Elden Ring vs. Soulslike MMOs: How the Multiplayer Experience Differs

Short answer: Elden Ring is a primarily solo action RPG in which other players are briefly summoned into a host’s world for help, duels, invasions, or asynchronous interactions. It is not a persistent-world MMO. Elden Ring Nightreign, a separate game in the same universe, is much closer to a multiplayer-first structure: players queue for discrete expeditions, choose solo or co-op play, and fight through a changing run that ends with a major boss encounter. The practical differences are persistence, party size, matchmaking, session boundaries, and whether player-versus-player combat is part of the core loop.

What the comparison actually means

“Soulslike MMO” is a broad player label rather than a single official category. The available official descriptions support a focused comparison between Elden Ring and Elden Ring Nightreign, not a survey of every game that has been called a Soulslike MMO.

In the base Elden Ring, you progress through an individual character’s world. Multiplayer is layered onto that world through summon signs, summoning pools, invasions, duels, hunter rescues, messages, bloodstains, and phantoms. A guest visits a host’s session for a bounded purpose and then returns to the guest’s own game.

Nightreign is a standalone multiplayer co-op action-survival game set in the Elden Ring universe. Its basic unit is an expedition rather than a section of one player’s persistent campaign. You select solo or cooperative play, match into a run, explore and fight through a changing map and day-night cycle, and work toward a final Nightlord encounter. That makes it more session-based and matchmaking-driven, but it still should not automatically be described as a traditional MMO with a shared, always-populated world.

Core multiplayer structure

Axis Elden Ring Nightreign
Basic unit of play A host’s individual world with summoned visitors A discrete expedition selected for solo or co-op play
Co-op scale Up to two cooperative guests, for up to four players in the online session described by the manual Deep of Night rules allow one to three expedition players
Persistence The host’s campaign is the progression anchor; guests return to their own worlds Runs are self-contained expeditions; the matchmaking host’s world state affects teammates’ rewards
How players meet Summon signs, summoning pools, eligible-world matching, passwords, and hunter systems Expedition matchmaking, with passwords available for friends
PvP Invasions, hostile summon signs, arranged duels, and hunter rescue The cited official material emphasizes cooperative PvE; it does not establish a PvP mode
Asynchronous contact Messages, bloodstains, phantoms, and summon signs Grey movement echoes and red death echoes that can leave equipment

The table captures the most important distinction: Elden Ring adds multiplayer to a solo campaign, while Nightreign organizes the game around repeatable multiplayer expeditions.

How co-op works in Elden Ring

1. Open the host’s world

The player who wants help is the host. The host uses a multiplayer remedy to reveal summon signs in the area, or interacts with a summoning pool when one is available. A friend can place a summon sign, and the host selects it to invite that player into the current world. The official guidance indicates that players should be in approximately the same area to connect.

A password helps friends find one another and can prioritize signs from people using the same group password. It does not convert the campaign into a shared save, remove normal session boundaries, or guarantee safety from invasions when co-op is active.

2. Stay within the guest limit

The host can summon at most two cooperative guests. This is a small party, not an MMO raid group. The online session described in the manual can reach four players total when hostile players or other multiplayer roles are included, but only two of those places are cooperative guest slots.

3. Move through a restricted version of the host’s world

Guests help the host explore, fight enemies, and reach an objective. Several campaign conveniences are restricted while guests are present: the guide specifically notes that Torrent cannot be used and fast travel is unavailable. The result feels like a tactical escort through a selected area rather than a second player permanently inhabiting the host’s save.

4. End the session when its purpose is complete

A co-op visit can end when the host or a guest dies, a connection fails, someone uses the session-ending item, or a boss or mini-boss objective is completed. Guests then return to their own worlds. Progress is therefore centered on the host’s campaign; helping a friend defeat a boss does not make the entire completed area appear in the helper’s save.

What Elden Ring multiplayer adds beyond co-op

Invasions

Elden Ring has an adversarial layer. Invasions target an eligible host, generally when the host has opened the world through co-op. The game also provides Taunter’s Tongue as an additional way to invite invasions. A password for friends is not an immunity switch: ordinary co-op can carry invasion risk.

Duels and hostile summon signs

Players can arrange competitive encounters through hostile summon signs rather than relying on an unwanted invasion. This gives the multiplayer system two distinct moods: cooperative progression with possible danger, and deliberately chosen player-versus-player fights.

Hunters and rescue play

A host under invasion can call for hunters, allowing another player to answer a request for help. That rescue role is different from a normal co-op guest who was invited to clear an area, and it is one reason Elden Ring multiplayer feels more like a set of overlapping systems than a single party queue.

Asynchronous contact

You can encounter messages, bloodstains, and translucent phantoms from players who are not in your live session. Summon signs similarly advertise a possible connection without placing the author in your world until you accept. Group passwords can prioritize traces and signs from people using the same group, but these are still asynchronous or matchmaking signals, not proof that everyone occupies one persistent world together.

How Nightreign changes the multiplayer loop

Choose an expedition before you start

Nightreign presents solo and cooperative play as expedition choices. Solo play can be online or offline, while co-op requires an internet connection. Friends can use a matchmaking password, but the session is still an expedition with a defined start and finish rather than a permanently shared campaign.

Explore a changing map on a fixed run structure

The publisher describes changing maps, a three-day-and-night cycle, exploration and combat decisions, and boss encounters that culminate in a Nightlord fight. This structure changes what “helping a friend” means. You are not simply entering another player’s existing legacy dungeon; you are joining a run whose route, time pressure, and final confrontation shape the whole party’s decisions.

