In Enshrouded, fast travel comes from two kinds of nodes: fixed Ancient Spires and player-built Flame Altars. Climb an Ancient Spire, pass its obstacles, and commune with the Flame at the summit to add it to the map. Place a Flame Altar near a base or route to create another travel point and a protected building volume. For permanent terraforming, keep every excavation, foundation, and landscape change inside that altar’s illuminated boundary; work outside it and the terrain may reset after a relevant world reset or restart.

How fast travel works in Enshrouded
The game separates fast-travel infrastructure into world-placed towers and objects you place yourself. The distinction matters because the two nodes solve different problems. An Ancient Spire gives you a fixed regional destination and a useful launch point for gliding. A Flame Altar combines a destination with a claimable area in which you can build and reshape terrain with persistence.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe in-game Flame tutorial summarizes the system this way: “Your inner Flame illuminates paths, grants access to Ancient Spires and enables Fast Travel.” That statement describes the requirement rather than a one-button shortcut: an unexplored tower is not immediately available, and a newly placed altar is not the same thing as a tower you have climbed.
Ancient Spires: unlocking a permanent regional destination
What an Ancient Spire is
An Ancient Spire is a fixed tower in the world. Reaching its base is only the start. You must climb through the tower, solve its climbing puzzles, pass locked doors, and avoid traps before you can reach the summit. The Flame at the top is the interaction that changes the tower from an uncompleted landmark into a fast-travel destination.

Lighting or communing with the summit Flame also reveals regional landmarks associated with that Spire. This makes the first completion more valuable than simply opening a return point: it improves your map’s information for the surrounding area.
Step-by-step: unlock a Spire
- Find the tower on your map or while exploring. Treat the approach as an expedition rather than assuming the tower is already usable.
- Enter and begin the climb. Follow the tower’s traversal route and inspect the environment for the intended path through its climbing challenges.
- Work through locked doors and traps. A failed attempt does not change the unlock requirement; the Spire is still incomplete until you reach the top.
- Commune with the Flame at the summit. This is the decisive interaction. The tower becomes a map fast-travel point only after the summit Flame has been activated.
- Check the map before leaving. The Fast Travel quest directs you to open the map and select the Ancient Spire after lighting its summit Flame. Confirm that the destination is available while you are still in the region.
Why unlock Spires early
Each completed Spire gives you a repeatable regional launch point. From there, you can glide toward nearby objectives instead of making every trip from your main base. Unlocking towers early therefore reduces the cost of later exploration: a quest, resource run, or landmark search can begin near the relevant region rather than at the original starting area.
A practical route is to complete the first Spire you can safely reach, then use it as the starting point for nearby exploration. Continue this pattern as new regions become accessible. The point is not to clear every tower before building; it is to establish a network of regional anchors that shorten future journeys.
Using fast travel after a Spire is unlocked
Selecting the destination
Open the map and select the completed Ancient Spire. The map interaction described by the Fast Travel quest is the relevant confirmation step: the destination must be the Spire whose summit Flame you have already activated. If a tower does not appear as a selectable travel point, return to the summit and complete the Flame interaction rather than assuming the map is malfunctioning.
Planning a Spire-to-glide route
- Use the Spire as a regional launch point when the objective is spread across a broad area.
- Check the map for the landmarks revealed by that tower before choosing a direction.
- Reserve a nearby Flame Altar for a long-term base or repeated route when a tower is too far from the exact work site.
- Unlock towers before a major regional building project so you have a reliable way to return with materials and tools.
Fast travel gets you to the region; it does not decide where you should build. A Spire is fixed in the world, while an altar can be positioned around your actual excavation, workshop, or resource circuit.
Flame Altars: player-built travel points and permanent claims
Crafting and placing an altar
The official wiki’s cited recipe requires five stone once the base-claim quest has unlocked the Flame Altar recipe. Because the recipe depends on that quest unlock, collecting stone alone does not make the object available before the relevant progression step.

