“ep0lvr1y.dll” errors you may see
Windows may display one of these messages:
- “The program can’t start because ep0lvr1y.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “Error loading ep0lvr1y.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because ep0lvr1y.dll was not found.”
- “ep0lvr1y.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
The ep0lvr1y.dll error usually points to a damaged, incomplete, or obsolete Epson printer-driver package. It is not normally fixed by installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET.
The 60-second answer
EP0LVR1Y.DLL is associated with the Epson Printer Driver program from SEIKO EPSON CORPORATION. It is a legacy printer-driver component, not a general Windows runtime or a file that belongs in System32 or SysWOW64.
The safest repair is:
- Identify the Epson printer or old Epson utility that is calling the file.
- Remove the existing Epson printer software and printer entry.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the exact driver for that printer model from Epson’s official support site.
- If Epson no longer provides the package, search Microsoft Update Catalog by the printer model.
Do not download a loose copy of ep0lvr1y.dll and copy it into a Windows folder. The correct file must come from the complete driver package, with the correct architecture and supporting files.
What is ep0lvr1y.dll?
EP0LVR1Y.DLL is a driver-category file connected with Epson printer software. Public file records describe it as an Epson Printer Driver component and associate it with older Epson packages containing printer-driver INF files such as prnep001.inf and prnep00l.inf.

The filename alone cannot identify the exact printer model. Older Epson ESC/P and Epson laser-printer packages are associated with this component, and the file may remain in an older Windows DriverStore package after a printer has been removed.
It should not be treated as:
- A Visual C++ Redistributable file
- A DirectX component
- A .NET library
- A game dependency
- A general Windows API file
- A DLL that should be manually registered
Some historical records describe copies from the Windows Vista and Windows 7 era. Public records also disagree about whether particular copies are 32-bit or AMD64. That is why the driver package and its architecture matter more than a filename, file size, or download-page label.
First identify what is calling the file
Before changing Windows files, determine whether the computer still uses an Epson printer.
Check installed printers
- Press Win+I to open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Look for Epson printers, including printers marked offline.
- Open each relevant printer and note its model.
On Windows 10, open Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.

If no Epson printer is listed, check whether an old Epson utility is launching with Windows:
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for Epson entries or an unfamiliar program named in the error dialog.
- Right-click an entry and choose Open file location, when available.
Also note the exact executable named in the error. A missing DLL message from an Epson utility suggests a stale Epson installation. The same message from an unrelated executable deserves additional investigation.
Check the DriverStore
The following command can show whether an Epson driver package remains installed:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
pnputil /enum-drivers | findstr /i "Epson prnep"
If Epson-related packages appear, do not immediately delete an oem##.inf package. First remove the associated printer and identify the exact package. Deleting the wrong driver can affect another printer.
Fix 1: Remove and reinstall the exact Epson package
This is the most likely solution when the printer is still needed.

Remove the Epson software
- Press Win+I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for Epson.
- Open the menu beside the Epson printer software.
- Select Uninstall.
- Follow the Epson removal wizard.
- Restart Windows.
On Windows 10, use Settings > Apps > Apps & features. Older Epson packages may instead be listed under Control Panel > Programs and Features. Some models also include Start > Epson > [printer model] > EPSON Printer Software Uninstall.
Remove the old printer
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the Epson printer.
- Choose Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows again if the Epson uninstaller requests it.
If Windows refuses to remove the printer, open Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Devices and Printers, right-click the Epson printer, and select Remove device.
Install the replacement package
Go to Epson’s official printer-driver support page and search by the exact printer model. Select the package that matches the Windows edition and architecture.

Microsoft’s catalog can contain model-specific Epson packages, including older ESC/P driver families.
Download the complete installer, not an individual DLL. Disconnect the printer during setup if the Epson instructions for that model require it. Run the installer, reconnect the printer when prompted, and restart Windows.
The repair worked if:
- The Epson printer appears normally in Printers & scanners.
- The Epson utility opens without the DLL message.
- A test page prints.
- The original executable no longer reports
ep0lvr1y.dll.
When Windows is 64-bit, install the 64-bit package unless the manufacturer specifically supplies a 32-bit application or driver arrangement. A 32-bit file and a 64-bit file are not interchangeable. Check Settings > System > About > System type to confirm whether Windows is x64-based, x86-based, or ARM-based.
Manually comparing a DLL’s size or hash is not a reliable substitute for selecting the correct driver package.

