1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches“ep9res.dll is missing from your computer” means Windows or a printer-related installer cannot find a legacy Epson driver resource file. ep9res.dll is identified as “Epson 9 pin driver”, a Microsoft Windows printer-driver component associated with older Epson nine-pin dot-matrix printers.
This is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, .NET file, game library, or general-purpose application dependency. On Windows 10 and Windows 11, the message usually points to an old printer package, a failed upgrade, a damaged Windows component, or leftover software looking for a legacy driver.

Which fix applies to you
Use the situation that best matches what you see:
- The error appears while adding or using an Epson printer: remove and reinstall the printer driver.
- The error appears during Windows Update, repair, or servicing: install pending updates, then run DISM and SFC.
- You no longer own an Epson printer: remove stale printers, old driver packages, and startup entries.
- Your antivirus recently quarantined the file: review quarantine, but prefer reinstalling the complete signed driver package.
- You downloaded a replacement DLL: do not copy it into a system folder. Remove it and reinstall the correct package.
- The error began after installing a printer driver: remove that driver and install the package for the exact printer model and Windows architecture.
- The message remains after every repair: identify the program or installer requesting the file before making further changes.
What ep9res.dll is
The file description is Epson 9 pin driver. Historically, it was included with Microsoft Windows printer-driver components for Epson nine-pin dot-matrix printers. Historical Windows records list it alongside ep24res.dll, the Epson 24-pin driver.

The exact location depends on the Windows release, language, architecture, service-pack level, and installed printer package. Modern Windows uses packaged printer drivers and the Driver Store, commonly beneath:
%windir%System32DriverStoreFileRepository
Do not manually modify files in the Driver Store. Windows expects driver packages to be installed through their package and INF files, with the correct architecture and signature.
Historical Windows XP records identify version 0.3.1281.1, but that does not establish the correct version for every computer. A file’s size, version, and directory are not reliable identification criteria by themselves.
Fix 1: Remove and reinstall the affected printer
This is the most appropriate repair when the error occurs during printing, printer setup, or installation of an old Epson device.
1. Identify the printer and Windows architecture
Find the printer’s exact model from its label or the existing printer entry. Also check Windows:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose System.
- Select About.
- Look at System type under Device specifications.
Do not substitute a 32-bit driver for a 64-bit installation, or copy a 64-bit file into a 32-bit driver location. Obtain a package intended for the exact printer model and Windows architecture.
2. Remove the printer
On Windows 11:
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Choose the affected Epson printer.
- Select Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
On Windows 10:
- Open Settings.
- Select Devices.
- Choose Printers & scanners.
- Select the Epson printer.
- Choose Remove device.
- Confirm.
Restart Windows after removing the printer. This helps release files that the print spooler still has open.
3. Add the printer again
Reconnect or power on the printer, then:
- Open Settings.
- Go to Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners on Windows 11, or Devices > Printers & scanners on Windows 10.
- Select Add device.
- Wait for Windows to detect the printer.
- Follow the installation prompts.
- Allow Windows Update to search for the driver if prompted.
When installation completes, select the printer, open its management page, and print a test page. If printing works and the error no longer appears, the driver package was the problem.
If Windows cannot find a suitable driver, download the model-specific package from Epson’s official support portal. Use the printer model, Windows version, and system architecture to select the package. Do not choose a generic DLL download based only on the filename.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of identifying stale or mismatched drivers; its free scan shows what needs attention, while the repair or driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and Epson’s exact model-specific package remains the preferred source for this printer file.
Fix 2: Remove an obsolete printer driver package
Removing the printer does not always remove its driver. A damaged legacy package can remain installed and continue producing ep9res.dll errors.
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners on Windows 11, or Devices > Printers & scanners on Windows 10.
- Scroll to Related settings.
- Select Print server properties.
- Open the Drivers tab.
- Select the obsolete Epson driver.
- Choose Remove.
- Select the option to remove the driver and driver package if Windows offers it.
- Confirm and restart.
Only remove a package you have identified as belonging to the affected or obsolete printer. Removing a shared package can affect other printers.
If Print server properties does not appear in Settings, press Windows key + R, enter:
printui.exe /s /t2
Press Enter and use the Drivers tab. Windows may prevent removal while a printer, queue, or service is using the package. If so, remove the associated printer first and restart the Print Spooler service.
Restart the Print Spooler
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
services.msc. - Press Enter.
- Find Print Spooler.
- Right-click it.
- Select Restart.
Then reinstall the correct printer package and print a test page.
Fix 3: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use this path when the error appears during Windows Update, system repair, startup, or another Windows servicing operation rather than normal printer use. It is also appropriate when Windows reports damaged or missing protected system files.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker.

SFC checks protected Windows system files and replaces damaged copies where possible. SFC is not guaranteed to restore a printer-driver file that is not part of the current protected Windows image, so reinstall the printer package separately when the error is clearly driver-related.
Outbyte PC Repair can help identify system-file problems when you are tired of repeating DISM and SFC without knowing what changed; its free scan shows detected issues, while repair is completed by the full version. It is not required, and DISM followed by SFC remains the built-in repair path.
If DISM reports that source files cannot be found
Restart the computer and install pending Windows updates:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart.
- Run DISM again, followed by
sfc /scannow.
If servicing still fails, record the exact DISM and SFC results. A Windows repair installation or recovery procedure may eventually be necessary, but do not jump to reinstalling Windows before identifying whether the failure is actually caused by an old printer package.

