The “coming this July” claim refers to a Microsoft plan announced in May 2024, with July 2024 as its target—not a confirmed July 2026 launch. As of August 18, 2026, Xbox’s current mobile pages describe a companion app, Xbox and PC purchases, cloud gaming and remote play, but not an operating standalone Xbox store for mobile games.
What Microsoft announced in 2024
On May 10, 2024, Microsoft said it planned to launch a web-based Xbox mobile game store in July. The initial offering was expected to feature Microsoft-owned mobile games, with Candy Crush and Minecraft named as examples. The announcement described a browser-based storefront, not a native iPhone or Android app designed to replace the Apple App Store or Google Play. TechCrunch reported the plan and target date.
A web store could give Microsoft another way to sell and promote games directly to mobile players. TechCrunch framed it as an alternative to Apple and Google’s storefronts and their commissions; Microsoft did not establish a final fee policy or guaranteed savings in the reported announcement.
Did the Xbox mobile store launch?
A public launch of a recognizable, standalone Xbox mobile-game marketplace has not been verified in the official Xbox pages reviewed. In April 2026, Windows Central reported that a page associated with the project redirected to a 404 and said the store appeared to be dead. That is reporting about the project’s apparent status, not an official Microsoft cancellation statement. Windows Central’s April 2026 report does not establish a formal cancellation.

Microsoft could revive the idea or use a different name, but the currently described Xbox mobile services are not evidence that the proposed storefront is operating. So the accurate status is: announced for July 2024, not verified as launched, and not confirmed by Microsoft as canceled.
What Xbox mobile offers now
Xbox’s Xbox on Mobile page and Xbox mobile app page describe tools for using the Xbox ecosystem from a phone. The app can be used to browse Game Pass, manage a library and profile, remotely install games to a console, and buy Xbox console and PC games or add-ons where available. The app page says direct purchasing has been reinstated and covers a catalog of thousands of games and additional content.

- Buying Xbox or PC content: Search for a game or add-on in the Xbox app and use its purchase option if available for your region and account. A console or PC purchase does not, by itself, mean the game has a native phone version.
- Cloud gaming: Xbox directs players to xbox.com/play. The official mobile page says a Game Pass subscription is required. Supported regions, devices and cloud-playable titles vary.
- Remote play: Stream games installed on your own configured Xbox console through xbox.com/remoteplay. This streams from the console; it does not install the game on the phone.
- Mobile-native games: The current Xbox pages do not establish a new Xbox-operated store for installing a broad catalog of smartphone games. Use the platform or publisher’s legitimate distribution channel for each native game.
Xbox recommends 5GHz Wi-Fi or mobile data of at least 20 Mbps for mobile cloud gaming. That is a recommendation, not a guarantee of smooth play: latency, congestion, region, device and game all affect performance. The Xbox on Mobile page lists iOS 15.1 or higher and Android 8.0 or higher for the Xbox mobile app, but compatibility requirements can differ between the app and gaming features. Check Xbox’s live support information for your device and location.
Choose the right way to play on a phone
| What you want to do | Use | What you need to know |
|---|---|---|
| Play an Xbox game without owning a console | Cloud gaming at xbox.com/play | Requires the subscription specified by Xbox, a supported region and device, a cloud-playable title, and a suitable connection. |
| Play games you own or have installed on your Xbox console | Remote play at xbox.com/remoteplay | Requires a configured, available console and compatible game. The phone streams the console rather than running the game natively. |
| Install a game that runs natively on a phone | The applicable platform or publisher store | Availability, price, account linking and cross-save vary by title. Do not assume an Xbox console or PC purchase includes a mobile edition. |
| Buy an Xbox or PC game from a phone | Xbox mobile app | Purchases are Xbox ecosystem content, subject to regional and account availability; they are not proof of a standalone mobile-game store. |
Why the proposed store mattered—and what is unknown
Microsoft’s proposal was significant because it could have put its mobile catalog and storefront relationship closer to Xbox players. A browser-based store would also have been a different distribution route from app marketplaces operated by Apple or Google. But the public record cited here does not confirm which countries, games, payment options, parental controls, update mechanisms or developer tools a finished store would have supported.

There are plausible reasons a web store might be harder to use than a native marketplace: users may face more steps to find, install or update a game, and distribution rules differ between iOS and Android. A viable store would also need a compelling catalog and supporting systems for accounts, payments, safety and developer services. These are practical considerations, not confirmed explanations for why Microsoft’s plan did not produce a verified public launch. Microsoft has not supplied a cancellation explanation in the cited material, and it is not established whether the concept could return.

How to read the old “coming this July” claim
- If an article says the store is “coming this July,” check its date: the announcement’s target was July 2024, not July 2026.
- Do not mistake the Xbox mobile app’s purchase features for a store where users can browse and install arbitrary native mobile games.
- A former page returning an error supports the conclusion that the public-facing project is unavailable; it does not prove an official, permanent cancellation.