Fix 2: Remove an obsolete Epson reference
If the computer no longer has an Epson printer, restoring the DLL may be unnecessary. The error can come from an Epson utility, scheduled task, service, or startup entry left behind after an upgrade or uninstall.
Start with the visible startup list:
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Disable an obsolete Epson entry.
- Restart Windows.
- Check whether the error returns.
Do not disable an entry solely because its name is unfamiliar. Use Open file location and inspect whether it belongs to an Epson installation. If the file is gone but Windows still attempts to launch it, uninstall the related Epson software from Installed apps or Programs and Features.

You can also check Task Scheduler:
- Press Win+S.
- Search for
Task Scheduler. - Open Task Scheduler Library.
- Review tasks whose names or actions refer to Epson.
- Disable an obsolete task only after confirming that the printer is no longer used.
If the error disappears after removing the stale reference, do not reinstall ep0lvr1y.dll. The correct repair was removing the program that no longer had a valid driver installation.

Fix 3: Check Windows Update and the DriverStore
A Windows upgrade or driver update can leave a printer package incomplete.
- Press Win+I.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install applicable updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to Windows Update and select Advanced options.
- Open Optional updates, if available.
- Review driver updates for the printer.
Windows Update may restore a compatible printer package, but it may not provide every feature in Epson’s full installer. If the printer still fails, remove the Epson package and install the model-specific package manually.
You can inspect the printer driver through Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers and Print queues.
- Right-click the Epson device.
- Select Properties.
- Review the Driver tab.
- Note the provider, date, and version.
- Use Update driver only when you have a known compatible package or Windows Update source.
If the device has a warning icon, choose Uninstall device, select the option to remove the driver package only when you have identified it correctly, and restart before reinstalling the official driver.
Do not use Device Manager to force a driver meant for another Epson model.
Fix 4: Investigate antivirus quarantine
A security product may have quarantined a driver file, or a suspicious replacement may have been detected.
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Open the detection involving
ep0lvr1y.dll. - Review the original path, detection name, and action taken.
Restore or allow the file only when all of these are credible:
- It came from a verified Epson or Microsoft driver package.
- Its path belongs to the expected Epson installation or DriverStore location.
- The package has a valid digital signature.
- The printer model and installed package match.
Microsoft warns that allowing a genuine threat can expose the device. If the file came from an unknown folder, temporary download directory, cracked software package, or unofficial DLL source, do not restore it. Remove the suspicious copy and run a full Microsoft Defender scan.

A copy outside a legitimate Epson installation or DriverStore path deserves particular scrutiny. The “not designed to run on Windows” message alone does not prove malware, but it can indicate corruption, incompatibility, or an incorrect architecture.

Use these commands when multiple Windows components are failing, Windows Update is damaged, or system corruption is plausible. They do not replace reinstalling a third-party Epson driver.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. Restart when both commands complete, then test the printer or the program that displayed the error.
Possible outcomes include:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: Windows system files were not damaged.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test again.
- Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation: restart into Safe Mode and run SFC again, or repair the Epson package separately.
Repeating SFC will not recreate a missing Epson driver component when the driver package itself is absent.
If manually running DISM and SFC leaves you unsure which Windows component changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows issues; its free scan identifies problems, while repair is performed by the full version, and it is not required for a model-specific Epson driver reinstall.
Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent change
If the error began immediately after a Windows update, driver update, printer removal, or cleanup operation, System Restore may undo the change.
- Press Win+R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Choose a different restore point, if shown.
- Select a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
System Restore does not replace personal documents, but it can remove drivers or applications installed after the selected point. If no suitable restore point exists, return to the Epson uninstall and reinstall procedure.
Do not use regsvr32 for this file
regsvr32 applies to DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. Epson printer drivers are normally installed through their INF and driver-package mechanisms.

Do not copy the file into C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, a game folder, or an unrelated application directory. That can create an architecture mismatch, bypass driver servicing, and introduce tampered code.

Windows Features are also not the solution. Do not enable random optional features to resolve this Epson driver error.
If the error remains
Record these details before seeking further help:
- The exact error wording
- The executable named in the dialog
- The full path where Windows expects the DLL
- The Epson printer model
- The Windows edition and system type
- The DriverStore package name, if found
- The file’s digital-signature status
- The Microsoft Defender detection name, if any
If no Epson printer or Epson software remains, focus on the calling executable and its startup or scheduled-task reference rather than replacing the DLL. If an untrusted executable is requesting the file, run a full Defender scan and remove the suspicious program.

Is ep0lvr1y.dll a Windows system file?