Fix 4: Check Windows Update and legacy compatibility
Windows 10 and Windows 11 do not necessarily include the same legacy printer files as older Windows releases. Historical documentation confirms the Epson nine-pin component in older Windows printer-driver stacks, but it does not prove that every current Windows installation contains ep9res.dll.
For a legacy printer:
- Install all pending Windows updates.
- Restart.
- Remove the existing printer.
- Try adding it again through Printers & scanners.
- If Windows Update does not provide a compatible driver, use Epson’s official model-specific support package.
- Confirm that the package matches the Windows architecture.
- Restart if the installer requests it.
- Print a test page.
Older hardware may not have a current Windows 11 driver. In that case, the manufacturer’s compatibility information and the printer model’s supported operating systems determine whether the device can be used reliably.
Do not force an older 32-bit package onto a 64-bit installation simply because it contains ep9res.dll. Architecture mismatches can cause installation failures, spooler problems, or new driver errors.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software or a cleanup utility may have removed a driver file.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
ep9res.dllor the Epson printer package. - Review the detected file path and publisher.
- Do not restore it merely because the filename is familiar.
Restore a quarantined file only when it is clearly part of the installed printer package and the security product identifies it as trusted. If the path is an unexpected application folder, the publisher is unknown, or the file came from an unofficial download, leave it quarantined and run a full security scan.
The safer recovery is usually to remove the printer and reinstall its signed package from Windows Update or Epson. That replaces the complete package rather than trusting an isolated file.
Fix 6: Remove stale startup or installer references
If you do not have an Epson nine-pin printer, the error may come from an old installer, printer utility, scheduled task, or startup entry.
Check the recent trigger:
- Did the message appear after signing in?
- Did it appear while opening a document?
- Did it appear during an update or printer installation?
- Does it appear only when a particular program starts?
Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc, select Startup apps, and disable only an entry you recognize as obsolete printer software. Do not disable unknown entries simply because they mention a DLL.

Also check Settings > Apps > Installed apps and uninstall an old Epson printer utility if you no longer need it. Restart and observe whether the message returns. If it does, use Event Viewer or Windows Reliability Monitor to identify the executable that requested the file.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you download ep9res.dll manually
No. Do not download an isolated copy from a random DLL website or copy one supplied by another computer.
That approach can provide the wrong Windows release, language, version, or architecture. It can also introduce malware or leave the underlying printer package, INF registration, and spooler configuration broken. Copying the file into C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or an application folder is not a supported repair.

Does regsvr32 fix ep9res.dll
Usually not. regsvr32 is for DLLs that implement the required self-registration entry points. Printer resource files are normally installed as part of a printer-driver package through an INF file and the Windows print subsystem.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Running:
regsvr32 ep9res.dll
may produce an error, or it may appear to succeed without repairing the printer. It does not install the driver package, correct architecture mismatches, repair the Driver Store, or restore printer configuration.
Do not use regsvr32 unless the printer manufacturer or Microsoft documentation specifically instructs you to register that particular file.
What if the error appears during Windows XP servicing
Historical Microsoft file records identify ep9res.dll in Windows XP and document a related issue corrected in Windows XP Service Pack 2. That information applies to the historical operating system and should not be treated as proof that current Windows 10 or Windows 11 installations contain the same file.
If the error occurs on an old XP computer during service-pack installation:
- Back up important files.
- Confirm the service-pack and system architecture.
- Use original Microsoft installation or recovery media where required.
- Avoid replacing the file with an arbitrary download.
- Check whether the printer package or Windows servicing source is incomplete.
For supported current Windows systems, use Windows Update, printer reinstallation, DISM, and SFC instead.
What to collect if the error persists
Before escalating, record:
- The complete error message.
- The program, installer, or Windows operation that displays it.
- The printer model and connection type.
- Windows edition and system type.
- Whether the error occurs before or after printer installation.
- The result of DISM and SFC.
- The path of any quarantined file.
- The name of the driver shown under Print server properties > Drivers.
- Relevant entries from Event Viewer or Reliability Monitor.
To check Reliability Monitor, press Windows key, search for View reliability history, and open it. Look for the failure at the time of the error.
If reinstalling the printer, restarting the spooler, and repairing Windows do not help, consider System Restore or an in-place repair installation. Preserve important files first. A clean Windows installation is an escalation step, not the normal solution for a missing printer resource DLL.
FAQ
Is ep9res.dll a legitimate Windows file?
Yes. It is a legitimate historical Windows printer-driver resource identified as Epson 9 pin driver. Its presence alone does not prove that every copy found on a computer is genuine, so verify the complete driver package and its source.
Is it an Epson file or a Microsoft file?
It belongs to the Epson printer-driver stack, while historical Windows metadata identifies Microsoft Corporation as the publisher. Treat it as a Windows-distributed printer-driver component rather than an Epson application runtime.
Is ep9res.dll required by games or ordinary programs?
Not normally. A program may report the file if it launches an old printer installer or utility, but the file’s known role is the Epson nine-pin printer driver.
Will reinstalling Visual C++ fix the error?
No. ep9res.dll is not identified as a Visual C++ runtime. Reinstall the affected printer package or repair Windows components according to the trigger.
Where should I place the file?
Nowhere manually. Install the complete, correct printer-driver package instead.

Printer drivers have historically used spool-driver directories, and modern Windows uses packaged drivers and the Driver Store. A missing file in System32 does not by itself prove that Windows is damaged.
What is the safest first step?
If an Epson printer or printer installer triggers the message, remove the printer and reinstall its exact driver through Windows Update or Epson’s official support package. If Windows Update or servicing triggers it, run DISM and then SFC after installing pending updates.
