How to Fix “Unable to Access Jarfile” on a Minecraft Server

Java cannot start a Minecraft server when the path after -jar does not point to a readable file. This guide covers exact filename checks, Windows and Linux commands, quoted paths, permissions, hosting panels and corrupt downloads.

The error means Java cannot open the exact file named after -jar. In most cases, the server command is running in the wrong folder, the filename does not match the real file (including a hidden second .jar extension), a path with spaces was not quoted, or the account cannot read the file. Find the jar’s exact name, run the command from its folder or use a correctly quoted absolute path, then update your hosting panel’s startup setting if you are using managed hosting.

What “Unable to access jarfile” actually means

A command such as java -jar server.jar nogui asks Java to open one specific path: server.jar. Java resolves a relative name like that against the process’s current working directory, not necessarily the folder you can see in File Explorer or the folder you intended to use. If Java cannot open that path, it stops before Minecraft starts and prints an error in the form Error: Unable to access jarfile <name>.

The filename printed in the error is the first diagnostic clue. Playkeeper’s 2026 explanation describes the message as Java being unable to open the file supplied after -jar. A Minecraft Forum troubleshooting case from 2023 reached the same conclusion for java -jar minecraft_server.jar --nogui: the command fails when that exact file is not in the directory where the command runs or when the name is wrong.

This is different from a Java-version problem and different from a damaged archive. A missing, misplaced, misnamed, inaccessible or badly quoted path causes “Unable to access jarfile.” If Java finds the file but cannot read a valid archive, it normally reports Invalid or corrupt jarfile instead. Treat those as separate branches of the diagnosis.

Fastest fix: verify the file, folder and command in that order

  1. Open the server’s actual folder. Do not rely on a shortcut, an old command window or a panel label. Locate the directory containing the Minecraft server jar.
  2. Reveal the complete filename. On Windows, turn on View → Show → File name extensions in File Explorer. Look for spelling, capitalization, version suffixes and accidental names such as server.jar.jar.
  3. Run the command from that directory. Change into the folder in Command Prompt, PowerShell or a Linux terminal before using a relative name such as server.jar.
  4. Make the command match character for character. Replace the example name with the filename that is really present. A versioned file such as paper-1.21.4-123.jar will not be opened by a command that still says server.jar.
  5. Quote any path containing spaces. For example, use "C:Minecraft Serverserver.jar", not an unquoted path that ends at the space before Server.
  6. Check access rights. The account running Java must be able to read the jar and traverse every parent directory.
  7. If a panel starts the server, correct its startup jar variable. The configured name must equal an existing file in the panel’s main server directory.

After each change, run the command once and read the new error. Do not change Java flags, world files or port settings until Java can open the jar; those settings are unrelated to this particular message.

Find the real jar filename

Windows Explorer

Open the folder where you downloaded or installed the server. Enable visible extensions with View → Show → File name extensions. A normal file should end in one visible .jar. Check for these common mismatches:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • server.jar.jar, caused by adding .jar when Windows was already appending it;
  • a versioned name such as minecraft_server.1.21.4.jar or a Paper build name while the command still uses server.jar;
  • misspellings, extra spaces, hyphens or underscores;
  • capitalization differences, which matter on case-sensitive Linux filesystems even if Windows appears tolerant;
  • a shortcut or downloaded file in a different directory from the one used by the command.

Copy the filename from the folder rather than retyping it. Renaming the file to a stable name such as server.jar is also valid, but update every script, shortcut and panel setting that refers to the old name.

Command Prompt and PowerShell checks

In Command Prompt, move to the directory and list its contents:

cd /d "C:Minecraft Server"
dir

The /d switch also changes drives. Confirm that the listing contains the jar you intend to run. In PowerShell, the equivalent is:

Set-Location "C:Minecraft Server"
Get-ChildItem -Filter *.jar

If the listing shows no jar, Java cannot open one from that directory. Search for the file, move it there, or change to the directory that actually contains it. If the listing shows a different name, use that exact name in the launch command.

