Start with this quick diagnosis
Before replacing anything, note:
- Which program shows the error: every Windows program, a printer-related application, or only one older program.
- When it appears: during Windows startup, when printing, or only when launching the application.
- Your Windows architecture: 64-bit Windows can run both 64-bit and 32-bit applications, which use different system-file locations.
- What changed recently: Windows Update, a printer-driver installation, application installation, disk cleanup, antivirus detection, or malware removal.
The exact message may say:
- “The program can’t start because spoolss.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “This application failed to start because spoolss.dll was not found.”
- “spoolss.dll was not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “Error loading spoolss.dll.”
- “spoolss.dll could not be loaded.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
These messages do not always prove that spoolss.dll itself is absent. A damaged dependency, incompatible 32-bit or 64-bit component, broken application installation, or incorrect loader path can produce similar errors.
The safest approach is to repair Windows first when multiple programs or printing functions are affected. If only one old application fails while printing works normally, repair that application instead.

What is spoolss.dll
spoolss.dll is the Spooler SubSystem DLL, a genuine Microsoft Windows component. Microsoft describes it as the Print Spooler router. It selects the appropriate print provider for a printer request and passes that request to the provider.
Recommended Free Tools
It works with other parts of the Windows printing stack, including spoolsv.exe, winspool.drv, and printer providers. It is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, or .NET file.

Microsoft documents the router and print-provider relationship in its Introduction to Spooler Components and Introduction to Print Providers documentation.
Where spoolss.dll belongs
On 64-bit Windows, the normal architecture-specific locations are:
%windir%System32spoolss.dll
%windir%SysWOW64spoolss.dll
Despite its name, SysWOW64 contains the 32-bit system-file set on 64-bit Windows. System32 contains the native 64-bit files. Microsoft explains this redirection in its File System Redirector documentation.
On 32-bit Windows, the system copy is normally under:
%windir%System32spoolss.dll
Historical file inventories include version 6.0.6001.18000 in both 32-bit and 64-bit forms, with different file sizes. Those records relate to older Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008-era builds. They are not universal versions for Windows 10 or Windows 11, so do not use them to select a replacement file.
Fix 1: Install updates and restart Windows
An incomplete update or pending restart can leave protected Windows components in an inconsistent state. Start here because it is quick and does not alter your applications or printer configuration.
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Open Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install every available update.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not strongly prompt you to do so.
- Try the affected program or print operation again.
If the error remains, continue with the system-file repair commands below. Do not download an individual DLL to work around an update problem.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Use this fix when:
- Several programs report the error.
- Windows printing has stopped working.
- The Print Spooler service will not start.
- The file is missing from a protected Windows folder.
- The issue began after an interrupted update or system change.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker. DISM repairs the Windows component store, which SFC can then use as a source for replacing damaged protected files.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish. It can remain at one percentage for a while.
- Restart Windows when it completes.
Then open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows once more and test the affected program.

How to interpret the result
- “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations” means SFC found no damaged protected files. The issue may be application-specific, driver-related, or caused by a missing dependency.
- “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them” means Windows repaired protected files. Restart and test again.
- “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them” means further servicing is required. Run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once. If it still cannot repair the file, use the escalation steps later in this guide.
When DISM and SFC are repairing a damaged Windows installation, manually hunting for replacement files is slower and can create version mismatches. Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan that shows what it identifies, while repair is handled by the full version; it is optional, and Microsoft’s DISM and SFC remain the appropriate built-in repair path.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Use a matching repair source if DISM cannot repair Windows
If DISM reports that source files could not be found, use a known-good, matching Windows installation source.
In an elevated Command Prompt, the documented format is:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the actual path to a matching Windows repair source. The source must match the installed Windows edition and architecture. Do not point DISM at a random folder or an unrelated Windows installation.
After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Microsoft’s repair guidance for missing or corrupted system files covers this sequence.

This check helps separate a missing file from a loader, dependency, or compatibility problem.
Open Command Prompt and run:
where spoolss.dll
Then check the normal locations:
dir %windir%System32spoolss.dll
dir %windir%SysWOW64spoolss.dll
On 32-bit Windows, the SysWOW64 path may not exist. That is expected.
If the file is present but one program still reports it as missing, do not copy it into the application folder. The program may be 32-bit, may require a dependency, or may contain a damaged private component. Continue with application repair and architecture checks.
If the file is absent from a protected Windows location, use DISM and SFC rather than obtaining a loose copy.

Fix 4: Repair the affected application
If Windows printing works and only one application fails, the application is the more likely problem. This is especially true for older 32-bit desktop software.
Repair a modern Windows application
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Launch the application again.
If Repair does not solve the problem, return to the same screen and select Reset, if available. Reset can remove the application’s local data.

Repair traditional desktop software
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Right-click the affected program.
- Choose Repair or Change.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
If no repair option exists, uninstall the application, restart Windows, and install a compatible copy from its legitimate publisher. Reinstalling the application is the definitive fix when its own files or configuration are damaged.
Do not use Windows Features to add spoolss.dll. It is part of the Windows printing system, not an optional Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET feature that can be safely enabled from that panel.
Fix 5: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows may need the 32-bit system copy under %windir%SysWOW64, while a native 64-bit application uses the 64-bit copy under %windir%System32.
A file existing in System32 does not prove that a 32-bit application has everything it needs. Conversely, copying a 32-bit file over a 64-bit file can cause a different loader error, including 0xc000007b.
Use these steps:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Check System type to identify whether Windows is 64-bit or 32-bit.
- Check the application’s documentation or installer requirements to determine whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Install the application version that matches your Windows environment.
- If the application is old, use its official compatibility guidance or contact its publisher.
Do not swap x86 and x64 copies of spoolss.dll, and do not place a downloaded DLL next to the application executable.
Fix 6: Restart and clear the Print Spooler queue
A corrupt print queue or stuck spooler service can cause printing failures, but clearing the queue does not replace a missing spoolss.dll. Use this fix when the error happens during printing or the spooler repeatedly stops.