Place the altar where it can serve the purpose you have in mind: beside a long-term base, near a frequently visited resource route, or close to a distant quest region. The altar then functions as both a player-created fast-travel node and the center of a protected building area.
Choose the location before you dig
Terraforming is easiest to preserve when the altar is planned before major work begins. Walk the proposed site and identify the full footprint of the project: foundations, terraces, ramps, underground rooms, access paths, and the ground you expect to remove or fill. The permanent area is measured from the altar’s illuminated boundary, so an attractive center point can still be a poor choice if one edge of the build falls outside the claim.
For a base that may expand, leave room for future wings and approaches rather than placing the altar tightly against a cliff or property line. If the project is a narrow outpost, a central placement can cover the useful work area without requiring the largest possible protected volume.
Where terraforming remains permanent
The boundary rule
Place a Flame Altar outside the Shroud, then perform your terrain work inside the altar’s illuminated building range. The building tutorial states: “Landscaping inside the building range will remain.” In practical terms, the boundary is the difference between a deliberate, persistent landscape and terrain that may be restored by a later world reset or restart condition described by the wiki.
The rule applies to preparation as well as the finished structure. If you cut a foundation inside the claim but carve an access trench outside it, only the protected portion is covered by the permanence statement. Keep excavation, fill, leveling, entrances, retaining slopes, and decorative landscaping within the active altar boundary when persistence matters.
What the rule does not promise
- It does not make terrain outside the illuminated range permanent.
- It does not turn an Ancient Spire into a building claim; Spires are world objects, not player-owned construction zones.
- It does not remove the need to check the boundary before extending a project.
- It does not establish a universal altar-count limit or guarantee that progression values will remain unchanged after a patch.
Flame strength and protected build volume
Strengthening the Flame expands the protected volume around an altar. The cited Altar page lists these example maximum dimensions:

| Flame level | Listed protected volume | Planning implication |
|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | 40 × 40 × 40 | Suitable for a compact starter structure or a small excavation; measure the project rather than assuming every edge will fit. |
| Level 2 | 80 × 80 × 80 | Provides substantially more horizontal and vertical room for an expanding base. |
| Level 3 | 120 × 120 × 120 | Allows a larger build envelope, including deeper or taller terrain work when the entire design stays inside it. |
| Level 4 | 160 × 160 × 160 | Offers the largest example volume listed by that page for major multi-level projects. |
These dimensions are version-sensitive progression values. Confirm them against the live game after updates before committing to a project that depends on an exact edge, height, or depth. The dimensions describe the listed maximum volume, not a promise that any particular terrain feature will be easy to reach or that an altar can be placed in every location.
Terraforming workflow: from bare site to permanent base
1. Establish the claim
Place the Flame Altar outside the Shroud at the site you intend to keep. Wait until its illuminated boundary is clear, then inspect the edges from several directions. A visual check from only the center can hide a corner or lower level that falls outside the protected volume.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →2. Mark the project footprint
Decide where the lowest excavation, highest terrace, and widest foundation will be. Include routes that are easy to overlook: a switchback path, a bridge approach, a loading yard, or the soil removed to expose an underground entrance. If any of those elements must remain after a reset, move the altar or reduce the design before cutting terrain.
3. Raise the Flame before an oversized build
Strengthen the Flame before attempting a large underground, terraced, or multi-level project. Expanding the protected volume after construction has begun can be awkward if the initial boundary forced you to place foundations or remove terrain in stages. A larger claim at the start also gives you room to adjust the layout without crossing the permanence line.
4. Shape the terrain
Use the terrain-editing options available within the altar boundary to cut, fill, or level the site. Start with broad shaping, then refine slopes and ledges. Keeping the work inside the claim makes the permanence rule easier to audit: every visible change belongs to one protected volume rather than a mixture of protected and unprotected edits.
5. Build with the Construction Hammer
After the ground is prepared, use the Construction Hammer for blocks and blueprints. Place foundations only after confirming that their full footprint is inside the altar’s illuminated range. This order avoids building a wall that looks complete but depends on an unprotected strip of terrain beneath it.

