Verify the exact game, edition, platform, and region on the publisher’s official product or support page, then check the retailer listing, package inserts, and your receipt or order email. A bonus may arrive as a paper voucher, a separately issued retailer code, a full digital-game entitlement, or content applied automatically to a digital-store purchase.
Before buying or opening a copy, confirm what is actually included, where the code is delivered, which account and platform can redeem it, whether internet access is required, when the code expires, and whether the disc must remain in the console. These checks prevent the most common surprises: a missing preorder code, a region-locked voucher, a used code, or a “physical” edition whose game is supplied digitally.

Start with the exact edition, not the marketing label
Edition names are not precise enough by themselves. “Deluxe,” “Launch,” “Collector’s,” and similar labels can contain different items on different platforms, in different countries, or through different retailers. Write down all four identifiers before you investigate:

- the complete game title and edition name;
- the platform and generation, such as PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox, or a PC storefront;
- the sales region and the account region that will redeem the code;
- the retailer and whether the copy is new, open-box, or used.
A publisher may list a disc for one platform, a download code for another, and a retailer-exclusive voucher for the same named edition. A regional product page can also describe a promotion that does not apply elsewhere. Treat every listing as a claim to verify, not as proof that all versions contain the same items.

What “digital bonus” can mean
Digital bonus is a broad term. Identify which of these entitlements you are being promised before deciding that a package is complete.
Extra downloadable content
A voucher can unlock costumes, vehicles, missions, an art book, a soundtrack, currency, or other add-ons. The base game may still be entirely on the disc. The voucher can be printed on a separate slip, inside another component, or delivered by the retailer after purchase.
A digital upgrade
Some packages include a disc for the older console generation and a code or entitlement for a newer version. The upgrade may not be a standalone purchase: the original disc can remain the license check required to launch the upgraded game.

A package can be physically collectible while supplying the game itself as a digital code. A steelbook, soundtrack, artbook, or other object does not prove that a game disc is present. Confirm whether the code grants the full game, an edition upgrade, or only an add-on.
Automatic digital content
When a purchase is made directly through a digital store, the bonus can be attached to the transaction automatically. In that case there may be no voucher to find in a box or email. Automatic delivery is different from a physical purchase that requires a code.

A retailer or preorder promotion
A publisher-wide edition and a retailer promotion are separate offers. A preorder costume or weapon may be sent in a retailer email, printed on the receipt, or generated in the retailer’s order system rather than packed with the game. Such a code can stop being available when the preorder period ends, even if the same physical edition remains on shelves.
A reliable seven-step verification process
- Record the identifiers. Copy the exact title, edition, platform, region, and retailer SKU or product name. Photograph the listing if the offer may change.
- Read the publisher’s edition page. Find the official product or support page for that exact platform and region. Compare its contents list with the retailer description. Look for wording such as “voucher,” “download code,” “digital entitlement,” “upgrade,” or “disc required.”
- Check platform support information. A platform holder’s redemption rules can reveal account-region limits, internet requirements, generation-specific restrictions, and whether a code can be used only once.
- Inspect every physical component. Open the box and check the disc holder, paper inserts, steelbook, soundtrack or collectible packaging, and any sleeve inside the case. Codes are often on a small card rather than on the game case itself.
- Review the transaction record. Search the receipt, retailer order page, dispatch email, and spam folder. A retailer may issue a preorder or promotional code separately from the shipment.
- Read the redemption terms before using the code. Confirm the platform, account and country, internet requirement, validity date, preorder eligibility, stock limitation, and whether the code is one-use. Do not redeem a code on the wrong account because transfers are commonly unavailable.
- Separate the game license from the bonus license. Establish whether the disc contains the base game, whether the full game is a download, and whether the disc must stay inserted after installation. Only then decide whether the package matches the advertised edition.
Where the code may be hidden
Searching only the game case misses many legitimate delivery methods. Use this inspection order:

- Disc or holder packaging: Some editions print a game code on cardboard surrounding the disc or place a voucher under the disc tray.
- Special collectibles: A soundtrack or other physical item can carry the code. In one documented edition, a playable cassette held the soundtrack code.
- Separate retailer message: Preorder bonuses may arrive in a second email, a digital receipt, or a message in the retailer account.
- Digital order record: A direct digital-store purchase may apply the entitlement automatically, leaving no code at all.
If a sealed package is missing an item named in the official contents list, keep the box, inserts, receipt, and photographs intact. Do not discard packaging before the retailer or publisher confirms how the entitlement is supplied.
Read the terms attached to every code
Platform and account
A code can be valid only on one platform family or storefront. A PlayStation voucher is not interchangeable with an Xbox or PC code. The account used for redemption may also need to be registered in the same country or region as the voucher.
Region
Regional offers are not universal. A support page for Australia, for example, may describe a voucher and preorder period that differ from North America or Europe. Match the product’s regional rating, packaging, store listing, and account country before relying on an offer.