- Select Apply, then OK.
- Print a test page.
This process removes pending print jobs. If the service still crashes or Windows reports a missing system file, run DISM and SFC instead of repeatedly clearing the queue.
Fix 7: Remove and reinstall the printer driver
A corrupt or incompatible printer driver commonly causes spooler crashes, stuck queues, or failed printing. It usually does not explain a genuine missing Windows system file, so use this fix when the problem is tied to a particular printer.
Remove the printer
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected printer.
- Choose Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
Remove an obsolete driver
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Print queues or Printers.
- Right-click the obsolete or duplicate printer.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Confirm the action.
- Restart Windows.
Install a current driver through Windows Update or from the printer manufacturer’s official support channel. Avoid driver packages from unrelated download sites.
If several printers or old drivers are installed, remove duplicates first and test with one known-good printer. Microsoft’s Print Spooler service troubleshooting provides additional driver and service guidance.

Manually identifying which of many installed printer drivers is stale can be tedious. Outbyte Driver Updater offers a free scan that identifies driver issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional, and the printer manufacturer’s driver remains the preferred source for a specific device.
Fix 8: Check antivirus quarantine and scan for malware
Security software can quarantine a legitimate Windows file after a false positive, but restoring a file without checking the system can reactivate malware.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries involving
spoolss.dll. - Check whether the detection identifies a threat, a potentially unwanted application, or a suspected false positive.
- Run a full scan before restoring anything.
- Leave the file quarantined if the detection appears credible or the computer may be infected.
- Restore it only after confirming that the file is a legitimate Windows component and the system is clean.
If the file is quarantined again, do not repeatedly restore it. Update Windows Security, run a full scan, and investigate malware or a false positive. Microsoft explains these decisions in its Protection History guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not use regsvr32 for spoolss.dll
regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command. It is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, typically used by certain COM components.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsspoolss.dll is a Windows print-routing component, not a typical self-registering plug-in. Running commands such as these is not the normal repair path:
regsvr32 spoolss.dll
regsvr32 %windir%System32spoolss.dll
They will not repair a missing component store, a broken printer driver, or an incompatible application. Microsoft documents the scope of regsvr32 in its Regsvr32 command reference.
Why downloading spoolss.dll is unsafe
Do not download spoolss.dll from a random DLL website or copy it from another computer. That can:
- Install malware or a tampered file.
- Introduce the wrong Windows version.
- Mix 32-bit and 64-bit architectures.
- Break Windows servicing.
- Overwrite a protected, version-matched component.
- Leave the underlying application or driver problem unresolved.
Microsoft documents the component and its APIs, but does not provide a standalone consumer download intended for replacing this Windows system file. The safe sources are Windows Update, DISM and SFC, a matching Windows repair source, System Restore, or a Windows repair installation.
Fix 9: Use System Restore after a recent system change
If the problem began immediately after a driver, update, or software installation, System Restore can return system files and configuration to an earlier restore point without using a loose DLL.
- Open Start.
- Type
Create a restore point. - Open the matching result.
- Select System Restore.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart and complete the restoration.
System Restore does not replace personal documents, but it can affect recently installed programs, drivers, and updates. Microsoft’s System Restore instructions explain the process and limitations.
If DISM and SFC still cannot repair the file

An in-place repair installation is appropriate when Windows itself is damaged but you want to preserve installed applications and personal files where supported by the installation process. Back up important data first.
A clean reinstall should be the last resort, reserved for severe corruption, persistent malware, or a Windows installation that cannot be repaired. It removes applications and may remove data, so create a verified backup before proceeding.
FAQ
Is spoolss.dll a real Windows file?
Yes. spoolss.dll is the Microsoft Windows Spooler SubSystem DLL, used by the Print Spooler routing system.
Should I copy spoolss.dll from another computer?
No. The other computer may have a different Windows build, architecture, or servicing state. Repair the Windows installation with DISM and SFC instead.
Why does one old program report spoolss.dll while printing works?
The program may be 32-bit, incompatible with the current Windows environment, damaged, or missing a dependency. Repair or reinstall that application before changing Windows files.
Does reinstalling the printer driver fix a missing spoolss.dll error?
Only when the actual cause is a printer-driver or spooler problem. A printer-driver reinstall does not repair a corrupted protected Windows component.
Can I register spoolss.dll with regsvr32?
Normally, no. regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration entry points. It is not the standard repair method for this print-routing component.
What if Windows says “The specified module could not be found”?
That message can refer to a dependency rather than spoolss.dll itself. Check the application installation, architecture, printer drivers, and Windows component health.
What should I do if antivirus quarantined the file?
Run a full security scan and inspect Protection History. Restore the file only after confirming it is legitimate and the system is clean. If it is repeatedly quarantined, leave it isolated while investigating the detection.