Linux and other Unix-like systems

Change to the server directory and list jar files:

cd "/srv/minecraft server"
ls -la *.jar

The -a option helps reveal unusual entries, while the wildcard limits the output to jar files. Linux treats Server.jar, server.jar and server.JAR as different names. Copy the exact spelling shown by ls.

Run Java from the correct working directory

Once you know the filename, start the command in the same directory. A typical local command is:

java -Xms2G -Xmx4G -jar server.jar nogui

-Xms2G sets the initial heap and -Xmx4G sets the maximum heap; they do not locate the jar. The important part for this error is that server.jar matches the file in the current directory.

On Windows:

cd /d "C:Minecraft Server"
java -Xms2G -Xmx4G -jar server.jar nogui

On Linux:

cd "/srv/minecraft server"
java -Xms2G -Xmx4G -jar server.jar nogui

If you opened a new terminal after downloading the server, it usually starts in your home directory rather than the server directory. Running cd again in that new window is necessary; opening the folder in Explorer does not change the terminal’s working directory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use an absolute path when you cannot change directories

An absolute path removes ambiguity about the working directory. Quote it whenever any directory name contains spaces.

java -Xms2G -Xmx4G -jar "C:Minecraft Serverserver.jar" nogui

On Linux or macOS, quote the path or escape each space:

java -Xms2G -Xmx4G -jar "/srv/minecraft server/server.jar" nogui

An unquoted Windows command such as java -jar C:Minecraft Serverserver.jar nogui is parsed as separate arguments. Java receives an incomplete path and reports that it cannot access the jar. The same parsing issue occurs on Unix-like systems when a path contains spaces.

Use either a relative path from a deliberately selected server directory or a fully quoted absolute path. Mixing an old directory with a new filename is a common way to keep reproducing the same error.

Correct hidden extensions and version-specific names

The server.jar.jar case

When extensions are hidden, Windows may display server.jar even though the real name is server.jar.jar. After enabling extensions, rename the file so it ends in exactly one .jar. Then confirm the command uses the corrected name.

Versioned or build-specific downloads

Server software often downloads with a detailed name. For example, a file called paper-1.21.4-123.jar is not equivalent to server.jar. You can launch it directly:

java -Xms2G -Xmx4G -jar paper-1.21.4-123.jar nogui

Alternatively, rename it to server.jar and keep the shorter command. If you update the server later, repeat the rename or revise the command and any panel startup field. Do not leave two similarly named jars in the folder while troubleshooting; you may fix one file but continue launching another.

Check permissions and directory traversal

Java needs read access to the jar itself and execute (traverse) access to every parent directory. A file can be visible in a graphical file manager yet inaccessible to the account that launches the service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows checks

  • Right-click the jar, select Properties and review the Security tab for the account or service identity that runs the server.
  • Make sure the account has permission to read the file and to access the containing directories.
  • If the server runs as a scheduled task or Windows service, check that it uses the same account you tested interactively. A command that works in your user session may fail under a restricted service account.

A permission failure can produce an access error even when the filename and location are correct. Grant the minimum read and directory access required, then retry under the actual account used by the server.

Linux checks

Inspect ownership and mode bits:

ls -l /srv/minecraft/server.jar
namei -l /srv/minecraft/server.jar

The first command shows the jar’s owner and permissions. The second displays permissions for each directory in the path, which helps identify a parent directory that the service account cannot traverse. If the server runs as a dedicated account, ensure that account can read the jar and enter every parent directory. Avoid making the entire filesystem or home directory world-writable just to get past this message.

Fixing the error in a hosting panel

Hosted servers generally start Java through a panel rather than a terminal you control. The panel’s startup command or jar variable still has to name a real file in its main server directory. EnduranceNodes states the rule plainly: the jar filename must match a real file. A setting of server.jar fails immediately when the directory contains a differently named Paper build.

