Start with this quick checklist
Before changing Windows files, note:
- Which Epson program shows the error: Epson Scan, Epson Scan 2, Event Manager, Windows Fax and Scan, Paint, or another imaging application
- Whether the message appears at startup, when scanning, or while installing Epson software
- Your Epson printer, scanner, or all-in-one model
- Whether the problem began after a Windows update, Epson reinstall, cleanup, or antivirus detection
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit

ep0icb1.dll is reported in file inventories as an Epson WIA Module component associated with the Epson WIA Driver and Seiko Epson Corporation. WIA means Windows Image Acquisition, the Windows imaging architecture that lets applications communicate with scanners and other imaging devices through vendor drivers.

This points to an Epson device package rather than a general Windows library. It is not established as a Windows system DLL, Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET assembly, or universal component that should be copied into C:WindowsSystem32.

The message may say that ep0icb1.dll is missing, was not found, could not be loaded, or is corrupted. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency used by the DLL is missing.
Fix 1: Reinstall the exact Epson package
This is the most likely and safest repair. Do not begin by downloading the DLL separately.
- Identify the full Epson model name from the device label or from Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Open Epson’s official support site in a browser.
- Search for the exact model.
- Select Windows 10 or Windows 11 manually if automatic detection chooses incorrectly.
- Download the package Epson lists for the device. Depending on the model, this may be called Scanner Driver, Printer Driver, Epson Scan, Epson Scan 2, or Drivers and Utilities Combo Package.
- If Epson provides an uninstaller, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find the old Epson software, and uninstall it. Follow Epson’s product instructions if they specify a particular removal order.
- Restart Windows.
- Right-click the downloaded Epson installer and choose Run as administrator.
- Complete the installation and restart Windows again.
- Open the Epson scanning application and test the device.
Epson packages are model-specific. A package for a similar-looking printer or scanner may not contain the correct WIA components. Install the package listed for your exact product and Windows architecture.

If the Epson installer will not run
Remove the old Epson package using Epson’s own uninstaller where available, restart, and run the current product installer again as administrator. Disconnecting the USB cable during removal can help prevent Windows from immediately reusing an incomplete device installation. Reconnect it only when the installer requests it.
If you use a network scanner, confirm that the computer and device are on the same network and that the Epson utility can discover the device after installation.

A successful repair usually means the Epson application opens without the DLL message and the scanner appears under Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners. If the error remains, continue rather than copying a DLL into a Windows folder.
When Windows has several old or mismatched device drivers, manually finding the correct package can take repeated searches through model pages and installer versions. Reinstalling the exact Epson package remains the definitive fix for an Epson-specific DLL.
Fix 2: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Windows Security may have removed or isolated a damaged or suspicious copy.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review detections from the time the error began.
- Expand any item that references Epson software or the DLL.
- Do not restore it merely because the filename matches.
- Confirm that the file came from an Epson installer, is located in the expected Epson program directory, and has a valid Epson digital signature where one is available.
- Run a scan with Virus & threat protection > Scan options.
If the file was quarantined after an official Epson installation, reinstall the Epson package instead of restoring an isolated copy. If Windows Security continues to detect the newly installed file, leave it quarantined and investigate the detection. A DLL using an Epson-looking name is not automatically legitimate.
Fix 3: Check the Epson device and WIA service
If the file error appears when scanning rather than when launching Windows, check the device connection.

Restart the Windows Image Acquisition service
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
services.mscand press Enter. - Find Windows Image Acquisition (WIA).
- Double-click it.
- Set Startup type to Automatic if appropriate for your setup.
- Click Stop, wait briefly, then click Start.
- Select Apply and OK.
- Restart the Epson application.
If the service cannot start, note the error and continue with Windows repair checks.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, Printers, or Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for the Epson device or a warning icon.
- Right-click the device and choose Properties.
- Read the message under the General tab.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and date.
- If the device is disabled, choose Enable device.
- If Windows reports a damaged device, choose Uninstall device, restart Windows, and reinstall the Epson package.
Do not use Update driver to substitute a generic driver when Epson’s package is available. The generic driver may detect the hardware but omit Epson Scan or WIA integration.