Internet connection
Redemption normally requires an online account and an internet connection. Some editions also require an internet connection to download the game or premium content even when a disc is included. Offline installation and offline play are separate questions.

Look for a printed validity date or a date in the product-code terms. Preorder bonuses can end at launch, and a publisher can make a code available only while supplies last. An unopened box does not automatically extend a promotion.
One-time use and used copies
A voucher that looks untouched may already have been redeemed by a previous owner. Used-game sellers cannot establish code validity merely by showing the insert. Ask for written confirmation of what remains unused, but treat any guarantee as a retailer policy rather than proof from the publisher.
Do not confuse a physical package with a physical game
There are three separate questions:
- Is there a physical object in the package?
- Is the base game stored on a disc?
- Is the bonus delivered as a code or automatically to an account?
The answers can differ. A collector package may contain a steelbook and a full-game digital code. A cross-generation package may include a last-generation disc and a code for the newer version. A normal disc edition may include a voucher for extras while the disc remains necessary to launch the game. Record each entitlement separately instead of describing the whole package simply as “physical.”
How disc requirements affect upgrades
When a code grants a newer-generation download, check the license rule before buying an upgrade. Some publishers require the original disc to be inserted every time you play the downloaded version. Removing or selling the disc can therefore remove your ability to launch the upgrade, even though the newer files remain installed. A digital upgrade can also be tied to the same platform account that redeemed the code and may not transfer with a console.

Retail listings should state whether the upgrade is included, optional, or limited to a particular platform pair. If they do not, use the publisher’s support page rather than inferring the answer from a badge on the box.
Verified examples of different delivery patterns
These official examples illustrate why no single rule covers every physical edition. Their terms are title-, platform-, retailer-, and region-specific.

How to compare two physical editions
Use the same questions for each candidate edition. This prevents a retailer-exclusive bonus from being mistaken for standard contents.

If a retailer leaves a cell unanswered, write “not stated” and verify it with the publisher. Do not fill the gap with assumptions based on a more expensive edition or another platform.
What to do when a promised code is missing
- Preserve evidence. Keep the receipt or order number, packaging, inserts, photographs, and the exact edition and platform details.
- Check the retailer channel first. A preorder or promotional code may be issued by email or in the retailer account rather than inside the box. Ask the seller to confirm whether it was sent separately.
- Check the publisher’s support route. Follow the contact method named on the official support page. Provide proof of purchase and identify the region and platform.
- Do not publish the code publicly. Anyone who redeems it first can make a legitimate claim difficult to resolve.
- Escalate before the stated deadline. If the code has an expiry date or the promotion ended at launch, explain when and where you bought the edition and request the remedy specified by the retailer or publisher.
Support teams may distinguish a missing insert from a code that was already redeemed. A photograph of the sealed package, an unaltered scratch panel, and the purchase record can help establish which situation applies, but only the retailer or publisher can confirm entitlement.

Buying sealed, open-box, or used copies
Sealed copies
Sealed packaging reduces the chance that an insert was removed, but it does not guarantee that a promotion is still active. Check the code’s validity date and stock-limit language before paying a premium for an old “launch” edition.
Open-box copies
Ask the seller to inventory every insert and state whether the code was redeemed. An open box can be complete physically while its digital bonus has no remaining value.
Used copies
Price the copy as though the voucher may be unavailable unless the retailer provides a clear, enforceable guarantee. The disc can remain playable while a one-time bonus is permanently tied to another account.
A quick decision checklist
- Exact edition, platform, region, and retailer identified.
- Official product or support page checked for that version.
- Retailer listing and official contents list agree.
- Box, disc holder, inserts, and special collectibles inspected.
- Receipt, order page, and email checked for a separate code.
- Base game, DLC, upgrade, and preorder entitlements listed separately.
- Account, platform, region, internet, expiry, stock, and one-use terms understood.
- Disc requirement for installation and future play confirmed.
- Missing-code support route and proof-of-purchase requirements saved.
Bottom line: verify the entitlement, not the box
The dependable method is to match the exact edition, platform, and region to the publisher’s current information, then trace every entitlement to its delivery method and redemption terms. A physical package can contain a disc, a digital code, both, or neither for the game itself; bonuses can be in the box, in a retailer message, or applied automatically. Checking those details before redemption—and before buying a used or regional copy—tells you what you will actually own and whether the disc must remain with you.