  1. Stop the server in the panel.
  2. Open the panel’s file manager or main server directory and note the exact jar filename, including its extension and capitalization.
  3. Open the startup, launch or variable settings. The label varies by panel; look for a field such as Server JAR, JAR file, startup jar or a variable embedded in the startup command.
  4. Replace the configured value with the exact filename shown in the file manager. Do not include a path if the panel expects only a filename.
  5. Save the setting, start the server and read the console output.

If the panel lets you choose a jar from a dropdown, refresh the file list after uploading or renaming the file. A stale selection can continue pointing at a deleted build. If you use a custom startup command, preserve the panel’s other required variables and change only the jar value.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before using a panel’s reinstall, reset or “repair” function, download a copy of the world, configuration files and scripts. Omne Hosting warns that reinstall operations may overwrite files. A filename problem does not justify risking the world data.

Distinguish a missing jar from a corrupt jar

First make sure Java can open the path. If the message changes to Invalid or corrupt jarfile, the path problem is resolved and the file itself is suspect. Omne Hosting distinguishes this condition from a missing or misnamed jar and recommends replacing the download.

  • First player or team to 500 wins.
  • When you're down to one card, don't forget to yell "UNO"!
  1. Stop the server and preserve a backup of the world and configuration files.
  2. Delete or move the jar that Java identifies as corrupt; do not remove the world directory unless you intentionally want to erase it.
  3. Download a fresh server jar from the relevant official software source for the server implementation and version you intend to run.
  4. Place the new file in the server directory and use its exact name in the command or hosting-panel variable.
  5. Start the server again. If the error returns to “Unable to access jarfile,” recheck the location and configured name; if it remains “Invalid or corrupt jarfile,” verify the replacement download and storage.

Do not treat a corrupt-jar message as proof that changing memory flags, accepting the Minecraft EULA or reinstalling the operating system will help. Those actions do not repair an unreadable archive.

Local server versus hosted panel: what to inspect first

Where you run the server First inspection Typical correction Important caution
Windows Command Prompt or PowerShell Current directory, visible extensions and the output of dir or Get-ChildItem Use cd /d or Set-Location, then match the exact filename A new terminal may start outside the server folder
Linux or another Unix-like terminal pwd, ls -la and case-sensitive spelling Change to the correct directory or use a quoted absolute path Every parent directory must be traversable by the service account
Managed hosting panel Main server directory and startup jar field or variable Set the variable to the real uploaded filename Back up world and configuration data before reinstall or reset actions

For a local installation, the working directory and filesystem are the decisive variables. For a hosted installation, the panel’s startup configuration is usually the first place to look, even when the file visibly exists in the panel.

Decision table for the exact symptom

What you observe Likely cause Next action
The error names server.jar, but the folder contains a versioned jar Filename mismatch Use the versioned name or rename the file and update every launcher
Explorer shows server.jar, but extensions were hidden Possible .jar.jar name Enable extensions and correct the real filename
The jar is in a folder with spaces and the command is unquoted Path parsed at the space Wrap the complete path in quotation marks
dir, ls or the panel file list shows no jar Wrong directory or failed upload Locate the file, move it into the launch directory or upload it again
The filename and directory are correct, but a service account still fails Read or directory-traversal permission Grant the service account required access and retry under that identity
The message is Invalid or corrupt jarfile Damaged or incomplete download Replace the jar with a fresh official download while preserving data
A panel still launches an old name after a rename Stale startup variable or selection Refresh the file list and edit the startup setting

Common attempts that do not solve this error

Changing RAM flags first

Changing -Xms or -Xmx cannot help Java locate a file. Keep the command simple while testing, for example java -jar exact-name.jar nogui, then restore your chosen memory settings after the jar opens.

Typing a guessed filename

Names copied from an old tutorial often contain a version or build number that is no longer present. Read the current directory listing and copy that name instead of guessing.