Fix 4: Repair Windows components
Windows component corruption is less likely than an incomplete Epson installation, but it can prevent installers and imaging services from working correctly.
First install pending updates:
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
Then open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run these commands separately:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
Wait for each command to finish. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. Restart when both commands are complete, then run the Epson installer again.

SFC normally repairs protected Windows files. It should not be expected to recreate an Epson-only DLL. If the commands report that they could not repair files, repeat the Epson package installation and review the command results before trying unrelated runtime downloads.
Repeating DISM and SFC without knowing what changed can make this step tedious. It is optional, and reinstalling the Epson software remains necessary when the missing component belongs to that package.
Fix 5: Check for a missing dependency
The DLL may exist while another file it needs is missing or incompatible.
- Search Start for
ep0icb1.dll. - If a copy appears, right-click it and select Open file location.
- Do not move or replace it yet.
- Right-click the file, choose Properties, and inspect Digital Signatures if that tab is available.
- Note which Epson application launches from the same directory.
- Reinstall that complete Epson package rather than replacing individual dependencies.
Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET solely because the error names ep0icb1.dll. The filename does not establish that any of those runtimes supplies it. Install a runtime only when the complete error identifies that runtime or the Epson installer explicitly requires it.
Do not use regsvr32 as a generic fix
Avoid blindly running:
regsvr32 ep0icb1.dll
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. An Epson WIA component is not automatically a self-registering COM server, and registration will not restore a missing dependency or repair a damaged Epson installation.

Use the Epson installer and the WIA service instead. If Epson documentation for your exact model specifically instructs you to register a component, follow that product-specific instruction and use the path it provides.

Downloading ep0icb1.dll from a random DLL repository can provide:
- A malicious or modified file
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- A version that does not match your Epson package
- A file with missing dependencies
- A copy that conflicts with the application’s search path
Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder can also create version conflicts. Windows loads DLLs according to application and system search rules, so placement alone does not repair the owning installation.

The safe source is the official Epson support page for your exact model. A verified backup from the same Epson product, version, architecture, and signed installation package may also be appropriate. Do not restore a quarantined file until its origin and signature have been verified.
Fix 6: Remove a stale Epson startup reference
If no Epson device is installed anymore but the error appears whenever Windows starts, an old Epson utility may still be launching.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for Epson entries or an entry whose publisher and file location identify old Epson software.
- Right-click the entry and choose Disable.
- Restart Windows.
Also check Settings > Apps > Installed apps and uninstall Epson utilities you no longer use. Do not delete an unknown startup item solely because its name resembles the DLL. If the message continues, inspect Task Scheduler for a clearly identified Epson task and review Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application for the program name that is requesting the file.

Fix 7: Use System Restore only after identifying the trigger
If the problem began immediately after a driver or software change and a restore point exists:
- Search for Create a restore point.
- Open it and select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the change.
- Review the affected programs before confirming.
- Complete the restore and restart Windows.
System Restore is a fallback, not a replacement for installing the correct current Epson package.

What if the DLL is present but the error continues?
A dependency may be missing, the file may be incompatible or damaged, or the application may be loading another copy. Reinstall the complete Epson package, check antivirus history, inspect the file signature and location, and review Event Viewer.
Can I fix it with Windows Features?
There is no general optional Windows feature that supplies this Epson DLL. Ensure WIA is running through services.msc, then repair the Epson installation. If the Epson package itself fails, run DISM and SFC before trying the installer again.
What is the correct order?
Identify the Epson model, reinstall its official package, check Defender, restart WIA, inspect Device Manager, then run DISM and SFC. Avoid isolated DLL downloads and blind regsvr32 commands.