6. Recheck after expansions
When you add a wing, basement, retaining wall, or external path, inspect the boundary again. A project can begin safely and later cross the claim as it grows. Treat every expansion as a new boundary check, especially after strengthening the Flame or rearranging the site.
Flame Altar versus Ancient Spire
| Comparison point | Flame Altar | Ancient Spire |
|---|---|---|
| Who places it? | The player places it after the base-claim progression unlocks the recipe. | It is a fixed world tower. |
| Fast-travel role | Creates a player-selected travel destination. | Becomes a destination after its summit Flame is activated. |
| Protected building zone | Yes. Its illuminated boundary defines the claimed building volume. | No. It is not a player building claim. |
| Terrain permanence | Landscaping inside the building range remains; changes outside are not covered. | Not applicable as a terraforming claim. |
| Regional launch point | Useful when placed near the route or base you choose. | Useful as a fixed regional point for gliding and exploration. |
| Unlock method | Complete the base-claim progression, then craft with five stone according to the cited recipe. | Climb the tower, solve its obstacles, and commune with the summit Flame. |
The choice is therefore complementary rather than either-or. Use Spires to connect regions and Altars to anchor the places where you intend to live, excavate, or repeatedly work.
How many Flame Altars can you place?
A single current altar-count figure is not established by the supplied gameplay evidence, and published limits can change with patches. Do not plan a permanent network around an assumed number. Check the live version’s progression and building rules before placing a large number of temporary or permanent claims.

For planning purposes, separate the question of count from the question of coverage. Even if the game allows the number of altars you need, each project still has to fit within an active altar boundary, and the useful volume expands only when the Flame is strengthened. A few well-positioned, upgraded claims may serve a construction plan better than many low-level placements, while separate regional outposts can make sense when travel distance is the dominant problem.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Planning checklist for a reliable travel-and-building network
- Reach the first available Ancient Spire and complete its climb.
- Commune with the summit Flame so the tower appears as a travel destination.
- Open the map and confirm the Spire can be selected before leaving the region.
- Complete the base-claim quest so the Flame Altar recipe is available.
- Gather the five stone required by the cited recipe and place an altar outside the Shroud.
- Position the altar around the complete long-term project, not merely the first room you plan to build.
- Keep all important excavation, foundations, paths, and landscaping inside the illuminated boundary.
- Strengthen the Flame before starting a large underground or terraced build.
- Use the Construction Hammer for blocks and blueprints after terrain preparation.
- Recheck altar counts, protected dimensions, and other progression values after patches.
Troubleshooting common failures
The Spire is visible but cannot be selected for travel
Visibility is not the unlock condition. Return to the tower and verify that you reached the summit and completed the interaction with the Flame. Then open the map and look for the destination again. The tower becomes a fast-travel point after that summit interaction, not merely after discovering its location.
Terrain changed after a restart or world reset
Check whether the affected edit was inside the Flame Altar’s illuminated building range. The permanence statement applies to landscaping inside that range; it does not cover work outside the claim. If the project straddles the edge, relocate the altar, reduce the footprint, or reshape the design so future edits remain protected.

The build does not fit despite a high Flame level
Compare the full three-dimensional project with the listed volume, including depth and height. A design can fit horizontally and still extend below or above the protected volume. Measure the lowest and highest points, then account for approaches and terrain removed around the structure rather than measuring only the finished walls.
An altar is in the wrong place
Stop before major excavation and evaluate the complete footprint again. Moving the planning point is less costly than discovering that a basement, access road, or retaining slope sits outside the permanence boundary. If the project is already built, inspect every unprotected section before adding more detail.
Practical route patterns
Early exploration pattern
Complete the first reachable Spire, confirm it on the map, and use it as a regional launch point for gliding. Place an altar only when you have identified a site worth keeping as a base or repeated stop. This limits early construction commitments while still giving you a reliable way to return to the region.
Permanent headquarters pattern
Choose the headquarters site first, place the altar outside the Shroud, and strengthen the Flame before deep excavation. Shape the entire building pad and its approach within the claim, then construct with the Hammer. Reserve space for later expansion so workshops, storage, and paths do not force an unprotected extension.
Remote quest or resource pattern
Unlock the nearest Spire for regional access, then decide whether repeated trips justify a player-placed altar. A Spire handles regional travel; an altar becomes worthwhile when you need a protected outpost, a persistent work area, or a destination closer to the exact route than the fixed tower provides.
Version-aware expectations
Progression tables and building limits are not permanent guarantees. The cited altar dimensions are examples from the listed Altar page, and the exact number of altars a player may place is not established here. Recheck those values after patches, especially before designing a project that depends on a particular boundary size or a maximum altar count. The underlying planning principles remain useful even when a value changes: activate each Spire’s summit Flame, keep persistent landscaping inside an altar’s illuminated range, and size the claim for the complete three-dimensional build.
