpose pick in the right fight; PvP, where landing a cast and avoiding interruption matter differently, can change the order.
The comparison considers role coverage, target fit, cast commitment, range, FP and stat demands, memory-slot cost, and access to the spell. Tarnished Forge says its 2026 ranking weighs damage, FP efficiency, utility, boss value, cast speed, range, requirements, and acquisition timing. Windows Central’s August 2025 list emphasizes efficiency, ease of landing, and PvP dodge difficulty. Neither is an official game ranking.
Incantations are cast with sacred seals and are primarily associated with Faith. Schools include Erdtree and Two Fingers, Golden Order, Dragon Cult, Dragon Communion, Fire Monks and Giants’ Flame, blood, rot, bestial, Frenzied Flame, and death-related magic. Dragon Communion spells also involve Arcane. Sorceries are a separate category generally associated with Intelligence and staves. Golden Vow
A strong default buff for a Faith character who wants to improve both attack and defense for themselves and nearby allies. Tarnished Forge ranks it as its best overall pick. Its reported requirements are 25 Faith and 47 FP; those figures come from that guide, so check the current game if exact values matter to your build. The main trade-off is opportunity cost: the Faith investment and memory slot need to earn their place in your setup.

Flame, Grant Me Strength
A short-duration body buff suited to builds that can use its physical- and fire-damage boost. It can complement Golden Vow according to Tarnished Forge, but it is not a universal damage upgrade: its profile needs to match the attacks you actually use. The guide reports 15 Faith and 28 FP.

Ancient Dragons’ Lightning Strike
A high-upside lightning attack against large enemies. Its repeated strikes can connect on a broad target, making it a compelling boss option when there is time and space to commit to the cast. It is less dependable against small or mobile enemies, where many strikes may miss. Tarnished Forge reports 26 Faith and 27 FP.

Lightning Spear
A straightforward ranged lightning spell for regular combat and safer damage opportunities. Its appeal is reliability and a lower listed Faith requirement than Knight’s Lightning Spear, making it a more accessible choice for many Faith builds. Tarnished Forge describes it as an everyday damage option.

Rotten Breath
A Dragon Communion breath attack that can inflict Scarlet Rot on susceptible targets. It is valuable when a target can be affected and you have a safe opening, but the casting commitment can be dangerous under pressure. Do not assume the status works on every enemy. The official patch notes also document a PvP adjustment to the hit reaction from Rotten Breath and Ekzykes’s Decay; that does not establish a general PvE power change.

Catch Flame
A fast, close-range fire attack with a low listed Faith requirement. It suits close-range punishes and quick follow-ups, not encounters where keeping distance is the priority. Tarnished Forge includes it among its top picks for its speed and damage in that role.

Knight’s Lightning Spear
A Shadow of the Erdtree lightning option for dedicated DLC builds. Tarnished Forge presents it as an upgrade path for lightning-focused characters, with a higher Faith requirement than Lightning Spear. Its place here reflects that specialization; it is not the more accessible choice for a character without the expansion or the required stats.

Pest-Thread Spears
A DLC spell whose multi-hit potential makes it especially attractive against large bosses. As with Ancient Dragons’ Lightning Strike, target size and the ability to land repeated hits are central to its value. It is a specialist pick, not a universally superior replacement for a ranged spell.

Black Flame
A ranged fire option included in Windows Central’s S tier. It is a useful candidate if you want a damage spell outside the lightning and Dragon Communion choices above. Requirements, acquisition details, and exact current performance are not established here, so consult an up-to-date in-game or spell reference before planning a build around them.

Black Blade
A late-game option noted by Windows Central for its health-reduction effect. That guide says acquiring it requires defeating Maliketh and trading his Remembrance. Its late access makes it a poor early-build plan, even if its effect suits a later character.

Erdtree Heal
An area heal for the caster and allies, giving a group-oriented character a reason to spend a slot on support instead of another attack. Its high resource demands make it less suited to every loadout. Windows Central reports 42 Faith and 65 FP in its August 2025 guide; those are guide-reported values from before version 1.17.

Flame, Cleanse Me
A practical utility spell for curing poison and Scarlet Rot. It has little to offer as a damage pick, but can be more useful than one in exploration or an encounter where those status effects are the main problem. Keep it available when the situation warrants the slot.

Bestial Sling
A quick, inexpensive short-range projectile for chip damage and interrupting opportunities. Tarnished Forge highlights it as a low-Faith ranged tool. Its short reach limits its usefulness as a safe ranged answer, but its speed can fill a different role from slower, higher-commitment casts.

Heal From Afar
A Shadow of the Erdtree healing option included in Windows Central’s S tier. Consider it for a support-oriented DLC build, but choose a heal based on how you need to deliver it and who needs the recovery; one spell does not automatically replace every other healing option.

Giantsflame Take Thee
A heavy fire-damage choice included in Windows Central’s S tier. It is most at home in a fire-oriented build with safe openings for a committed cast. If an enemy is mobile or constantly pressuring you, a quicker option may be more dependable.
Choose by the job you need done
- For a general buff: Golden Vow is the broadest starting point; add Flame, Grant Me Strength when its damage profile fits your attacks.
- For ranged damage: Lightning Spear is the practical everyday choice; consider Black Flame or Bestial Sling for different damage and speed profiles.
- For large bosses: Ancient Dragons’ Lightning Strike and Pest-Thread Spears can benefit from repeated hits on a large target, but are not equally reliable against smaller enemies.
- For status pressure: Rotten Breath is an option against susceptible targets when you can safely complete the cast.
- For support and survival: Erdtree Heal and Heal From Afar serve healing roles, while Flame, Cleanse Me addresses poison and Scarlet Rot.
- For close-range fire: Catch Flame favors quick punishes; Giantsflame Take Thee is the higher-commitment damage choice.
Before assigning a memory slot, compare the spell’s Faith and Arcane requirements, FP cost, casting window, and access point with what your character can afford. A powerful spell that leaves too little FP for the rest of a fight, or consumes a slot needed for healing or a buff, may be a worse fit than a less spectacular option.
What version 1.17 changes—and what it does not establish
Bandai Namco Europe’s official version 1.17 patch notes, published August 27, 2026, list App Ver. 1.17 and Regulation Ver. 1.17. They say Feather of the Divine Bird and Rain of Fire received increased power, and O, Flame! received expanded attack range. For PvP, Rugalea’s Roar power was reduced, while Rotten Breath and Ekzykes’s Decay cause less time unable to move from hit reactions. The notes do not say that every spell on this list changed, nor do they establish a new universal ranking.
Because rankings depend on role and context, use the list as a shortlist for choosing spells, not as a substitute for checking your build or the encounter. The official Elden Ring site is the source for the game’s platform and edition information; availability of DLC-specific picks depends on access to Shadow of the Erdtree.