Understand the host’s effect on rewards

The official starter guide says the matchmaking host’s world state influences rewards received by teammates. That makes the host more than a connection owner: the host’s state can affect what other members earn from the expedition. Anyone joining a friend should therefore treat host selection as a progression consideration, not just a way to fill an empty slot.

Expect asynchronous echoes inside the expedition format

Nightreign retains a Soulslike sense of indirect contact. Grey phantoms reenact active players’ movement, while red phantoms represent players who died and can leave equipment behind. These echoes preserve the feeling that other runs are happening around you without turning the map into a continuously shared MMO zone.

Deep of Night: the clearest matchmaking-heavy example

Deep of Night demonstrates how far Nightreign can move toward a structured multiplayer ladder, but its rules are specific to that mode and may change with patches.

  • It is online-only.
  • Expeditions accommodate one to three players.
  • Matchmaking generally pairs players with similar depth ratings.
  • Wins and losses change those ratings.
  • Leaving or disconnecting can trigger a penalty.
  • The penalty is removed if the player immediately returns to the expedition.

Do not apply these restrictions to every Nightreign mode. They describe Deep of Night’s rating and connection rules, not a universal rule for all expeditions. Likewise, a mode with ratings and matchmaking is still not necessarily an MMO: the key question is whether players share a persistent world, and Deep of Night remains organized around separate runs.

Is Nightreign more like an MMO?

It is more MMO-like than base Elden Ring in its reliance on matchmaking, party formation, and repeatable group sessions. It is not an MMO in the strongest traditional sense because the cited official descriptions do not present a permanently populated shared world in which large numbers of players live together across one continuous campaign.

A useful test is to ask four questions:

  1. Does the world persist independently of one party? Elden Ring uses the host’s world; Nightreign uses an expedition run.
  2. Can a group remain together indefinitely across objectives? Elden Ring ends a guest session at death, disconnection, dismissal, or boss and mini-boss resolution. Nightreign ends when the expedition ends.
  3. Is the party assembled through a standing population queue? Elden Ring primarily uses signs, pools, and invitations. Nightreign foregrounds expedition matchmaking.
  4. Is competitive combat part of the documented core? Invasions and duels are explicit in Elden Ring. The cited Nightreign material establishes co-op PvE and does not establish a comparable PvP mode.

On those tests, Nightreign is a multiplayer-centered, session-based survival action game rather than a conventional persistent-world MMO.

Which game fits your group?

Choose Elden Ring co-op if you want campaign help

  • You want one player to lead progression through a particular area or boss.
  • You enjoy short, high-stakes sessions where death or objective completion sends guests home.
  • You want the possibility of invasions, arranged duels, or hunter rescue.
  • You prefer deciding when to summon rather than joining a standing expedition queue.

Choose Nightreign if you want the run itself to be cooperative

  • You want matchmaking to be part of the game’s main structure.
  • You enjoy adapting to a changing map, a day-night cycle, and a shared route toward a final Nightlord fight.
  • You want a defined expedition that can be played solo or with a small party.
  • You are interested in mode-specific progression rules such as Deep of Night depth ratings.

Use both when your group wants different kinds of play

The games solve different social problems. Base Elden Ring is ideal when a friend needs a hand with a troublesome stretch of their personal campaign. Nightreign is better when the group wants to start together, make run-wide decisions together, and finish a self-contained expedition together. Neither design is a drop-in replacement for the other.

Practical questions about playing with friends

How many friends can join me in Elden Ring?

You can summon up to two cooperative guests into your world. The online session described in the manual can include up to four players total when other multiplayer roles are counted, but the cooperative guest limit remains two.

Does co-op progress carry over?

Guests return to their own worlds when the session ends. The host’s world is the progression anchor, so defeating a boss in a friend’s session does not reproduce that entire campaign victory in your save. You may need to repeat areas or objectives in your own world.

Can I be invaded while playing with a friend?

Yes. Co-op generally makes a host eligible for invasions, and Taunter’s Tongue can invite additional invasion activity. A co-op password helps friends connect and prioritizes their signs; it does not remove the normal invasion system.

Can Nightreign be played alone?

Yes. The starter guide allows solo play online or offline. Co-op play requires an internet connection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Nightreign use matchmaking passwords?

Yes. Players can use a password to play with friends. The expedition remains a discrete run, and the host’s world state can influence rewards received by teammates.

Are current queues or player counts known?

No reliable population statistic or independently measured queue-time study is established by the cited material. Matchmaking can vary by platform, region, time of day, mode, rating or depth, and character or build conditions. Treat anecdotal reports about whether “anyone is still playing” as individual experiences, not as a current population measurement.

Version and availability cautions

Official pages consulted for this comparison were accessed on October 13, 2026. The official Nightreign page displayed a March 31, 2026 hotfix among its latest news at that time; that display is not proof that no later update exists. Mode rules, balance, edition contents, and store availability can change, and patches can alter Elden Ring multiplayer behavior. Check the current in-game notices and official platform listing before relying on a specific rule or buying an edition.

Nightreign is listed for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC, with standard, deluxe, and collector’s editions shown by the publisher. Platform-specific matchmaking conditions and current stock should be verified before purchase.

Bottom line

Elden Ring gives you a personal world with temporary multiplayer attachments: summon a small number of guests, complete an objective, survive possible invasions, and return home. Nightreign makes cooperation the organizing principle by matching players into finite expeditions with their own pacing, rewards, and mode rules. Calling either game a “Soulslike MMO” without that distinction hides the decision that matters most: whether you want occasional visitors in your campaign or a party built around the expedition itself.
