It is not automatic proof of corrupted game files, an account problem, a DNS failure, or an Epic-wide outage. Check Epic’s service status first, then isolate the network path before making disruptive launcher changes.
Epic Games Error Code 502 is a generic HTTP “Bad Gateway” error. It means that a gateway, proxy, or other intermediary received an invalid response from an upstream service. The code does not, by itself, prove that Epic Games is down, that your game files are corrupted, that your DNS is failing, or that your account is locked.

The problem can be anywhere along the request path: an Epic service or dependency, a content-delivery or authentication path, your ISP, router, Wi-Fi, DNS resolver, VPN, proxy, firewall, security filter, or the launcher itself. Use the least disruptive checks first, and do not reinstall the Epic Games Launcher until you have ruled out an outage and a network-specific problem.
1. Check Epic’s service status first
Open the Epic Games Public Status page and look at the service relevant to the action that failed. Depending on where the error appears, that may include the Epic Games Store, login services, game services, or Epic Online Services.

If the relevant service is degraded or undergoing maintenance, wait for Epic to resolve the incident and retry periodically. Local troubleshooting cannot repair an upstream outage. Status information is live and time-sensitive, so a previous “operational” report does not establish that services are healthy when you see the error now.
If the status page reports normal operation, continue with the network tests below. A green status page also does not completely rule out a regional routing problem or an issue affecting only one account, ISP, location, or Epic endpoint.
2. Find out whether the error is specific to your network
Retry the same action after making one controlled change at a time. This helps distinguish a local connection problem from an Epic-side or upstream gateway problem.
- Restart the modem and router. Unplug the equipment, wait briefly, reconnect it, and wait until the connection is fully restored before launching Epic again.
- Try another network. If practical, connect the computer temporarily to a phone hotspot. If the request succeeds there, your home network, ISP path, DNS resolver, or router settings become more likely causes.
- Try a wired connection. Connect the computer directly to the router instead of using Wi-Fi. This removes wireless interference and weak-signal issues from the test.
- Disconnect unnecessary devices or heavy network activity. Pause large downloads, streaming, cloud backups, and other traffic while testing.
If you need to rule out unstable Wi-Fi, try the computer on a wired connection with an Ethernet cable before changing launcher files. The cable is a diagnostic accessory and may be unnecessary if you already have one; it cannot repair an Epic-side outage or an upstream gateway failure.
A successful hotspot or wired test does not prove that Epic’s servers are healthy. It only shows that the original network path is contributing to the failure. Conversely, a 502 on multiple independent networks makes a local Wi-Fi issue less likely, especially if Epic’s status page also shows an incident.

3. Check VPN, proxy, firewall, and filtering software
A VPN, corporate or school proxy, parental-control filter, antivirus web shield, or firewall can alter the request path or block a certificate, domain, or connection. If one is active, perform a short controlled test with it disconnected or bypassed, then restore your normal protection immediately afterward.
- Disconnect the VPN and retry.
- Check whether Windows is configured to use a proxy you no longer need.
- If you are on a work, school, hotel, or managed family network, ask the administrator whether Epic traffic is filtered.
- Do not broadly disable antivirus or firewall protection as a permanent “fix.” If security software is suspected, use its documented temporary exception or test procedure.
Epic’s proxy guidance also warns that a self-signed or otherwise untrusted proxy certificate can cause connection problems. Do not install or edit certificates casually. On a managed device, certificate changes should be handled by the organization’s administrator.
4. Verify the clock, Windows updates, and DNS
Incorrect system time can cause HTTPS certificate validation to fail. Make sure the device is set to the correct date, time, and time zone, and enable automatic time synchronization where available. Install pending Windows updates, then restart and test again.
DNS problems can also prevent the launcher from reaching the intended service. Epic’s connection guidance includes trying a public DNS service, but DNS changes are a diagnostic option—not a guaranteed solution for a 502.
On Windows, you can test DNS-related problems by:
- Opening Settings > Network & internet and reviewing the active connection.
- Temporarily configuring a reputable public DNS provider according to that provider’s current instructions.
- Flushing the local DNS cache from an elevated Command Prompt:
ipconfig /flushdnsAfter the command completes, restart the launcher and retry. If changing DNS makes no difference, restore the previous configuration unless you have another reason to keep the new resolver.

Epic also documents checking necessary domains and, in some cases, flushing DNS or resetting the Windows Hosts file. Treat a Hosts-file reset as an advanced step: make a backup first, follow Epic’s current instructions exactly, and do not delete unrelated entries or edit the registry to address this error.

A damaged or stale launcher web cache can cause display and launcher errors. Clearing it is a reasonable repair step, but Epic does not identify cache deletion as a guaranteed, 502-specific fix.
Windows
- Exit Epic Games Launcher.
- Look in the Windows system tray, right-click the Epic Games Launcher icon, and choose Exit if it is still running.
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
%localappdata%and press Enter. - Open
EpicGamesLauncherSaved. - Delete these folders if they exist:
webcache,webcache_4147, andwebcache_4430. - Start the launcher and retry the failed action.
macOS
- Quit Epic Games Launcher completely.
- In Finder, use Go > Go to Folder.
- Enter
~/Library/Caches/com.epicgames.EpicGamesLauncher. - Remove the
webcachefolder if it is present. - Open the launcher and test again.
Deleting these cache folders should not delete installed games, but confirm that the launcher is fully closed before removing anything. If a folder is not present, skip it.
6. Apply launcher-level troubleshooting
If the status page is normal and the network tests do not identify a problem, work through Epic’s general launcher checks:
- Check that the launcher is updated.
- Confirm that the computer meets the launcher’s current system requirements.
- Run the launcher as administrator only when appropriate. This changes permissions; it is not a universal network fix.
- Update graphics drivers if the error appears alongside broader launcher display or startup problems.
- Close unnecessary background applications and overlays.
- Retry after clearing the cache.
Do not jump straight to reinstalling. A 502 describes a failed gateway response, not a damaged installation. Reinstall the launcher only after the less disruptive steps fail and Epic’s troubleshooting guidance points in that direction. Before doing so, make sure you can sign back into your Epic account and note where your installed games are located. A launcher reinstall may require you to reconfigure installation paths or allow games to be detected again.

7. Use the result of each test to choose the next step

- Your country or region.
- Whether the error appears in the Epic Games Launcher, the Epic Games Store in a browser, login, download, update, or a particular game.
- Whether a VPN, proxy, security filter, or managed network is involved.
- Whether a mobile hotspot or wired connection changes the result.
- Your operating system and launcher version, if available.
- A screenshot showing the complete error.
- Relevant launcher logs, if Epic Support requests them.
Do not include passwords, authentication codes, or unnecessary personal information in screenshots or logs. If Epic’s investigation points to your computer, router, ISP, or managed network, contact the relevant manufacturer, provider, or administrator as well.
