Tree Sentinel is the name of several mounted bosses in Elden Ring, not just the intimidating enemy near the start of Limgrave. The early Limgrave fight is optional: you can leave the road, continue toward the Church of Elleh, and return later. Other Tree Sentinel encounters include a pair in Altus Plateau and another pair in Scaduview; the similarly named Draconic Tree Sentinel is a separate boss.
Where do you find the Tree Sentinel?
The name covers encounters in multiple regions. Their number, equipment, and reported rewards differ, so check the location before following advice or expecting a particular drop.

|---|---|---|
| Limgrave, near the First Step and the path to the Church of Elleh | One Tree Sentinel | Golden Halberd and 3,200 runes, according to the Fextralife Tree Sentinel reference. It lists 2,889 HP; treat that as a reference value, not an independently verified figure. |
| Altus Plateau, near the gate to the Capital Outskirts | Two enemies with separate health bars: one carries a halberd and greatshield; the other carries a halberd and Sentry’s Torch | The reference reports shared encounter rewards for defeating both. The retrieved source does not establish the reward details here. |
| Scaduview, in the Hinterlands | A pair: one wields a halberd and shield, the other a torch | Not stated in the cited reference. |
The Limgrave location and rewards are also covered by GamesRadar’s Tree Sentinel guide. These are guide/reference values, not official game documentation.
How do you beat the Limgrave Tree Sentinel?
If the fight is too difficult, you do not have to win it to continue. The encounter is avoidable: leave the road around the Sentinel and make your way to the Church of Elleh. You can return when you are better equipped or more comfortable with the fight. A guide recommendation to upgrade a weapon to at least +2 is advice, not a game requirement.
#1 Best Overall
- Collaborating with George R.R. Martin to create the ELDEN RING mythos has been a genuinely delightful experience and a source of wonderful inspiration. The team is working hard to ensure that the world of ELDEN RING will be a fascinating place for players to explore, filled with peril and wonder from its furthest reaches to its lowest depths. This is a FromSoftware title through and through, rich in fantasy and RPG action. We sincerely hope you look forward to it.
- Building the world of ELDEN RING with Miyazaki-san and his team was a treat! The graphics, mythos, and action-RPG gameplay will deliver an unforgettable experience. I can’t wait for people to see what ELDEN RING has in store for them.” Said George R.R. Martin.
Fight now or come back later?
- Go around: Choose this if the Sentinel is blocking your progress or costing you repeated attempts. The guide describes the encounter as optional and avoidable by staying off the path.
- Return later: This lets you approach the fight on your own terms rather than treating it as a progression gate.
- Fight for the reward: The Limgrave encounter’s reported reward is the Golden Halberd and 3,200 runes. The reward may make the detour worthwhile if you can defeat the boss.
On foot or mounted?
The available guides do not establish a definitive best strategy, build, or whether fighting on foot or horseback is superior. Choose the approach that suits your control and movement preferences; do not treat either as a guaranteed shortcut.
What does the Limgrave Tree Sentinel drop?
The Limgrave Tree Sentinel is reported to drop the Golden Halberd and 3,200 runes. GamesRadar reports the weapon’s requirements as 30 Strength, 14 Dexterity, and 12 Faith. Those figures are guide-reported requirements rather than independently confirmed current-version data, so check the weapon’s in-game description before building around them.

Is Draconic Tree Sentinel the same boss?
No. Draconic Tree Sentinel is a distinct named variant, not another name for the Limgrave Tree Sentinel. Reference listings place Draconic encounters in the Capital Outskirts and Crumbling Farum Azula, and report different rewards: Dragonclaw Shield and Dragon Greatclaw for one encounter, and a Malformed Dragon Set for the other. Do not expect those items from the ordinary Tree Sentinel fights.
