Emio – The Smiling Man Review: Captivating Mystery, Frustrating Investigation

Emio – The Smiling Man pairs an unsettling urban legend with character-focused detective fiction. Its writing impressed one reviewer; its investigative interactions did not always.

Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club builds an unsettling murder mystery around a chilling urban legend, then asks you to solve it through interviews, location searches, and clue review. Nintendo Life reviewer PJ O’Reilly praised its writing, characters, and art, but found its investigative interactions frustrating and its tone difficult to read. His 7/10 review makes “captivating but ultimately confusing” a fair description of one critic’s experience—not a verdict shared by every player.

What is Emio – The Smiling Man?

Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club is an interactive drama for Nintendo Switch, released on 29 August 2024. Nintendo describes it as the first new Famicom Detective Club story in 35 years. Its case begins when junior-high student Eisuke Sasaki is found dead with a paper bag bearing a smiley face over his head.

The image recalls a series of unsolved murders from 18 years earlier and the legend of Emio, a killer said to promise victims: “I can give you a smile that will last forever!” The central question is whether the old killer has returned, someone is copying the crimes, or the legend itself grew out of them. Nintendo’s product page outlines the premise and investigation.

How the mystery plays

You take the role of an assistant detective at the Utsugi Detective Agency. Progress comes from speaking with classmates and other people connected to the case, examining places, and piecing together testimony and clues. You travel between crime scenes and locations of interest, while a notebook lets you revisit findings if you get stuck.

This is a deliberate, text-led investigation rather than an action game. The appeal depends on following conversations and noticing what may matter; the same structure can feel slow when an interaction does not make the next useful step clear. Nintendo Life’s review by PJ O’Reilly praised the writing and character work but criticized the investigative mechanics as frustrating and said the game did little to modernize the structure of the 2021 remakes.

Why the review is both captivated and confused

What works for the reviewer

O’Reilly found the mystery intriguing and stylish, and highlighted the writing, characters, and art as strengths. The folkloric hook gives the case an immediate unease, while the return of familiar series characters—including Ayumi Tachibana, playable in some sections—connects it to the wider series. These are the foundations of the game’s captivation.

What makes the experience harder to follow

The criticism is not simply that the story has twists. O’Reilly’s mixed assessment also reflects interactions he found cumbersome and a tonal blend that can be hard to read. If the investigation’s next step is unclear, or the tonal shifts do not land for you, the mystery may feel confusing even when its premise is compelling. The available review does not establish a specific confusing ending or show that players generally share that reaction, so the title’s judgment should be understood as a critical perspective rather than a consensus.

Do you need to play the earlier games first?

The series context is clear, but the available coverage does not definitively establish whether Emio works as a complete entry for newcomers or whether earlier stories are needed. Nintendo identifies The Missing Heir and The Girl Who Stands Behind as the first two installments, remade for Switch; the sources do not say they are required preparation for this case.

Unicorn Overlord - Nintendo Switch
  • Traverse a vibrant world, assemble units and direct them into exquisitely animated battles.
  • Perform heroic deeds and grow renown throughout the five nations.
  • Cultivate a grand army with over 60 unique characters, from humans and elves to massive beasts and heavenly angels.

If you want that background, those are the relevant earlier games to look for. Nintendo Life’s launch coverage captured the same practical question from readers, but does not turn it into a definitive prerequisite answer.

Switch editions, price, demo, and languages

At launch, Nintendo Life reported physical and digital editions in Europe and North America. Nintendo of America announced a regular US launch price of $49.99 in July 2024; that is a historical launch price, not a statement of what the game costs now. Current prices, stock, and regional listings can change, so check the Nintendo eShop or local retailers before buying. The choice between editions is the usual one: a physical copy for shelf ownership or a digital copy for a download in your account.

Nintendo says the free demo covers up to chapter 3 and that progress transfers to the full game. Its UK product listing specifies Japanese voiceover and English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish on-screen text. Confirm the language options shown for your region before purchase.

Content and age context

Nintendo of America’s launch announcement links an ESRB descriptor listing blood, language, and violence. Separately, a Nintendojo review discusses abuse, suicide, mental health, and other difficult themes; treat that as a reviewer’s content note, not an exhaustive official warning. That review also says a post-credits epilogue unlocks as an additional chapter, adding backstory and addressing loose ends. Read Nintendojo’s review if you want more detail, bearing in mind that discussion may reveal story information.

Verdict: is Emio worth playing?

For players drawn to slow-burn detective fiction, an eerie urban legend, and character-focused writing, Emio offers a distinctive mystery. The trade-off is an investigative format that one reviewer found frustrating and a tonal mix that may not clarify the experience for everyone. O’Reilly’s 7/10 is a single review score, not an aggregate rating. Try the demo if you want to see whether the chapter-by-chapter investigation works for you before buying.