Opening the folder without changing the terminal directory

File Explorer and a terminal maintain separate working locations. Use cd, Set-Location or an absolute path; merely browsing to a folder does not affect a command prompt that is already open elsewhere.

Renaming only the file

Renaming a jar without changing a batch file, shell script, scheduled task or panel variable leaves the launcher pointing at the old name. Search each launch method you use and update it consistently.

Reinstalling before backing up

A reinstall can overwrite files in a hosting panel. Copy the world and configuration data first, then repair the launch setting or replace only the jar whenever possible.

Make a reliable launch script

A small script can make the working directory explicit and prevent accidental launches from another folder. In a Windows batch file, use:

@echo off
cd /d "C:Minecraft Server"
java -Xms2G -Xmx4G -jar server.jar nogui
pause

For Linux, a shell script can use:

#!/bin/sh
cd "/srv/minecraft server" || exit 1
exec java -Xms2G -Xmx4G -jar server.jar nogui

Replace both the directory and jar name with your actual values. The explicit cd means the script does not depend on where it was launched. The Linux || exit 1 prevents Java from starting in the wrong directory if the change fails.

Prevent the error after updates or moves

  • Keep the server jar, launch script and world in a clearly named directory rather than scattering them across Downloads and Desktop.
  • Use one stable filename, or update the launcher immediately whenever a versioned filename changes.
  • Leave file extensions visible on Windows while maintaining the server.
  • After uploading a new build to a panel, verify its name in the panel’s file manager and startup field before pressing Start.
  • Document the account that runs the server and test read access after moving the directory.
  • Back up the world and configuration files before replacing a jar or invoking a panel repair function.
  • Keep a known-good launch command that includes the correct directory and filename.

A complete clean-room test

If the original setup is confusing, isolate the path issue without touching the existing world:

  1. Create a new, plainly named test directory, such as C:MinecraftTest or /srv/minecraft-test.
  2. Place a fresh server jar in that directory and note its exact filename.
  3. Open a new terminal and change into the test directory explicitly.
  4. Run java -jar exact-name.jar nogui, substituting the real filename.
  5. If Java opens the jar there, the original setup has a directory, name, quoting or permission mismatch. Compare the two locations rather than changing Java itself.
  6. Once the command works, stop the test server and apply the same verified path and naming pattern to the production directory, preserving the original world and settings.

This test does not prove that every mod, plugin or world is compatible; it only separates “Java cannot open this path” from later Minecraft startup issues.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the error appear when the jar is visibly in the folder?

Visibility alone does not prove that Java is using that folder. The terminal or service may have a different working directory, the command may name a different file, the displayed extension may hide a second .jar, or the launching account may lack access. Check the directory from the same account and process that starts the server.

Should I include --nogui or nogui?

That argument controls whether the server’s graphical interface is used; it does not locate the jar. Use the argument format required by your server software, but fix the path and filename first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does capitalization really matter?

Yes on Linux and other case-sensitive filesystems. A command naming server.jar will not open Server.jar. Matching the exact case also avoids portability problems when moving a server between operating systems.

Can I rename a downloaded server jar?

Yes. Renaming it to server.jar is convenient, provided you update scripts and hosting-panel settings and leave only the intended build in the launch directory.

What if the panel says the file exists but still cannot start it?

Compare the panel’s startup variable with the exact filename in its main server directory. Refresh the file list after uploading or renaming, remove stale selections and check that the panel is not configured to start from a different directory.

When should I download the jar again?

Download a replacement when Java reports Invalid or corrupt jarfile after the path and permissions are correct. “Unable to access jarfile” by itself calls for locating, naming, quoting or permission checks first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Fix the path before changing anything else: confirm the real filename, run Java from the directory that contains it or quote the absolute path, and make a hosting panel’s startup variable match that file exactly. If the message changes to “Invalid or corrupt jarfile,” replace the download; if it remains an access error, return to the directory, spelling, quoting and permission checks.
