Epic Games and the LEGO Group did announce a partnership on April 7, 2022, but they did not announce a dedicated VR game. Their stated aim was to create family-friendly digital experiences for the metaverse. The first public play experience from the partnership was LEGO Fortnite, which launched inside Fortnite on December 7, 2023 as a screen-based survival-crafting game—not a confirmed headset title.

What Epic and LEGO announced in 2022

The April 7, 2022 announcement described a long-term partnership to build an immersive digital experience for children and families. The companies framed it as part of a safer, more creative metaverse, where children could play together and make things rather than only consume content. Neither company named a product, set a release date, specified gameplay, or identified a VR headset platform. LEGO’s announcement and Epic’s announcement both used broad digital-world language.

The stated safety principles

The companies set out three commitments for the experience they hoped to build:

  • Protect children’s right to play by prioritizing safety and well-being.
  • Safeguard children’s privacy and put their best interests first.
  • Give children and adults controls over the digital experience.

These were design principles, not a certification that every later Fortnite feature would meet a particular safety standard. Epic cited its work with SuperAwesome, while LEGO pointed to its child-safety policies and LEGO Life experience; families still need to review the settings and interactions in the actual game.

Why the partnership was described as VR

Some coverage, including the Tech Times headline that prompted this topic, called the plan “VR experiences.” The companies themselves described a digital experience, an immersive experience, and a virtual 3D world. Those terms do not establish that players need a headset: a 3D world can be played on a conventional screen, and the announcement did not mention tracked controllers, room-scale play, or a VR platform. Contemporary Tech Times coverage also noted that the project’s final form and release date were unknown.

The distinction matters: a metaverse is a broad label for connected social, creative, and interactive digital spaces; VR specifically refers to headset-based immersive computing. The 2022 announcement supports calling this a family-oriented metaverse partnership, not a confirmed VR game. It also does not establish that the companies have no VR plans—only that the cited announcement did not confirm one.

What the partnership produced: LEGO Fortnite

LEGO and Epic identified LEGO Fortnite as the partnership’s first play experience. LEGO announced it on December 2, 2023, and it went live inside Fortnite on December 7, 2023. The experience combines LEGO-styled characters and building with open-world survival crafting. Players explore, gather resources, craft tools, build shelters, recruit villagers, and explore caves or fight enemies, alone or with friends. LEGO’s announcement describes it as the first play experience from the collaboration; Epic’s launch post details its gameplay and availability.

Epic’s cited launch information listed PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, PC through the Epic Games Store, and cloud-gaming services. It did not list Meta Quest, PlayStation VR2, PC VR, or another headset. Ordinary 3D play in Fortnite should not be mistaken for VR support.

How the collaboration expanded inside Fortnite

The partnership grew beyond the initial survival-crafting experience into a broader Fortnite content and creator relationship. Epic later described LEGO assets and tools for Fortnite creators, including use in Fortnite Creative and Unreal Editor for Fortnite, alongside additional LEGO Fortnite experiences and LEGO-themed islands. The named experiences include LEGO Fortnite Odyssey and LEGO Fortnite Brick Life. This makes the collaboration a platform-and-content ecosystem within Fortnite, rather than a single standalone game. Epic’s expansion announcement outlines those additions.

What families should check before playing

“Family-friendly” describes the partnership’s aim; it does not mean every child can use every feature without setup or supervision. Fortnite includes online play and creator-made content, so household decisions about accounts, communication, spending, and who a child plays with still matter.

  • KIT MINIFIGURE – Gaming fans can use the included KIT minifigure to recreate their favorite gaming moments or display it alongside the completed mech
  • GIFT FOR BOYS & GIRLS – This Fortnite toy makes a great birthday or holiday gift for kids and gamers who love Fortnite toys and LEGO building sets
  • Check whether the child is using an appropriate Epic account and review age and parental-control settings.
  • Set voice and text chat, friend requests, and party access to match whether the child plays with known family members or other players.
  • Consider creator-made islands separately from LEGO-branded experiences; user-generated content is not automatically risk-free or made by LEGO or Epic.
  • Use platform-level family controls and restrict in-game spending if needed.
  • Remember that cloud gaming and shared devices can involve platform accounts and expose other account data.

The Epic Games Store lists LEGO Fortnite: Odyssey as free to play, while also showing optional content such as a quest pack. “Free to play” does not mean every item is free, and access can still depend on platform accounts, online services, region, and current offers. Check the Epic Games Store listing for its current details.

Is this connected to LEGO Horizon Adventures?

No connection to the Epic partnership is established in the official materials cited here. LEGO Horizon Adventures is a separate collaboration involving LEGO, Sony Interactive Entertainment, Guerrilla, and Studio Gobo. It is available on PlayStation 5, PC, and Nintendo Switch, and is not presented as an Epic Games/LEGO VR product. See PlayStation’s LEGO Horizon Adventures page for its distinct product information.

What VR-focused players should expect

If you are looking specifically for Meta Quest, PS VR2, PC VR, hand tracking, mixed-reality passthrough, or room-scale LEGO building, the cited official platform information does not confirm any of those features for LEGO Fortnite. The partnership’s publicly documented direction is cross-platform digital play and Fortnite creator content. Do not buy a headset on the assumption that LEGO Fortnite supports it.
